Choosing a Mode of Operation
Choosing a Mode of Operation
You can configure the PeerMaster adapter to operate in either of
two modes:
Traditional adapter mode, which is used when you expect little
or no cross-subnetwork traffic. (Subnetwork is also called
subnet.)
Virtual subnetwork (VNET) switch mode, which is used when
you need to configure multisegment subnetworks. The
PeerMaster adapter provides media-rate Ethernet switching
among all LAN segments within a virtual network without
intervention by a server microprocessor.
Choose the mode of operation and configuration that fits the needs
of your network. Both modes of operation are described in this
section, and examples of configurations are provided in
“Configuration Examples” on page 140.
Traditional Adapter Mode
When the PeerMaster adapter is operating in the traditional adapter
mode, each LAN segment of the adapter is separately registered
with the network operating system (NOS). The PeerMaster adapter
appears as four separate, traditional adapters to the NOS; therefore,
each network LAN segment must be configured with a unique
network number.
All cross-segment traffic must be forwarded by a server
microprocessor or by an external device, such as a bridge, router, or
switch.
