Overview

The Key Digital KD-DA1x4DC is a 4K 18G HDMI Distribution Amplifier designed to efficiently distribute a single HDMI video source to up to four HDMI displays. This device is particularly versatile due to its integrated 4K to 1080p resolution down-conversion capability, which allows for seamless display on a mix of 4K and 1080p screens without compromising content quality. Engineered for professional audio-video installations, the KD-DA1x4DC is suitable for various applications, including digital signage, surveillance monitoring, and other scenarios requiring reliable video distribution.

A key function of the KD-DA1x4DC is its ability to handle high-bandwidth 4K/UHD signals, supporting resolutions up to 4096x2160 or 3840x2160 at 24/25/30/60Hz with 4:4:4 chroma sub-sampling, and up to 18Gbps bandwidth. It is fully licensed and compatible with HDCP 2.2, ensuring secure content transmission. The device also supports HDR10 and Dolby Vision®, delivering enhanced luminance levels for more lifelike images. Beyond 4K, it supports a wide range of SD, HD, and VESA resolutions, including VGA, SVGA, XGA, WXGA, SXGA, and UXGA, up to 4096x2160p.

One of the standout usage features is the 4K to 1080p Down Convert function. When enabled, this resolution conversion is applied individually to outputs based on the EDID information received from each connected display. This means that if a display only supports 1080p, the KD-DA1x4DC will automatically down-convert the 4K content to 1080p for that specific output, while simultaneously sending 4K content to other displays that support it. This intelligent conversion ensures optimal viewing on all connected screens without manual intervention for each display. The device also supports deep color, up to UHD/4K 30Hz 4:4:4/12 bits or 60Hz 4:4:4/8 bit.

For audio integration, the KD-DA1x4DC offers robust audio de-embedding capabilities. Audio from the connected HDMI input is simultaneously output through both digital Optical and analog 3.5mm stereo connectors. This allows for easy integration with external audio systems such as amplifiers, distributed audio setups, or sound bars. The device supports a variety of digital audio formats, including DTS-HD Master Audio™, DTS:X®, Dolby® TrueHD, and Dolby Atmos®, ensuring high-fidelity audio reproduction. The analog L/R audio output is a 3.5mm stereo jack that automatically mutes if the audio format is not PCM 2ch. The optical audio output, in SPDIF IEC 60958 format, supports multi-channel Dolby® and DTS™ surround formats up to 5.1 and also mutes automatically if the audio format is not PCM, Dolby®, or DTS™. Each audio output drives signals up to 2VRMS with a sampling rate of 192KHz, and there are no volume, tone control, or DSP features.

The KD-DA1x4DC incorporates Key Digital's Full Buffer System™, which manages TMDS re-clocking and signal re-generation, HDCP authentication between the source and display, and EDID control handshaking. This system is crucial for maintaining signal integrity and resolving common HDMI integration issues. The EDID Management feature includes an internal library with 15 pre-set EDID handshakes, including 4K with HDR options, in addition to the ability to copy native EDID data from output/display 1. This flexibility in EDID management helps to ensure compatibility and optimal performance with a wide range of sources and displays. The EDID rotary switch allows users to select from various EDID settings, including different resolutions and audio formats, to best suit their system's needs. For Dolby Vision® content, it is important to connect the supported display/device to Output 1 and set the EDID rotary to 0, as Dolby Vision® signals may not be down-converted, and incorrect settings could result in a black or no image.

Another practical feature is the CEC Disconnect, which prevents unwanted control commands from displays reaching the source, offering greater control over the system's behavior. The device also includes a Forced HPD (Hot Plug Detection) troubleshooting tool. When set to ON, the Hot Plug Detection voltage is fixed on the connected display, which can help resolve certain display detection issues. The standard HPD behavior is maintained when the switch is in the OFF position.

For ease of installation and maintenance, the KD-DA1x4DC features clear LED indicators on the front panel. A blue LED illuminates solid to indicate an active incoming HDMI signal, and blinks steadily if no active signal is present. Similarly, blue LEDs for each output illuminate solid when Hot Plug Detection (HPD) is received from the connected display/output device and an active incoming HDMI signal is present from the video source. The rear panel includes the HDMI input on the left side and four HDMI outputs on the center-right. The analog L/R and optical audio outputs are also located on the rear panel.

Mounting options include the supplied L-Brackets for various installations. Multiple KD-DA1x4DC units can also be mounted in a KD-SMS16 mounting shelf using side mounting screws, with specific spacing options available. It is important not to exceed 12 units in the KD-SMS16 to prevent overheating and potential unit damage. The device is powered by a KD-PS5V1ASC 5V/1A DC power supply, which is a screw-in type to ensure a secure connection. Users are explicitly warned to use only the provided power supply to avoid voiding the warranty and risking damage to the unit and associated equipment.

The setup process is straightforward: begin with all devices off and cables removed, connect the HDMI source to the input, then connect HDMI displays to the outputs. Audio amplifiers/receivers can be connected via the analog or digital audio outputs. Crucially, the power supply should be screwed into the KD-DA1x4DC unit before plugging it into a power outlet. Once all connections are made, the power supply can be plugged in, and input/output devices can be powered on. For optimal performance with mixed 4K and 1080p displays, the Down-Convert switch should be set to AUTO. The service (factory) USB port is for factory servicing only and does not have standard USB functionality.

Overall, the Key Digital KD-DA1x4DC is a robust and intelligent HDMI distribution amplifier that simplifies complex video distribution scenarios by offering advanced features like 4K to 1080p down-conversion, comprehensive audio de-embedding, and sophisticated EDID management, all while ensuring reliable performance and ease of use in professional AV environments.
