Overview

The Klipsch Reference Premiere series embodies the legendary Klipsch sound, setting a high standard and benchmark for audio performance. These speakers are the result of an obsession with aural perfection, delivering power, detail, and emotion that has been a hallmark of Klipsch since 1946. Paul W. Klipsch revolutionized the audio industry with proprietary horn technology and acoustic principles, which remain the driving force behind their highly acclaimed signature sound.

Function Description:

The Klipsch Reference Premiere speakers are designed to reproduce audio with exceptional clarity, detail, and power, suitable for a wide range of listening environments, from stereo setups to complex home theater systems. The series includes various speaker types, such as floorstanding speakers (RP-8060FA, RP-8000F, RP-6000F, RP-5000F, RP-4000F), bookshelf speakers (RP-600M, RP-500M, RP-400M), surround speakers (RP-502S, RP-402S, RP-500SA), and center channel speakers (RP-504C, RP-404C, RP-600C, RP-500C, RP-400C). Many models are also compatible with Dolby Atmos® technology, offering an immersive, multi-dimensional sound experience.

At the core of these speakers is the 90° x 90° Silicon Composite Hybrid Tractrix® Horn. This horn loading design maximizes efficiency and enhances detail by focusing high frequencies directly towards the listening area. The proprietary Tractrix® geometry ensures the most efficient transfer of high-frequency waves, while a phase plug and compressed molded silicon face contribute to a smooth frequency response. This combination aims to produce the cleanest, most natural sound possible.

The Linear Travel Suspension (LTS) Titanium Diaphragm Tweeter is another key component, minimizing distortion for enhanced, detailed performance. LTS tweeters have been a hallmark of previous Reference lines, underscoring their importance in delivering high-quality sound. Complementing this, the vented tweeter design reduces standing waves that can create unwanted harmonics, further improving detail and clarity in high-frequency reproduction.

For mid and low frequencies, the speakers feature Spun Copper Cerametallic Woofers. These woofers are exceptionally rigid and lightweight, designed for minimal distortion and maximum efficiency. When paired with the Tractrix horn-loaded LTS tweeter, they contribute to the highest speaker efficiency in their class.

Usage Features:

The Klipsch Reference Premiere speakers offer flexible placement and connection options to optimize your audio experience.

Room Placement:

  • Left and Right Main Channel Speakers: For optimal stereo imaging, these speakers should ideally be placed 6 to 15 feet (1.8 to 4.6m) apart and may be toed-in slightly. The listening position should be approximately 1 to 1.5 times the distance separating the speakers.
  • Center Channel Speakers: Designed to anchor dialogue and primary sounds to the video screen, these speakers should be placed as close to the screen as possible, preferably directly on top of or below it.
  • Rear Surround Channel Speakers (Klipsch WDST): These speakers should be placed approximately 2 feet above the listening position, typically 5-7 feet above the floor. They can be positioned on the walls directly adjacent to the listening position or on the wall behind it, depending on room characteristics. They are engineered to recreate the sense of space and ambience common in modern surround sound technologies.
  • Dolby Atmos® Technology: For systems incorporating Dolby Atmos, specific speaker placement is crucial. Atmos Front and Rear speakers are positioned to create an overhead sound dimension. Side and Rear Surround speakers contribute to the immersive sound field. The RP-500SA model can be added to any passive loudspeaker setup to achieve elevation effects.

Connection:

  • Conventional Connection: Speakers should be connected to an amplifier using 16-12 gauge speaker wire. The RED “positive” (+) terminal of the speaker connects to the RED “positive” (+) terminal of the amplifier's channel, and the BLACK “negative” (-) terminal of the speaker connects to the BLACK “negative” (-) terminal of the amplifier's channel. It's important to ensure no bare wires touch other terminals to prevent shorts and equipment damage.
  • Dual Binding Posts: Models like RP-8060FA, RP-8000F, RP-6000F, RP-5000F, RP-4000F, and RP-160M are equipped with dual binding posts. For single-wire connections, the terminal connecting bar should remain in place. If bi-wire or bi-amp connections are desired, this bar must be removed.
  • Amplifier Requirements: Klipsch speakers are highly efficient and compatible with a wide range of amplifiers. They are 8-ohm compatible and can achieve very high output levels with low distortion. Users are advised to exercise caution with volume control, as excessive volume can cause permanent hearing damage and potentially damage the speakers. It's recommended to consult the dealer or amplifier manual to ensure compatibility.

Installation:

Some Klipsch speakers require the installation of feet or other accessories prior to use.

  • Monitor Wall Mount: For monitor speakers, felt bumpers can be applied, and the speaker can be mounted to a wall.
  • Center Channels: Rubber bumpers can be applied. Optional tilt rods are available for RP-600C, RP-500C, and RP-400C models.
  • Surround Speakers: Domed bumpers can be placed on the bottom or back (if wall-mounted).
  • Wall Mounting (for specific models like RP-500SA): Speakers can be mounted via a keyhole or threaded insert. For keyhole mounting, #10, 2.5"-3" panhead wood screws should be used, mounted into a wall stud or with anchors, leaving 1/4" exposed. For threaded inserts, 3/8-16 x 0.5" screws are used (wall brackets not included). Caution: Keyholes should not be used for ceiling mounting.

Aesthetics:

The Reference Premiere series features furniture-grade materials and finishes, such as a scratch-resistant Ebony vinyl finish with an elegant satin painted baffle, providing a premium look. Strong, flexible, removable grilles attach magnetically, allowing for an elegant transition from a powerful showstopper to a discrete performance piece. Dramatic details like copper anodized trim rings, cast aluminum feet, satin painted baffles, and a laser-etched logo treatment contribute to the modern, premium aesthetic of the series.

Maintenance Features:

  • Care and Cleaning: The only maintenance typically required for these speakers is occasional dusting. Abrasive or solvent-based cleaners, or harsh detergents, should never be used. The grilles can be cleaned with the brush attachment of a vacuum cleaner.
