Choosing a Mode of Operation
VNET Switch Mode
When the PeerMaster adapter is operating in the VNET switch
mode, multiple LAN segments of the adapter are jointly registered
with the NOS as a single segment. This multisegment subnetwork
is referred to as a virtual subnetwork or a VNET. You can
configure multiple PeerMaster adapters to operate together in
various ways, such as:
One large VNET
Multiple VNETs
Traditional subnetworks
Any combination of VNETs and traditional subnetworks
When configured in the VNET switch mode, the PeerMaster adapter
serves as a high-performance Ethernet switching subsystem within
your server; this subsystem provides media-rate frame forwarding
across all segments within each VNET. This mode is well suited for
creating switched, multisegment, high-bandwidth work groups or
departments. The server microprocessor is shielded from the task of
routing, and no external internetworking devices are required to
support these bandwidth-intensive work groups.
Following are guidelines for using VNET switch mode:
Do not externally join (with bridges, switches, or concentrators)
PeerMaster adapter ports within a VNET.
You may externally attach any number of devices to a VNET.
