Overview

The KAIWEETS KC601 is a True-RMS Smart Clamp Meter designed for a wide range of electrical measurements, featuring an auto-ranging capability and inrush current capture. This digital clamp meter is capable of measuring AC/DC current up to 600A, AC/DC voltage up to 600V, resistance, continuity, diode, capacitance, frequency, duty cycle, and temperature. It also includes non-contact AC voltage detection (NCV) and live detection functions.

Function Description

The KC601 offers comprehensive measurement capabilities:

  • AC/DC Current Measurement: The device can measure both alternating and direct currents up to 600A. For AC current, it includes an "Inrush" function to capture the instantaneous high input current drawn by a power supply or electrical equipment at turn-on, which is crucial for diagnosing motor startup issues or other transient loads. The measuring time for inrush current is approximately 100ms, and the range is 5-600A. When measuring current, the conductor is clamped within the jaws of the meter. For AC current, the frequency is also displayed.
  • AC/DC Voltage Measurement: It measures AC and DC voltages up to 600V. When measuring AC voltage, the frequency is displayed. It's important to note that voltages above 600V (AC) / 600V (DC) cannot be measured to avoid electric shock or injury.
  • Resistance Measurement: The meter can measure resistance, with an overload protection of 250V. When measuring resistance on a circuit, the measured value might be influenced by other circuits.
  • Continuity Test: This function checks for continuity in a circuit. If the resistance is less than 50Ω, the buzzer sounds and the alarm indicator light turns on. The test voltage is approximately 1V, and overload protection is 250V.
  • Diode Test: The diode test function allows for checking diodes in a circuit. If the probe polarity is opposite to the diode polarity, the meter displays "OL," indicating that the anode and cathode can be distinguished. A warning is issued to ensure the power to the circuit is turned off and all capacitors are discharged before testing to avoid electrical shock. Overload protection is 250V.
  • Capacitance Measurement: The device measures capacitance, with an overload protection of 250V. It may take time for the measurement to stabilize when measuring large capacitance.
  • Frequency or Duty Cycle Measurements (Hz%): The meter can measure frequency and duty cycle. For "mV" gear voltage measurement, the range is 10Hz ~ 2 kHz with a sensitivity of >50mV(RMS), sine wave. For "V" gear voltage measurement, the range is 10Hz ~ 2 kHz with a sensitivity of >0.5V(RMS), sine wave. The current measurement frequency range is 10Hz ~ 2 kHz with a sensitivity of >12A(RMS), sine wave. For "Hz/%" gear, the frequency range is 5Hz ~ 10MHz, and the voltage range is >2.5V RMS (the higher the frequency, the higher the voltage).
  • Temperature Measurement: Using a K-type thermocouple, the meter can measure temperature. It takes time for the thermocouple to restore to the instrument's thermal balance with the environment. A warning advises against touching charged objects with the thermocouple probe to avoid damage or personal injury.
  • Non-contact AC Voltage Detection (NCV): This feature allows for detecting AC voltage without direct contact. The detection sensitivity can be affected if the NCV function is used without removing the probe. A weak electric field signal displays "--L" and emits a slow beep sound with a green LED, while a strong electric field signal displays "--H" and emits a fast beep sound with a red LED.
  • Live Detection: This function helps identify live wires. The detection sensitivity can be affected if the black test lead is not removed. A low voltage detected displays "---L" with a slow beeping tone and green LED lights up. A high voltage detected displays "---H" with a fast beeping sound and red LED lights up. Under normal circumstances, the detected line is "LIVE" at this time.

Usage Features

  • Auto-ranging: The meter automatically identifies and measures AC/DC voltage, AC/DC current, resistance, and continuity. Current is measured by the clamp, and other measurements require the test leads.
  • Automatic Shutdown: If there is no operation within 15 minutes after starting up, the meter automatically shuts down to save battery energy. This feature can be canceled by pressing and holding the "AUTO FUNC" button while turning on the instrument; the "circle with a line through it" symbol will disappear, indicating the automatic switch-off function is canceled.
  • Calibration: The meter performs a self-test when switched on and displays "CAL." A buzzer sound indicates the completion of the self-test.
  • Data Hold: Pressing the "H" button captures and holds a stable measurement. It's crucial to ensure this function is deactivated at the start of a test to avoid incorrect measurement results.
  • Flashlight: The device includes a flashlight, which can be turned on or off by pressing and holding the "H" button for more than 2 seconds.
  • Function Buttons:
    • AUTO FUNC: Short press to choose various functions; long press to put the machine into automatic measurement mode.
    • MAX MIN: Press to switch between maximum and minimum values; press for more than 2 seconds to exit this mode. Before entering "MAX/MIN" mode, press "AUTO FUNC" to switch to the most suitable function.
    • SEL INRUSH: ZERO/Function selection/Inrush current measurement button. Select specific functions or open Inrush function when testing AC current.
  • Safety Information: The manual emphasizes several safety precautions, including reading the manual carefully, avoiding using the instrument alone, never measuring AC current while test leads are in input jacks, not using the meter in wet or dirty environments, inspecting test leads for damage, using caution with voltages above 30V ac RMS, 42V ac peak, or 60V dc, and not attempting to measure voltages exceeding the maximum range of 600V RMS. It also warns against operating the meter around explosive gas, vapor, or dust, and advises keeping fingers behind finger guards when using probes.

Maintenance Features

  • Battery Replacement: The meter uses 3 AAA (1.5V) batteries. When the low battery symbol appears, the batteries should be replaced. This involves disconnecting the meter from the power source, removing test leads, loosening screws on the back, and replacing old batteries.
  • General Maintenance: To avoid electrical shock, disconnect test leads before removing the back cover. Repairs or servicing not covered in the manual should only be performed by qualified personnel.
  • Contamination and Static Damage: Avoid touching the circuit board without proper static protection.
  • Storage: If the meter is not used for a long time, remove the battery. Do not store the meter in a high temperature or high humidity environment.
  • Cleaning: To avoid damaging the meter, do not use abrasives or solvents. Periodically clean the meter with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Do not get water inside the case. Wipe the contacts in the socket with a clean cotton swab soaked in alcohol.
