The JBL PS Series Powered Subwoofers are designed to enhance your audio experience by providing deep, accurate, and balanced bass reproduction. These subwoofers are available in three models: PS60/230, PS100/230, and PS120/230, each offering varying levels of power and performance to suit different needs.
Function Description:
The PS Series subwoofers are amplified units, meaning they have a built-in amplifier to power the subwoofer driver. This design allows for versatile connectivity options, including both line-level and speaker-level stereo inputs, making them compatible with a wide range of audio systems, from receivers and TVs to dedicated source amplifiers. They also feature speaker outputs, enabling you to connect satellite speakers directly through the subwoofer, simplifying your speaker setup.
A key feature is the adjustable level and crossover points. The "Level" control allows you to fine-tune the amount of bass output to seamlessly integrate with your main speakers. The "Crossover Frequency" knob determines the highest frequency the subwoofer will reproduce, ensuring a smooth transition between the subwoofer and your satellite or main speakers. This is particularly useful for optimizing the sound when using small satellite speakers that may lack low-frequency response.
The subwoofers incorporate High Quality Active Equalization Amplifier Circuitry. This technology integrates the acoustic and electronic systems within a single enclosure, allowing JBL engineers to employ an equalizer circuit that extends the bass response beyond the typical limitations of a compact enclosure. This results in a more impactful and detailed low-frequency sound.
For protection and convenience, the PS Series includes ALC (Automatic Level Control) Protection Circuitry. This system automatically engages when high input signal levels are detected, preventing damage to the subwoofer driver from accidental misuse and ensuring long-term performance. The unit also features a multicolor LED indicator on the front panel that communicates its operational status (Red for stand-by, Green for active, Amber for protection mode), and an auto shut-off mode that conserves power after approximately 3 minutes of no signal.

Usage Features:
- Voltage Selection: A switch on the rear panel allows you to select the appropriate AC voltage (240V or 230V) for your region.
- Connectivity:
- Line Input: Use RCA (phono) jacks for connecting to line-level outputs from pre-amps, crossovers, signal processors, or receiver/TV/source amplifier line-level outputs. Supports single RCA output (using R or L input) or stereo (R & L) inputs (potentially with a "y" adapter).
- Speaker Level Input: Connects to the speaker outputs (speaker mains) of your receiver/TV/source amplifier using speaker wires.
- Speaker Level Output: Allows you to connect external satellite speakers, passing the unaltered signal source to them while the subwoofer handles the low bass.
- Polarity Switch: This switch helps maintain proper acoustic summation with your main speakers. You can toggle between "Normal" and "Reverse" to find the setting that sounds best in your listening environment. This should be re-evaluated if the subwoofer is moved.
- Placement Flexibility: Due to the non-directional nature of low frequencies, the subwoofer can be placed almost anywhere in the room, such as under an end table, next to a wall, or near a TV. Magnetic shielding prevents interference with video displays.
- Power Management: The unit has a power switch on the rear. For initial setup, the "Level" control should be set to "Min" before turning the power switch ON. The LED indicator provides visual feedback on the subwoofer's status, and the auto shut-off feature helps save energy. For extended periods of non-use, it's recommended to turn off the power switch.
Maintenance Features:
- Cleaning: The cabinet can be cleaned with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid using detergents, other cleaners, benzene, thinner, alcohol, volatile agents, or insecticide sprays.
- Service: The PS Series subwoofers should only be serviced by an authorized JBL repair station. Do not attempt to open the cabinet, remove the grille, or remove the amplifier, as there are no user-serviceable parts inside, and doing so may void your warranty. The grille is fixed and should only be removed by qualified personnel. Woofers are replaceable by a repair station only.
- Troubleshooting: Before seeking service, re-check all connections as outlined in the manual and verify that your AC wall power source is working correctly with another appliance.
