PLACEMENT
Sincetheinstallationofa subwoofercanbesomewhatmorecomplicated
thaninstallingfull-rangespeakers,it isessentialthatyouroadthis sec-
tionvorycarefullypriorto connectingthesubwoofertoyoursystem.

Theperformanceofthesubwooferis directlyrelatedto itsplacementin
the listeningroomandhowyoualignthesubwooferwithitssatellite
speakers.Settingthevolumeofthesubwooferin relationshipto the lee
andright speakersisalsoofcritical importancebecauseit isessential
thatthesubwooferintegratesmoothlywiththeentiresystem.Settingthe
subwoofer'svolumeleveltoo highwillresultin anoverpowering,boom}'
bass.Settingthevolumeleveltoo lowwillnegatethe benefitsof
thesubwoofen
Hereareseveraladditionalfactsoninstallationthat mayproveuseful.
It isgenerallybelievedbymostaudioauthoritiesthat lowfrequencies
(below125Hz)arenondirectionaland,therefore,placementofa sub-
wooferwithinanylisteningroomisnotcritical.Whileintheoryit istrue
thatthe largerwavelengthsof extremelylowfrequenciesare basically
nondirectional,thefact isthat,wheninstallingasubwooferwithinthe lim-
itedconfinesof a room,reflections,standingwavesandabsorptionsgen-
eratedwithintheroomwillstronglyinfluencethe performanceofanysub-
woofersystem.Asa result,specificlocationof thesubwooferbecomes
important,andwestronglyrecommendthatyouexperimentwithplacement
beforechoosinga final location.
Placementwilldependuponyourroomandtheamountandqualityof bass
required(for example,whetheror notyourroompermitsplacementofthe
subwooferneareithersatellite).Besureto leavea minimumof sixinches
betweenthewallandtheportonthe subwoofen
