The Platinum® Series Vacuum Pumps are 2-stage, direct drive pumps designed for deep vacuum work in refrigeration and air conditioning systems. Each pump is factory tested to guarantee 15 micron* or better performance and listed CFM. The serial number is recorded for warranty purposes, and product registration can be done online at www.jbind.com. It's important to note that these pumps are not to be used on Ammonia or Lithium Bromide (salt water) systems.
Function Description
The Platinum® vacuum pump's primary function is to create a deep vacuum in refrigeration and air conditioning systems. It features a 2-stage, direct drive mechanism for efficient operation. An isolation (blank-off) valve is integrated, allowing for quarter-turn on/off operation to isolate the system without needing an additional valve. This valve can be slowly turned counter-clockwise to a pause position at 45° and is completely closed at 90°. The pump also includes a gas ballast valve, which can be cracked during the initial part of the evacuation procedure to help remove moisture, and then closed for deeper vacuum.

Dual Voltage Models (-250 series):
These models feature a 1/2 HP motor (1725/1425 RPM) and support 115V, 60Hz, and 230v, 50Hz. Specific models include DV-42N-250, DV-85N-250, DV-142N-250, DV-200N-250, and DV-285N-250, with intake port sizes and oil capacities matching their US domestic counterparts.
General Specifications:
- Operating Temperature: Vacuum pump and oil must be above 30°F. Normal operating temperature is approximately 160°F.
- Motor: 1/2 HP, 1725 RPM (for US domestic models), 1725/1425 RPM (for dual voltage models). Features automatic resetting thermal overload protection and is designed for continuous duty.
- Line Voltage: Must be equal to motor nameplate ±10%.
Usage Features
Start-up Procedure:
- Open one intake port and the isolation valve.
- Close the gas ballast valve.
- Start the pump.
- Make vacuum connections.
- Crack the gas ballast valve for the initial part of the evacuation.
- Once the pump quiets down, close the gas ballast valve and continue evacuating.
Shut-down Procedure:
- Close the isolation valve.
- Open the gas ballast valve all the way.
- Continue running the pump for 2-3 seconds.
- With the gas ballast valve still open, stop the pump.
- Close the gas ballast valve.
- Remove hose connections and cap intakes.
Wireless Micron Gauge (DV-40S):
The DV-40S is a separate accessory that enhances the pump's usability by providing accurate vacuum measurements.
- Measurement Range: 12,000 microns down to 10 microns.
- Durability: Heavy-duty water resistant.
- Display: Includes a backup display on the gauge.
- Alarms: Programmable with low & high limit alarms.
- Connectivity: Smart phone control through the free JB App, remote management capability, and Wireless Bluetooth®.
- Data Logging: Capabilities for sharing job analytics.
- Power: Rechargeable battery.
- Calibration: Factory calibrated.
- Units: Measures in microns, psia, inhg, Pascals, torr, mtorr, and mbar.
- Charging: USB charging adapter for wall or computer charging.
- Visibility: Light or dark app theme for different environments.
Maintenance Features
Oil Management:
- Oil Type: Use oil specifically refined for deep vacuum pumps. Using unrefined or contaminated oil will void the warranty.
- Oil Level: Slowly add oil until the level rises to the top of the OIL LEVEL line in the sight glass. The oil level must be above halfway in the sight glass.
- Oil Change Frequency: Pump oil should be changed after each use, especially if the system is heavily contaminated, requiring multiple changes during evacuation.
- Oil Condition: After evacuation, oil contains rust-forming water and corrosive acids, so it should be drained immediately while the pump is warm.
- Oil Fill Plug: Do not wrench down or use sealant on threads.
- Oil Drain Valve: Close drain finger tight.
Changing Oil Procedure:
- Place the DV-T1 TANK oil caddy on a level surface.
- Unscrew the black plug counterclockwise in the drain base to open.
- Place the vacuum pump in the cradle and drain the pump.
- Once drained, turn the black cap clockwise to close.
- Close the drain on the pump.
- Remove the oil fill cap and fill to the top of the OIL LEVEL line with BLACK GOLD Pump Oil.
- Replace the oil fill cap.
Flushing Procedure:
- Requirement: Necessary if the oil is badly contaminated.
- Steps:
- Always drain the pump before flushing.
- Slowly pour 1/3-1/2 cup of BLACK GOLD Pump Oil into the intake connection while the pump is running.
- Repeat as required until contamination is removed from the oil reservoir, pump rotors, vanes, and housing.
- Dispose of all oil used in flushing.
Important Note: The unit is drained of oil for shipment. Do not attempt to operate without adding oil.
Troubleshooting:
The manual provides a troubleshooting guide for common issues:
- Pump won't start: Check power cord, motor switch, pump temperature (must be >30°F), and line voltage.
- Pump won't pull deep vacuum: Check for contaminated oil, low oil level, air leaks, missing/loose inlet fittings, or a slipping coupler.
- Oil drips from shaft: Replace the shaft seal.
- Pump shuts down and won't start: Thermal overload may be open; disconnect, wait 15 minutes, and restart. If it cycles off again, return for repair.
- Pump cycles on/off from cold start then runs smoothly: This indicates oil backed up into the cartridge, which is being cleared. Remove the 1/4" cap and turn the pump on.
Warranty:
Platinum® pumps are warranted against defects in materials and workmanship for 2 years. Not changing oil will void the warranty. Repairs for out-of-warranty items are invoiced nominally. The full warranty details are available at www.jbind.com.
