Overview

The Illusion Matrix series of Gas Log Fires, including models GFX-L, GFX-M, and GFX-S, are Australian-made appliances designed to provide continuous warmth with the aesthetic appeal of an open fire. These units are intended for installation in suitably constructed wall or fireplace facades and must be installed by an authorized person in accordance with Australian Standard AS/NZS5601.

Function Description:

The Illusion Matrix Gas Log Fires are gas-fueled heating appliances that simulate the appearance of a traditional wood-burning fireplace. They feature highly detailed gas logs, cast from real Australian box timber and hand-painted, which contribute to a realistic flame effect. The appliance incorporates a full ceramic glass front for safety and an enormous viewing area to enhance the visual experience. These units are designed to operate with luminous flames, though slight carbon deposition may occur. They are equipped with a thermostatic fan for efficient heat distribution and can be controlled manually or via an optional radio frequency remote controller.

Usage Features:

  • Lighting Instructions:
    • Pilot Flame Ignition: Depress and turn the control knob to "PILOT," then press the red igniter button while keeping the knob fully depressed for a few seconds. Release slowly and ensure the pilot flame stays lit.
    • Main Burner Ignition: Turn the HI-LO control knob to HI, then depress and turn the control knob to "ON." Gas passage to the main burner opens when the automatic solenoid valve is energized.
    • Pilot Position: To keep the main burner closed and the pilot flame lit, depress and turn the control knob to "PILOT."
    • Turning Off: Depress and turn the control knob to the "OFF" position.
    • A restart interlock device prevents ignition until flame failure has stopped gas flow.
  • Control Identification: Features include a gas off/pilot on/main gas on control, HI-LO flame control, push-button piezo igniter, fan control switch (Boost, Medium, Off), and a remote control receiver.
  • Primary Guard: The appliance is supplied with a primary guard that must be fitted during operation to prevent severe burns from contact with the extremely hot glass front. A secondary fire screen may be appropriate for households with small children or the infirm. The primary guard fits over the door frame without screws.
  • Thermostatically Controlled Fan: The fan automatically turns on 10-15 minutes after the heater reaches a predetermined temperature and shuts off 10-15 minutes after the heater cools down. Fan speed can be set to Low, High, or Boost.
  • Optional Radio Frequency Remote Control: Allows operation within approximately 6m of the appliance. It is a programmable unit that can be wall-mounted and uses 2 'AAA' batteries for the hand unit and 4 'AA' batteries for the receiver. The remote allows switching on/off, activating the thermostat mode, and displaying room temperature. The fan will only start if the fan speed is set to LOW, HIGH, or BOOST.
  • Paint Curing: Initial firing may produce smoke and odor as the heat-resistant paint cures. It is advisable to run the unit on high without the fan for approximately 3-4 hours with windows and doors open during this period.
  • Abnormal Operation: If flames appear excessively large or soot occurs, gas smell is detected, flame pattern is inconsistent, or flue products are smelled, turn off the appliance and contact the supplier or installer immediately. If gas is smelled, turn off the main gas supply and call appropriate authority from outside the building.

Maintenance Features:

  • Annual Service: Must be performed by an authorized person.
  • Cleaning:
    • Clean the burner and control compartment of lint and house dust at least once a year using a soft clean brush and vacuum.
    • Clean the logs with a soft clean brush as they are fragile.
    • When cold, wipe surfaces with a damp cloth; avoid abrasive cleaners.
  • Flame Check: Periodically check that flames are steady, not lifting off burner ports, and logs are free of soot. If issues arise, contact an authorized gas fitter or local dealer.
  • Appliance and Flue System Inspection: Must be inspected by an authorized person before use and at least annually.
  • Clearance: Keep the area near the appliance clear of combustible materials, gasoline, aerosols, and other flammable vapors and liquids.
  • Replacing Logs: The unit should never be used if logs, coals, or rocks are broken. Always turn off the gas valve and allow the unit to cool before handling. Replacement parts must be fitted by an authorized person. Improper positioning of logs can cause soot buildup, carbon monoxide, and affect appliance performance, potentially voiding the warranty.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides solutions for common issues such as pilot flame going out, main burner flame going out while pilot stays on, heater turning off after 30 minutes, sooting on logs, fan rattling, strong odor/smoke on first use, and unit not lighting beyond pilot flame. For persistent issues, contact Illusion Australia directly.

Safety Information:

  • Installation must be by authorized personnel according to regulations, municipal building codes, electrical wiring regulations, and AS/NZS 5601 'GAS INSTALLATIONS'.
  • Do not modify or adjust the appliance.
  • Do not place articles on or against the appliance.
  • Do not store chemicals or flammable materials near the appliance.
  • Do not spray aerosols in the vicinity of the appliance while it is in operation.
