VOICE RECOGNITION
1
AND BLUETOOTH
®2
Using Voice Recognition
Improve Bluetooth
®
Voice Recognition (VR) performance
by making a few simple changes to your phone contacts:
Use full names (first and last names) vs. short
or single-syllable names (“John Smith” vs. “Dad,”
“Smith Residence” vs. “Home”).
Avoid using special characters, emojis, and hyphenated
names (@, &, #, /, -, *, +, etc.).
Avoid using acronyms (“Emergency” vs. “ICE” or “In
Case of Emergency”) or words with all capital letters.
Spell words completely; system will not recognize
abbreviations (“Doctor Smith” vs. “Dr. Smith”).
Always wait for the beep before speaking
any commands.
When using VR to place a call, speak in a natural,
moderate tone, with clear pronunciation. The system
may have trouble recognizing commands if you speak
too softly or too loudly.
Open windows, sunroof, weather (wind/rain), or an
A/C fan operating at higher speeds can interfere with
VR accuracy.
Your VR system may have difficulty understanding
some accents or uncommon names.
Press the talk button and say “Help” to get a list of
available commands.
Pairing or Connecting Your Phone with Bluetooth
®
Press the Phone hard key (if equipped) or “Call” button
on the steering wheel to begin the pairing process if
no phone has previously been paired.
During the pairing process, please make sure you
accept all requests for phonebook download and
future auto-connection on your phone.
To pair a second phone or subsequent phones, reference
the manuals and guides supplied with your Seltos as
steps vary by radio.
If you experience any issues with auto-connection, try
the following:
Reboot your phone (turn the phone off and then on).
Update the phone operating system to the most
recently released version.
Delete the phone from the list of Bluetooth
®
devices
on the UVO display
1
and delete UVO from the list of
Bluetooth
®
devices on your phone, and re-pair.
Ensure the phone has the Bluetooth
®
feature
activated.
If some contacts are not downloading to the UVO
display, check to confirm that the contact has been
entered correctly and that it has been stored under
the categories (HOME, MOBILE, WORK, iPhone
®3
)
that are supported by the UVO display. Some
contact categories (MAIN, PAGER, OTHER) may not
be supported. If the number of contacts exceeds
the maximum number allowed on the UVO display,
contacts will be partially downloaded. Ensure that
only the “phone contact list” is selected for contact
download on your phone (not social media or email
contact lists as these contacts may not download
to the UVO display).
Phone operating systems change frequently and some
phones may have varying compatibility levels with the
Bluetooth
®
system. For any questions regarding the
features of your vehicle, please contact your preferred
Kia dealer or contact Kia Consumer Assistance at
1-800-333-4542.

Overview

This document provides a comprehensive guide to the features and functionalities of the 2021 Kia Seltos, covering various aspects from multimedia and connectivity to advanced driver-assistance systems and general vehicle operation. It serves as a supplementary resource to the Owner's Manual, Multimedia System Manuals, Features and Functions Guide, and Quick-Start Guide hangtag.

Multimedia USB Port, Power Outlets, and USB Charger Ports

The Seltos is equipped with multiple ports for power and connectivity.

  • Power Outlets (A): These are designed for mobile phones and other devices, operating on a 12V (180W max.) power output.
  • Multimedia USB Port (B): This port is used to connect USB audio devices and smartphones, enabling audio playback and data transfer.
  • USB Charger Port (C): This port is dedicated to recharging devices via a USB cable. For the USB Charger Port to operate, the Engine Start/Stop button must be in the ACC/ON/START position. Devices will only charge when the vehicle is in ACC/ON/Start position.
  • Usage Features: When plugging in a compatible USB device, users should ensure correct orientation as devices may be upside down. It is crucial to use USB charging cables certified by the device manufacturer, as aftermarket cables are not recommended due to potential functionality impacts.

Voice Recognition and Bluetooth®

The vehicle's Bluetooth® system allows for hands-free communication and audio streaming.

