VFF30 LOCKOFF/FILTER
REPAIR KIT INSTRUCTIONS
Important: Any maintenance, service or repair
should be performed by trained and
experienced service technicians. Proper tools
and equipment should be used to prevent
injury to the servicing technician, property or
system components. Service repairs should
always be performed in a safe environment
and the technician should always wear
protective clothing to prevent injury.
The IMPCO PPI-4-116 repair kit instructions
will provide the technician information to
successfully repair the VFF30 Lockoff. Always
inspect the major casting pieces for damage,
corrosion or cracks before attempting a service
repair. Be sure the repair kit part number you
are using is correct for the Lockoff being
serviced. Diaphragms are color coded and
have different performance characteristics:
BLACK: Hydrin diaphragm material is the
standard material and is well suited for the
most common applications.
YELLOW: Silicone diaphragm material is the
optional upgrade material that provides
excellent flexibility in cold weather climates
and is more resistant to chemical
contamination.
BLUE: Fluorosilicone diaphragm material
provides excellent high and low temperature
durability with increased chemical resistance.
This material is recommended for turbo
applications.
Do not use Teflon tape to seal any fuel fittings.
Failure to follow this warning may cause
internal leaks resulting in serious injury and/or
property damage.

Overview

The VFF30 Lockoff/Filter is a device designed for use in fuel systems, likely for internal combustion engines, to control fuel flow and filter out impurities. It is manufactured by IMPCO Technologies Inc. and is designed to be serviceable with specific repair kits.

Function Description:

The VFF30 Lockoff/Filter serves a dual purpose:

  1. Lockoff Function: It acts as a safety device to control the flow of fuel, likely shutting off fuel supply when certain conditions are not met (e.g., engine not running). This is crucial for preventing fuel leaks and ensuring system safety. The internal mechanism involves a valve operating pin, a valve spring, and a valve seat, all working together to regulate fuel passage. A lever is also present, which likely interacts with the valve pin to control its movement.
  2. Filter Function: It incorporates a filter element and a back-up screen to remove particulate matter and contaminants from the fuel, protecting downstream components (such as carburetors or injectors) from damage and ensuring clean fuel delivery.

The device is designed to be robust, with major casting pieces that should be inspected for damage, corrosion, or cracks before any service.

Important Technical Specifications:

While specific numerical technical specifications like flow rates or pressure ratings are not explicitly detailed in the provided pages, several material specifications and assembly torques are mentioned:

  • Screws: Various screw types are used, including 8-32 Taptite, 8-32 x 5/8" LTD FLT, 1/4-20 x 5/8" SEMS, 12-24 Taptite, and 12-24 x 5/8". Specific torque values are provided for tightening:
    • Screws (17) on the "Fuel In" cover: 60-70 in-lbs (6.8-7.9 Nm).
    • Screws (1) on the diaphragm cover side: 28-32 in-lbs (3.2-3.6 Nm).
    • Screw (4) retaining Valve Spring (11): 28-32 in-lbs (3.2-3.6 Nm).
  • Diaphragm Materials: Three types of diaphragms are available, each with distinct performance characteristics:
    • BLACK (Hydrin): Standard material, suitable for most common applications.
    • YELLOW (Silicone): Optional upgrade, offering excellent flexibility in cold weather and increased resistance to chemical contamination.
    • BLUE (Fluorosilicone): Recommended for turbo applications, providing high and low-temperature durability and enhanced chemical resistance.
  • Valve Seat (19): Made of Viton/Aluminum.
  • Seal, Lip Pin (9): Lubricated with petroleum jelly or Vaseline during reassembly.
  • Filter (13) and Screen (12): Essential components for fuel filtration.
  • Gasket (15): Seals the filter cover.

Usage Features:

The VFF30 Lockoff/Filter is an integral part of a fuel system, and its proper functioning is critical for safety and performance.

  • Fuel Compatibility: The device is listed as an "AUTOMOTIVE FUEL LOCK-OFF FILTER FOR LP GAS," indicating its primary application in LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) systems.
  • Installation: Installation should adhere to national and local regulations (e.g., NFPA #37, #52, #58 in the US) to ensure safety and maintain warranty coverage.
  • Safety Warning: A prominent warning advises against using Teflon tape to seal fuel fittings, as this can lead to internal leaks, serious injury, property damage, and void the warranty.

Maintenance Features:

The VFF30 Lockoff/Filter is designed for rebuildability, with specific repair kits available to replace worn or damaged components.

  • Repair Kits: Several repair kits are offered, tailored to different diaphragm types and levels of service:
    • RK-VFF30: Standard Hydrin Diaphragm.
    • RK-VFF30-2: Silicone Diaphragm.
    • RK-VFF30-3: Fluorosilicone Diaphragm.
    • RK-VFF30-958: Fluorosilicone Diaphragm.
    • AF1-10 and AF1-10-001: Gasket and Filter Only.
  • Rebuild Instructions: Detailed step-by-step instructions are provided for disassembly and reassembly, including specific tools and techniques.
  • Cleaning: Covers, body, and metal parts should be cleaned with a safety solvent and dried. Crucially, harsh solvents like brake or carburetor cleaner must not be used on non-metallic components to prevent damage.
  • Component Inspection: Before any service, major casting pieces should be inspected for damage, corrosion, or cracks.
  • Lubrication: The Lip Pin Seal (9) requires lubrication with petroleum jelly or Vaseline during reassembly to facilitate proper seating.
  • Specialized Tools: The repair kit includes specialized tools like the Seal Holder Insertion Tool (H1-14236) and Pin Insertion Tool (P1-14235) to aid in precise and correct reassembly of critical seals and pins.
  • Leak Testing: After reassembly, a crucial step involves pressurizing the "Fuel In" opening with approximately 100 psi of air pressure and using soap bubble solution or a commercial leak detector to check for leaks around the Lockoff outlet, vacuum port ("VAC"), and gasket seals. A successful rebuild requires no air leakage. If leaks are detected, the Lockoff must be replaced.
  • Professional Service: All maintenance, service, or repair should be performed by trained and experienced service technicians using proper tools and equipment in a safe environment, wearing protective clothing. This emphasizes the complexity and safety-critical nature of the device.
