for activating a local energy type master box connected to a public fire
alarm reporting system.
Installation
Install the CTM in accordance with NFPA 70 National Electrical Code.
WARNING: This device will not operate without electrical power. As
fires frequently cause power interruptions, we suggest you discuss
further safeguards with your fire protection specialist.
The CTM is shipped from the factory as an assembled unit; it contains
no user-serviceable parts and should not be disassembled.
For more information, refer to the technical reference manual listed
inside the control panel door.
To install the module:
1. Verify that all field wiring is free of opens, shorts, and ground
faults.
2. Make all wiring connections as shown in the wiring diagram. See
Figure 1.
3. Using the 4-24 × 1/2 in (13 mm) self-tapping screw provided,
mount the wall plate to the module.
4. Using the two 6-32 × 1/2 in (13 mm) machine screws provided,
mount the module to the electrical box.
Wiring
Wire the CTM to a dedicated notification appliance circuit (NAC) as in
Figure 1 on page 2. Do not install other notification appliances on the
same circuit.

Overview

The CTM City Tie Module is a specialized device designed to provide a single municipal box connection for activating a local energy type master box, which is then connected to a public fire alarm reporting system. This module acts as an interface, allowing a dedicated notification appliance circuit (NAC) to trigger the municipal master box in the event of a fire alarm.

Function Description:

The primary function of the CTM is to facilitate communication between a fire alarm control panel's NAC and a municipal fire alarm system via a local energy type master box. When the NAC is activated, the CTM sends a signal to the master box's trip coil, initiating an alarm report to the public fire alarm system. This ensures that local fire alarms are promptly relayed to the municipal authorities. The module is shipped as an assembled unit and is not intended for user disassembly or internal servicing.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Voltage: 24 VDC nominal.
  • Current:
    • Standby: 20 mA
    • Alarm: 300 mA, maximum
  • Ground Fault Impedance: 0 Ω
  • Wire Size: 12 to 18 AWG (0.75 to 2.5 sq mm)
  • Mounting: Designed for installation in a North American 2-1/2 inch (64 mm) deep 1-gang box.
  • Municipal Box Connection:
    • Wire Resistance: 26 Ω
    • Trip Current: 200 mA into a 14.5 Ω coil
  • Operating Environment:
    • Temperature: 32 to 120°F (0 to 49°C)
    • Relative Humidity: 0 to 93% noncondensing (noncondensing environment)

Usage Features:

  • Dedicated NAC Connection: The CTM must be wired to a dedicated notification appliance circuit (NAC). It is crucial not to install other notification appliances on the same circuit to ensure proper operation and prevent interference.
  • Local Energy Type Master Box Compatibility: The module is specifically designed to work with local energy type master boxes. The NAC output signal must be compatible with the input rating of the local energy type master box to ensure reliable activation.
  • Supervised Circuits:
    • The power-limited circuit from the dedicated notification appliance circuit is supervised for opens, shorts, and ground faults.
    • The nonpower-limited circuit connecting to the municipal master box is supervised for opens and ground faults only. This circuit has a maximum resistance of 26 Ω and a maximum current of 4.4 A.
  • End-of-Line Resistor (EOLR): An EOLR is required for the NAC connection. The value of this resistor should be as specified by the notification appliance circuit requirements.
  • Installation Requirements: Installation must be performed in accordance with NFPA 70 National Electrical Code. Before installation, all field wiring must be verified to be free of opens, shorts, and ground faults.

Maintenance Features:

  • No User-Serviceable Parts: The CTM is a factory-assembled unit and contains no user-serviceable parts. Disassembly is not recommended.
  • Wiring Verification: Regular verification of wiring connections for integrity (no opens, shorts, or ground faults) is essential to ensure the device's operational readiness.
  • Power Dependency: The device requires electrical power to operate. In areas prone to power interruptions during fires, it is advised to discuss additional safeguards with a fire protection specialist to maintain system functionality.
  • Documentation: For detailed information and troubleshooting, users should refer to the technical reference manual typically found inside the control panel door.

The CTM City Tie Module is a critical component in fire alarm systems that rely on municipal reporting, providing a reliable and supervised link between local fire detection and public emergency services. Its robust design and specific technical requirements ensure its effectiveness in critical situations.