  • Function Description: The Voice Recognition (VR) system enables users to control various vehicle functions using voice commands, such as placing calls.
  • Usage Features for VR:
    • For optimal performance, phone contacts should use full names (e.g., "John Smith" vs. "Dad"), avoid special characters, emojis, hyphens, acronyms (e.g., "Emergency" vs. "ICE"), and words in all capital letters. Words should be spelled completely (e.g., "Doctor Smith" vs. "Dr. Smith").
    • Users should wait for a beep before speaking commands and use a natural, moderate tone with clear pronunciation.
    • Environmental factors like open windows, sunroof, or high A/C fan speeds can interfere with VR accuracy.
    • The system may have difficulty understanding certain accents or uncommon names.
    • Pressing the "Help" button provides a list of available commands.
  • Pairing/Connecting Phone with Bluetooth®:
    • Initiate pairing by pressing the Phone hard key (if equipped) or the "Call" button on the steering wheel.
    • During pairing, accept all requests for phonebook download and future auto-connection.
    • For pairing multiple phones, refer to the vehicle manuals.
  • Troubleshooting Auto-Connection Issues:
    • Reboot the phone (turn off and on).
    • Update the phone's operating system.
    • Delete the phone from the UVO display's Bluetooth® device list and delete UVO from the phone's Bluetooth® device list, then re-pair.
    • Ensure Bluetooth® is activated on the phone.
  • Contact Download Issues: If contacts don't download, verify they are entered correctly and stored under supported categories (HOME, MOBILE, WORK, iPhone®). Some categories (MAIN, PAGER, OTHER) may not be supported. If the number of contacts exceeds the UVO display's maximum, contacts will be partially downloaded. Ensure only the "phone contact list" is selected for download, not social media or email contact lists.
  • Technical Specifications: Phone operating systems change frequently, and compatibility levels with the Bluetooth® system may vary. For assistance, contact a Kia dealer or Kia Consumer Assistance.
  • Other Bluetooth® Tips: Reception is affected by carrier coverage and phone quality. When streaming audio, ensure the device's listening volume is turned up.

Smartphone Connectivity

The Seltos supports popular smartphone integration platforms.

  • Apple CarPlay®:
    • Function Description: Connects compatible iPhones to the UVO display, enabling calls, hands-free texts, music, apps, and Siri® voice control for navigation.
    • Usage Feature: To connect, visit https://youtu.be/N1FQ1VqDt4A.
  • Android Auto™:
    • Function Description: Connects compatible Android™ phones to the UVO display, providing access to music, dialer, navigation, and voice commands via an intuitive interface and steering wheel controls.
    • Usage Feature: To connect, visit https://youtu.be/QPV7y06-RJ4.

Idle, Stop & Go (ISG) System

  • Function Description: Designed to reduce fuel consumption by automatically shutting down the engine when the vehicle is at a standstill.
  • Usage Features:
    • When ISG is ON and the vehicle stops, the engine stops, and the AUTO STOP indicator (A) illuminates green.
    • If the engine does not stop, the AUTO STOP indicator (A) illuminates yellow, indicating the system is functional but not all enabling criteria are met.
    • The engine restarts when the brake pedal is released or the shift lever is moved from D (Drive) to R (Reverse) or Manual Shift mode. The green AUTO STOP indicator turns OFF.
    • To deactivate the ISG System, press the ISG OFF button (A). Pressing it again reactivates the system.
    • If the amber warning lamp is ON, the system is functional but not all enabling criteria are met.
    • If the AUTO STOP indicator continuously blinks yellow and the ISG button LED is ON, contact an authorized Kia dealer.

Remote Start with Key Fob

  • Function Description: Allows users to remotely start the vehicle using the smart key.
  • Usage Features:
    • To start: Lock the doors by pressing the door lock button within 32 feet (10 meters). Then, press the remote start button for over 2 seconds within 4 seconds of locking the doors.
    • To turn off: Press the remote start button once.
    • If no further action is taken after remote starting, the vehicle will turn off after 10 minutes.

