Overview

The King Electrical Mfg. Co. PAW Squirrel Cage Electric Space Heater is a wall-mounted electric space heater designed for indoor use, providing supplemental heat to residential and light commercial spaces. It is available in various models within the PAW Series, as indicated by the manual covering "all PAW Series models."

Function Description:

The primary function of this device is to convert electrical energy into heat to warm a room. It utilizes a squirrel cage fan to circulate air over heating elements, distributing warm air efficiently. The heater is equipped with a thermal overload protection system, known as SLP Smart Limit Protection, which automatically disconnects the elements and motor if normal operating temperatures are exceeded, preventing overheating and potential fire hazards. This safety feature requires a manual reset after tripping, by turning the heater OFF for fifteen minutes and inspecting for obstructions. The heater can be controlled by an optional built-in thermostat or an external wall-mounted thermostat (single-pole or double-pole configurations are supported).

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Voltage and Wattage: The heater is designed to operate at specific voltages and wattages, which are selected during installation. For the 1215 120V 1500W model, it is factory wired to 1500 Watts at 120 Volts. Wattage can be reduced by unplugging insulated push-on terminals according to a color-coded scheme: Orange (750 Watt element), Blue (500 Watt element), Yellow (250 Watt element). The Black wire is common and should not be disconnected. For the 2022 208V 2250W and 2422 240V 2250W models, it is factory wired to 2250 Watts at 208/240 Volts. Wattage reduction is achieved by unplugging terminals: Orange (1000 Watt element), Blue (750 Watt element), Yellow (500 Watt element).
  • Electrical Requirements: Proper wire sizing and circuit breaker/fuse sizing are crucial for safe operation. The manual provides a "Wire and Breaker Sizing" chart:
    • 0 thru 12 Amps: #14 AWG wire, 15 amp breaker.
    • 12.1 thru 16 Amps: #12 AWG wire, 20 amp breaker.
    • 16.1 thru 24 Amps: #10 AWG wire, 30 amp breaker.
    • All wiring must comply with National and local electrical codes.
  • Installation Clearances:
    • Minimum 6 inches (15cm) from vertical side walls or open edge of door.
    • Minimum 6 inches from vertical sidewalls and 4 inches above the floor for wallbox installation.
    • The front edge of the wallbox must extend 1/2 inch beyond the finished wall surface.
    • Combustible materials (furniture, pillows, bedding, papers, clothes, boxes, curtains) must be at least 3 feet (0.9 m) from the front of the heater and kept away from the sides and rear.
    • Zero clearance to insulation is permitted.
  • Wallbox Dimensions: The wallbox should be installed a minimum of 6 inches from vertical sidewalls and 4 inches above the floor.
  • Construction: Features a steel sheath element and a squirrel cage fan.
  • Safety Certifications: UL Listed, indicating compliance with safety standards.

Usage Features:

  • Thermostat Control: The heater can be controlled by an integrated or external thermostat, allowing users to set and maintain a desired room temperature.
  • Wattage Selection (PIC-A-WATT): This feature allows installers to adjust the heater's wattage output by disconnecting specific internal wires, providing flexibility to match the heater's output to the room's heating needs and available circuit capacity. This helps prevent overloading circuits and ensures efficient operation.
  • Safety Overload Protection (SLP Smart Limit Protection): Automatically shuts off the heater if it overheats due to abnormal conditions, such as blocked airflow. This is a critical safety feature to prevent fire.
  • Indoor Use Only: The heater is strictly for indoor applications and should not be used outdoors, in bathrooms, laundry areas, or near water sources.
  • Initial Burn-Off: During the first operation, a puff of smoke may occur due to the burn-off of manufacturing lubricants. This is considered normal and should dissipate within 5 minutes.
  • Quiet Operation: While not explicitly stated as a feature, squirrel cage fans are generally known for quieter operation compared to axial fans, contributing to a more comfortable environment.

Maintenance Features:

  • Annual Maintenance: Basic maintenance should be performed annually by qualified service personnel.
  • Cleaning:
    • Grille: The grille can be removed and washed with hot, soapy water, then dried immediately.
    • Internal Components: A hair dryer or vacuum on blow cycle can be used to blow debris through the element and clean the squirrel cage fan. A soft bristle brush (like a paint brush) can also be used to wipe away loose debris. It is crucial not to touch the heating element during cleaning.
  • Troubleshooting Chart: The manual includes a comprehensive troubleshooting guide for common issues such as breaker trips, heater not working, heater smoking, and thermostat inaccuracies, providing solutions for basic problems.
  • Serviceability: The heater assembly can be removed from the wallbox by loosening a mounting screw, allowing access for inspection and repair by a qualified electrician.
  • Warranty: King Electrical Manufacturing Company offers a 1-year warranty on parts and labor for defects or malfunctions, provided the unit is installed and maintained according to the manual and applicable codes. Unauthorized returns are refused, and customers are responsible for removal, reinstallation, and shipping costs.

Safety Warnings and Precautions:

  • DANGER - Electric Shock or Fire Hazard: Emphasized throughout the manual, requiring users to read all instructions, wire sizing, voltage requirements, and safety data.
  • WARNING - Hot When In Use: Avoid direct skin contact with hot surfaces.
  • WARNING - Combustible Materials: Maintain specified clearances from combustible materials.
  • WARNING - Foreign Objects: Never insert objects into ventilation or exhaust openings.
  • WARNING - Flammable Vapors: Do not use or store gasoline, paint, or flammable liquids near the heater.
  • WARNING - Not for Construction Heat: The warranty is void if the heater is used for temporary heat during construction.
  • Lockout/Tagout: Before any maintenance or cleaning, turn OFF electrical power at the main disconnect panel (circuit breaker or fuse box) and lock or tag the panel door to prevent accidental re-energization.
  • Qualified Electrician: If uncomfortable with electrical work or unable to follow guidelines, consult a qualified electrician.
  • No Tampering: Do not tamper with or remove any safety devices or alter the heater's operation.
  • Children and Invalids: Exercise extreme caution when the heater is used by or near children or invalids, or when left operating unattended.
