Overview

This document serves as a user manual for Klipsch Synergy Series Black Label speakers, including subwoofers. It provides essential information for setup, operation, and maintenance of these audio devices.

Function Description

Klipsch Synergy Series Black Label speakers are designed to deliver high-quality audio reproduction, embodying the brand's legacy of horn technology and acoustic principles established in 1946 by Paul W. Klipsch. The product line includes various speaker types such as floorstanding speakers (F-300, F-200), bookshelf speakers (B-200, B-100), center channel speakers (C-200), and powered subwoofers (SUB 120, SUB 100). These speakers are engineered to provide powerful, detailed, and emotional sound, suitable for both music and home theater applications. The subwoofers, in particular, are designed to reproduce deep bass and deliver impactful low-frequency effects, enhancing the immersive experience of movies and music.

Usage Features

The manual outlines several key usage features and setup guidelines to optimize the performance of Klipsch Synergy Series Black Label speakers:

  • Speaker Placement: Detailed instructions are provided for optimal placement of different speaker types.

    • Left and Right Main Channel Speakers: These should be placed 6 to 15 feet (2 to 4.5m) apart and at least 24 inches (60.8cm) from back and side walls. A slight toe-in is suggested for better stereo imaging. The ideal listening position is 1 to 1.5 times the distance separating the speakers.
    • Center Channel Speakers: These are designed to anchor dialogue and primary sounds to the video screen. They should be placed as close to the screen as possible, ideally directly on top of or below it.
    • Rear Surround Channel Speakers (Klipsch WDST™): These should be positioned approximately 2 feet above the listening position, typically 5-7 feet above the floor. Placement on walls adjacent to the listening position is recommended, with an alternative option on the wall behind the listening position. The final placement depends on room characteristics, aiming to recreate a sense of space and ambience for surround sound technologies.
    • Subwoofers: For optimum bass performance, subwoofers should ideally be placed in a corner of the room on the same wall as the front channel speakers. Corner placement increases bass output, while placement along the middle of a wall or out in the room may decrease it. Users are encouraged to experiment with placement options and control settings to find the best sound for their room and taste. It's crucial to ensure the subwoofer is near an AC power outlet for its built-in amplifier.
  • Connecting Speakers:

    • Conventional Connection: For passive speakers, 16-gauge or larger speaker wire is recommended. The RED "positive" (+) terminal of each speaker should connect to the RED "positive" terminal of the amplifier's corresponding channel. Similarly, the BLACK "negative" (–) terminal of each speaker connects to the BLACK "negative" (–) terminal of the amplifier's channel. Care must be taken to prevent bare wires from touching other terminals to avoid short circuits and equipment damage.
    • Dual Binding Posts (Bi-wiring): Some Synergy speakers feature dual binding posts connected by a metal strip. This strip should not be removed for correct speaker function. Speaker wire should be connected to the top set of binding posts. Bi-wiring, if desired, requires consulting the receiver's manual.
    • Subwoofer Connections ("LINE IN"): Most modern surround receivers have a line-level subwoofer output (e.g., Subwoofer Pre Out, Sub Out, SW Out). A subwoofer cable should connect this output to the subwoofer's LEFT/LFE line input. Alternatively, Left and Right channel Pre-Amp Outputs from the receiver can be connected to the Left/LFE and Right inputs on the subwoofer.
  • Subwoofer Controls:

    • Level: When connected to a surround receiver's subwoofer output, first set the receiver's subwoofer volume to "half way" or "0 dB." Then, increase the subwoofer's volume (gain) until it matches the output of the main speakers. After this, the system's main amplifier or pre-amplifier volume control will manage both subwoofer and speakers. If connected to L/R Pre-Amp Outputs, there will be no subwoofer volume control on the receiver, so the subwoofer's gain control is set directly.
    • LOWPASS Control: This control determines the crossover point where low bass frequencies transition from the main speakers to the subwoofer. If the receiver has a crossover setting, turn the subwoofer's Lowpass Filter knob to its maximum (160Hz). For larger floorstanding speakers, set the crossover between 50Hz-90Hz. For smaller bookshelf or "satellite" speakers, set it between 90Hz-150Hz. The goal is to achieve a smooth blend of bass frequencies. If the receiver lacks a crossover setting, use the subwoofer's Lowpass Filter within these recommended ranges.
    • PHASE 0/180: This control acoustically matches the subwoofer's output to the main speakers. Select the 0° or 180° position that yields more output at the listening position.
    • Off/Auto/On Switch: In the "ON/AUTO" position, the subwoofer automatically turns on when it detects a signal and enters "standby mode" after 15-20 minutes of no signal. In the "OFF" position, the subwoofer remains off until manually switched back to "ON/AUTO."
    • Power LED Indicator: Located on the front baffle, this LED lights green when the amplifier is on and receiving a signal. If the LED is dark, the amplifier is off.
  • Amplifier Requirements: Klipsch speakers are highly efficient and compatible with a wide range of amplifiers. They are 8-ohm compatible and can achieve high output levels with low distortion. Users are advised to exercise caution with volume control, as excessive volume can permanently damage hearing and overdriving the amplifier can damage speakers. Consulting with a dealer is recommended to ensure amplifier suitability.

Maintenance Features

The manual provides straightforward maintenance guidelines:

  • Cleaning: Speakers should only be dusted occasionally with a dry cloth. Abrasive or solvent-based cleaners, or harsh detergents, should never be used. Grilles can be cleaned with the brush attachment of a vacuum cleaner.

  • Safety Instructions:

    • Read, keep, heed, and follow all instructions.
    • Do not use the apparatus near water.
    • Do not block ventilation openings; install according to manufacturer's instructions.
    • Avoid installing near heat sources (radiators, heat registers, stoves, other heat-producing apparatus).
    • Use only manufacturer-specified attachments/accessories.
    • Exercise caution when moving a cart/apparatus combination to prevent tip-over injury.
    • Do not expose the apparatus to dripping or splashing liquids, and ensure no liquid-filled objects (like vases) are placed on it.
    • To reduce the risk of fire/electrical shock, do not expose the apparatus to rain/moisture.
    • No naked flame sources, such as candles, should be placed on the product.
    • CAUTION: RISK OF ELECTRIC SHOCK. DO NOT OPEN. Voltages inside are hazardous to life; no user-serviceable parts are present. Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel.
    • Ensure the subwoofer is unplugged from the AC wall outlet before making any connections.
  • Product Registration: Users are encouraged to register their product online at www.klipsch.com/register to receive updates on new products and promotions. Personal information will not be resold. Registration information is not used for warranty purposes; users should retain their receipt for warranty claims.

  • Compliance Information: The product is eligible to bear the CE mark, conforming to European Union EMC Directive 2004/108/EC. A WEEE notice indicates that the appliance complies with European Directive 2002/96/EC concerning waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). This means the product should not be disposed of with household waste but deposited at an appropriate facility for recovery and recycling.
