Overview

The VRX900 series encompasses a range of professional loudspeakers designed for various sound reinforcement applications, including line arrays, subwoofers, and stage monitors. These systems are engineered for high performance, versatility, and ease of deployment in both fixed installations and touring environments.

Function Description

The VRX900 series offers a comprehensive solution for sound professionals, providing systems capable of delivering clear, powerful audio across diverse venues. The core of the series includes two-way line array loudspeakers, bass-reflex subwoofers, and two-way stage monitors, each tailored for specific roles within a sound system.

The line array loudspeakers, such as the VRX932LA-1 and VRX928LA, are designed for use in arrays of multiple enclosures. Their Constant Curvature waveguide ensures a seamless vertical coverage pattern when multiple units are arrayed, making the entire array behave acoustically like a single, larger loudspeaker. This design is particularly beneficial for distributing sound evenly across an audience area, from the nearest listeners to the most distant. A key feature, the Array Configuration Selector (ACS), allows for amplitude shading in passive mode. This technique adjusts the relative acoustic output of different sections of the array, typically reducing high-frequency output for speakers covering closer areas and increasing it for those covering farther areas. This helps to achieve a more uniform sound-power distribution throughout the listening space without altering the overall sound power. In bi-amplified systems, array shading is achieved by connecting separate amplifier channels to the high-frequency sections of each loudspeaker, allowing for precise gain adjustments to control coverage.

The subwoofers, including the VRX918S and VRX915S, are direct-radiating bass-reflex designs intended to augment the low-frequency response of the line array systems. They can be used in suspended arrays, ground-supported configurations, or with pole-mounted line array speakers. The VRX918S, a single 18" subwoofer, is fully compatible with the VRX932LA-1 line array system and the VRX-AF array frame for suspension. The VRX915S, a compact 15" subwoofer, is designed as a companion for the VRX928LA line array and the VRX-SMAF array frame, also supporting pole mounting with the SS4-BK adjustable pole mount. When deployed in arrays, subwoofers are always positioned at the top of the array to maintain structural integrity and optimize acoustic performance.

The VRX915M is a dedicated two-way touring-class floor monitor. Its compact and lightweight design, coupled with a low stage height, makes it ideal for on-stage monitoring. It features a patented Differential Drive® woofer for accurate low-frequency reproduction and a compression driver coupled to an aluminum horn for smooth and clear high-frequency output, crucial for high-performance monitoring. The monitor offers both bi-amp and full-range passive operation, selectable via a recessed switch, and includes additional NL4 connectors for convenient loop-thru connections on stage, minimizing cable runs.

Usage Features

The VRX900 series emphasizes flexible deployment options. The line array loudspeakers can be ground-supported or suspended. For ground-supported applications, single VRX932LA-1 or VRX928LA units can be mounted on tripod stands (JBL SS2-BK) or on poles (JBL SS4-BK) over companion subwoofers like the VRX918S, VRX915S, or SRX718S. The dual-angle pole mount socket allows for optimal coverage, with the rear socket positioning the speaker baffle at 2.5° to the floor and the forward socket angling it down by 15°. This ensures that listeners are within the speaker's coverage angle. When using two VRX932LA-1/VRX928LA speakers on a pole or tripod, integral rigging hardware and quick release pins must be used to secure them together, with the lower speaker typically set to "Short Throw (-3 dB)" and the upper to "Short Throw (-3 dB)" or "Mid Throw (0 dB)" for optimal coverage. It is crucial not to stack more than two VRX932LA-1/VRX928LA speakers on a pole.

For suspended applications, the VRX-AF, VRX932LA-AF, and VRX-SMAF array frames are used. These frames are precisely engineered to work with the VRX speakers as a system, with working load limits depending on the specific configuration of the array frame and speakers. The array frames attach to the internal rigging of the VRX900 system using provided Quick Release Pins. Subwoofers are always placed at the top of a suspended array. For permanent installations, VRX arrays can be suspended using M10 eyebolts, with a kit of three forged shoulder eyebolts available from JBL Professional. Both top attachment points must be used for suspension.

Ground-stacked, upward-firing arrays are also possible, particularly for covering stadium bleachers from the playing field. In this configuration, the VRX932LA-AF/VRX-AF/VRX-SMAF array frame is attached to the bottom of the array, serving as a base. Up to four VRX932LA-1/VRX928LA loudspeakers can be ground-stacked and locked together, ensuring the surface is flat, stable, and solid.

The VRX915M stage monitor's symmetrical 30° wedge design, along with non-slip rubber feet, allows for convenient left and right applications of adjacent monitors. The transducers are protected by a CNC-machined steel grille, internally lined with acoustically transparent foam.

Maintenance Features

The VRX900 series emphasizes safety and durability through its design and recommended maintenance practices. The enclosures are constructed from multi-ply birch plywood, and finished with JBL's rugged DuraFlex™ finish, providing protection against wear and tear in demanding environments. Grilles are powder-coated steel with acoustically transparent foam backing, protecting the transducers.

For all rigging hardware, including enclosures, frames, pins, and eyebolts, regular inspection is critical. Before each use, especially when suspending or pole mounting, all components must be checked for cracks, deformations, corrosion, missing, loose, or damaged parts that could compromise the strength and safety of the array. Any equipment with such issues should not be used until proper corrective action is taken. Installed systems should undergo a visual survey at least annually, checking for signs of cracking, water damage, de-lamination, or any other condition that might reduce the loudspeaker enclosure's strength. Accessory rigging hardware provided by JBL should be inspected for fatigue at least annually or as required by local ordinances. For other hardware and fittings, users should refer to the manufacturer's inspection and maintenance guidelines.

The VRX900 series products are not intended for fixed outdoor installations or high-moisture environments. Exposure to moisture can damage speaker cones and surrounds, and cause corrosion of electrical contacts and metal parts. Extended or intense direct sunlight should also be avoided, as it can prematurely dry out driver suspensions and degrade finished surfaces due to UV light. When placed on slippery surfaces, precautions should be taken to prevent movement due to acoustical energy output.

For bi-amp mode operation, specific DSP presets are required, and users are advised to visit the JBL Professional website for the latest recommended system tunings. For any service needs, customers are directed to contact JBL Professional customer service for guidance on authorized service agencies or factory repair, ensuring that original bills of sale are available to establish the purchase date for warranty claims.