Lane Following Assist (LFA) System

  • Function Description: Helps detect lane markers with a front view camera and assists in maintaining the vehicle between lanes.
  • Usage Features:
    • LFA Operation: Activated by pressing the button on the steering wheel when the ENGINE START/STOP button is in ON or START position.
    • Indicator Lights: The indicator illuminates white when in the ready state and green when in the enabled state.
    • LFA Activation: After activation, if the vehicle is within the lane, both lane markers are detected (lane color changes grey to white), and there is no abrupt steering, the indicator changes from white to green, indicating the system is ENABLED and steering wheel control is available. The indicator changes from green to white when control is temporarily canceled. If the system does not recognize the lane or if vehicle conditions restrict steering control, the activation indicator blinks green and then changes to white.
    • Steering Assist: When the vehicle is inside the lane with both lanes detected and no abrupt steering inputs, LFA enters steering assist mode. The indicator illuminates green, and LFA helps keep the vehicle in line. If steering inputs are not provided, the indicator flashes green and changes to white. Once lanes are recognized, the lane color on the screen changes from grey to white.
    • Warning Message: If hands are kept off the wheel while in Steering Assist mode, a hands-off warning is triggered. If the driver continues to keep hands off, steering assist is temporarily deactivated. Activating Smart Cruise Control* with LFA released will restart steering assist.
    • LFA Malfunction: If an LFA malfunction occurs, the instrument cluster displays "Check Lane Following Assist (LFA) system." This warning can also appear during adverse road conditions (rain, snow, dust, sand). If this warning appears, have the vehicle checked by an authorized Kia dealership.
  • Warnings: LFA is a supplemental system, not a substitute for safe driving. Drivers must operate the steering wheel while driving and should not turn it hastily if LFA is activated.

Dual-Clutch Transmission (DCT)

  • Function Description: Provides the driving feel of a manual transmission with the ease of a fully automatic transmission.
  • Usage Features:
    • To hold the vehicle stationary on an incline, the service brake or parking brake MUST be used, or the gear shift MUST be placed in (P) Park. Applying the accelerator pedal to hold the vehicle stationary can overheat the transmission.
    • Avoid aggressive launches on steep grades to prevent clutch overheating.
    • A slight time lag may be experienced at takeoff from a standstill during aggressive acceleration.
    • If clutches overheat, an amber warning lamp illuminates, and a message appears on the instrument cluster. In this case, safely pull over, place the vehicle in Park (P), and idle the engine.

Lane Keeping Assist (LKA)

  • Function Description: Helps prevent the vehicle from moving outside its lane by providing audible warnings and steering inputs.
  • Usage Features:
    • Activation: Press the LKA button (A) on the steering wheel when the Engine Start/Stop button is in the ON position. The instrument cluster indicator illuminates white. It remains white if the vehicle is traveling slower than 40 mph and lane markers are not detected. When LKA detects lane markers and can assist steering, the LKA icon illuminates green.
    • Lane Departure Warning (LDW) Alert: If the system detects the vehicle moving outside its lane, an audible warning and an LDW alert are displayed on the instrument cluster. If the vehicle continues to move outside the lane, LKA can provide steering inputs.
    • Modes: Switch between LKA and Lane Departure Warning modes via Vehicle Settings in the navigation unit or instrument cluster settings menu.
    • Operating Conditions: The system operates when the vehicle exceeds approximately 40 mph, is between lane markers, and LKA recognizes the lane.
    • LKA vs. LDW: LKA provides audible warnings and steering inputs. LDW only provides audible and visible alerts.
    • Sensitivity: Two levels of audible warning sensitivity (Normal and Late) are available in the settings menu.

Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA)

  • Function Description: Alerts the driver and, under certain conditions, applies emergency braking when rapidly approaching a slowing, braking, or stopped vehicle or pedestrian.
  • Usage Features:
    • Forward Collision Warning (FCW): Emits an audible warning and visual alert (A) on the instrument cluster when a potential collision is detected.
    • Alert Settings: Adjust settings (Active Assist, Warning Only, Off) in the instrument cluster or audio settings. FCA is ON by default and can be turned OFF in Vehicle Settings.
    • Automatic Braking: If collision risk increases, FCA automatically applies brakes to reduce speed and mitigate collision effects.
    • Activation Conditions: FCA/FCW becomes active when the Engine Start/Stop button is ON, vehicle speed is faster than 5 mph, and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) is ON.

Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA)

  • Function Description: Uses radar sensors in the rear bumper to alert the driver of approaching vehicles in the blind spot area.
  • Usage Features:
    • Activation: BCA activates when the vehicle is traveling faster than 20 mph and detects another vehicle.
    • System Settings: Activate BCA in Vehicle Settings > Driver Assistance > Blind Spot Safety (Active Assist, Warning Only, or Off). Set initial warning activation time in Vehicle Settings > Driver Assistance > Warning Time (Normal or Later).
    • Button Activation: Press the BCA button when the Engine Start/Stop button is ON. The button light illuminates, and outside rearview mirror warning lights illuminate for 3 seconds.
    • Active Assist: When selected, BCA may activate ESC and temporarily apply braking power if an approaching vehicle is detected within a certain distance. A warning message may appear on the Instrument Cluster LCD.
    • Alerts: 1st-stage alert: Yellow indicator illuminates on outside rearview mirrors. 2nd-stage alert: If 1st-stage alert is on and the driver activates a turn signal, a flashing yellow indicator illuminates, and an audible alert sounds.

Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA)

  • Function Description: Detects approaching vehicles from the rear-left or rear-right side of the vehicle and provides audible warnings, visual alerts, and may apply braking power.
  • Usage Features:
    • Alerts: Sounds an audible warning, illuminates warning indicators on outside rearview mirrors, and displays a message on the LCD Instrument Cluster.
    • Automatic Braking: RCCA may activate ESC and temporarily apply braking power to avoid imminent collisions.
    • Operating Conditions: Operates when the gear shift is in Reverse and the vehicle is moving slower than 6 mph.

Smart Cruise Control (SCC) with Stop & Go System

  • Function Description: Maintains a set speed and predetermined distance from detected vehicles ahead by automatically adjusting driving speed. Can bring the vehicle to a complete stop and re-engage when the vehicle ahead moves.
  • Usage Features:
    • Setting SCC Speed: Press the CRUISE button (A) to turn ON. Accelerate/decelerate to desired speed. Press (SET-) button (B) down to set speed. The SET indicator light, set speed, and vehicle-to-vehicle distance illuminate on the LCD screen. Adjust speed with (RES+) or (SET-) button (B).
    • Vehicle-to-Vehicle Distance (C, E): Press the SCC button (D) on the steering wheel to cycle through distance settings. The image on the LCD screen (E) changes. Approximate distances (172ft, 130ft, 106ft, 82ft) are based on a 56-mph vehicle speed.
    • Canceling SCC: Press the CANCEL button (B) or the brake pedal. An LCD message indicates SCC operation is canceled.
    • Turning OFF SCC: Press the CRUISE button (A). The CRUISE indicator turns OFF.

All-Wheel Drive (AWD) System

  • Function Description: Increases drive power for improved traction on wet pavement, snow-covered roads, and unpaved roads.
  • Usage Features:
    • AWD LOCK Mode (A): Select by pressing the AWD LOCK button.
    • Operating Conditions: Used for climbing/descending sharp grades, driving on unpaved, sandy, or muddy roads.
    • Automatic Deactivation: Deactivates at speeds above 38 mph and shifts to AWD AUTO mode. If the vehicle decelerates below 38 mph, it shifts back into AWD LOCK mode.
    • Drive Power Delivery: When AWD LOCK mode is deactivated, drive power is delivered entirely to the front wheels. A shock may be felt, but it is not a mechanical failure.

Drive Mode Integrated Control System

  • Function Description: Allows selection of different Drive Modes based on driver preferences and road conditions.
  • Usage Features: Rotate the DRIVE MODE knob (A) to cycle through NORMAL, SMART, or SPORT modes, which are displayed on the instrument cluster.
  • Function Description: Provides remote commands and vehicle status updates via a smartphone app.
