Overview

The iOptron HAZ Strain Wave Gear Alt-Az GoTo Mount is a versatile and robust astronomical mount designed for both visual observation and astrophotography. Available in models HAZ31, HAZ46, and HAZ71, it features a strain wave gear system for precise and smooth tracking. The mount is designed for unbalanced operation, meaning it can be used with various telescope setups without requiring counterweights, though proper securing to a tripod is crucial to prevent tipping.

Function Description:

The HAZ mount is an Alt-Az (Altitude-Azimuth) GoTo mount, which means it automatically locates and tracks celestial objects. Its primary function is to provide a stable and accurate platform for telescopes, allowing users to observe planets, stars, and deep-sky objects with ease. The integrated Go2Nova® 8409 Hand Controller, equipped with built-in WiFi, facilitates intuitive control and navigation. The mount can be controlled via the hand controller, a computer, or a smartphone/tablet, offering flexibility in operation. It supports ASCOM for Windows, INDI driver for MacOS/Linux, iOptron Commander Lite, and SkySafari Pro for iOS/Android, ensuring broad compatibility with astronomical software.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Mount Models: HAZ31, HAZ46, HAZ71, indicating different load capacities or sizes.
  • Gear System: Strain Wave Gear, known for its high precision, zero backlash, and compact design.
  • Hand Controller: Go2Nova® 8409 with built-in WiFi.
  • Power Supply: 12V 5A DC output (100-240V AC adapter included for indoor use). HAZ46 and HAZ71 models also feature an internal rechargeable battery for portable use. A 12.6V battery charger is included.
  • Connectivity: 6P6C hand controller cable, USB 2.0 cable, HBX port for hand controller, DC12V IN socket for power.
  • Dovetail Saddle: Vixen/Losmandy dual saddle, convertible for binocular mounting.
  • Tripod Compatibility: Attaches to tripods or piers with a 3/8"-16 threaded post.
  • GPS: Integrated GPS for automatic date, time, and location acquisition.
  • Bubble Level Indicator: Built-in for easy leveling of the mount.

Usage Features:

  • Easy Setup: The mount head is easily attached to a tripod or pier using a center bolt and tray lock knob. The tripod legs can be extended and adjusted for height and level, with a built-in bubble level for convenience.
  • Dovetail Saddle Conversion: The dual dovetail saddle can be converted for binocular mounting by unscrewing four socket screws, reattaching the saddle to the top of the adapting plate, and tightening the screws. This allows for both side-mounted telescope and up-mounted binocular configurations.
  • Telescope Attachment: Telescopes or binoculars slide into the dovetail saddle and are secured with a locking screw. An arrow mark on the saddle indicates the correct objective end direction. A safety stopper screw can be threaded into the dovetail bar to prevent accidental sliding.
  • GoTo Functionality: After powering on, the mount can perform an Assist Alignment Wizard to find its Zero position (Zenith and magnetic south). If GPS signal is acquired, it proceeds to alignment automatically. If not, users can manually enter date, time, UTC offset, DST, and GPS location. The mount then slews to a bright star for calibration, which users center using arrow keys.
  • Object Selection and Tracking: Users can select objects from categories like "Solar System" via the MENU => "Select and Slew" function. The mount will automatically slew to and track the selected object.
  • Sync to Target: To improve GOTO accuracy, the "Sync to Target" function allows users to center an object in the eyepiece and synchronize the mount's position.
  • Hand Controller Settings: Date, time, UTC offset, DST, and site coordinates (longitude and latitude) can be set via MENU => "Settings" => "Set Time & Site". GPS information can also be imported from a smartphone using iOptron Commander Lite (WiFi version ASCOM).
  • Computer/Smartphone Control: The mount can be controlled remotely via USB or built-in Wi-Fi, offering advanced control options through various software platforms.
  • Safety Features: A warning is provided against looking at the sun without a solar filter during daytime operation. The importance of securing the tripod to prevent tipping is emphasized.

Maintenance Features:

  • Battery Installation (Hand Controller): The hand controller requires a CR2032 button battery (not pre-installed due to shipping restrictions). Users need to open the back cover, slide the battery with the "+" sign up under metal hooks, and push it down for contact.
  • Internal Battery (HAZ46/HAZ71): These models have an internal rechargeable battery that should be fully charged before use. Online instructions are available for battery installation and replacement.
  • Carrying Case: A carrying case is included for safe transport and storage. It is recommended to return the mount to its Zero Position before packing it into the case.
  • Firmware Upgrades: Users are advised to check online for the latest firmware versions to ensure optimal performance.
  • Technical Support: iOptron provides technical support via email (support@ioptron.com).
  • Warranty: A two-year warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship. Customers must obtain a Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) number before returning products for repair or replacement. The warranty is valid for products purchased from authorized dealers in the U.S.A. and Canada, or directly from iOptron. International customers should contact their local distributors.
