Care must be taken not to nick or scratch the
test sample with the hardened steel knife
edges. Nicks and scratches, particularly on
softer samples can be caused by a clamping
spring or rubber band that is too tight and will
result in the growth of fatigue cracks in the
specimen that will render acquired test data
meaningless.
