Assembly:

The estimated assembly time for the tool chest is 2 minutes. The primary assembly instruction involves placing the chest on a compatible cabinet. To ensure stability and prevent slipping or tipping, it is recommended to remove the mat liner from the cabinet so that the chest bottom fits tightly into the recessed area of the cabinet.

Drawer Removal and Replacement:

  • Removal:
    1. Pull the drawer out until it is fully extended.
    2. Push down on the right-hand side lever to release it.
    3. Pull up on the left-hand side lever to release it.
    4. While holding both levers, pull the drawer outward until it releases from the drawer slide.
  • Replacement:
    1. Extend the drawer slides from the tool chest.
    2. Carefully insert the rail on each side of the drawer into the slots in the drawer slides, ensuring the drawer rail and slide remain aligned during retraction. Do not force them.
    3. Once inserted, completely close the drawer to set the slides in their regular operating positions.

Locking Mechanism:

The tool chest features a cam lock with round keys.

  • Key Identification: The key number will consist of the letters "HS" followed by a two-digit number. The lock will have a matching two-digit number.
  • Key Insertion: Identify the notch in the center of the lock. The raised tip on the key must be inserted into the lock in the direction of this notch.
  • Unlocking: To unlock the lid, insert the key so that the center notch on the lock aligns with the 6 o'clock position. This action will unlock the lid.

Safety Information:

  • Read and understand the entire manual before assembly, operation, or installation.
  • WARNING:
    • Be careful when opening more than one drawer, as the item may become unstable and tip over, potentially causing personal injury or product damage.
    • Distribute weight evenly in the chest to prevent personal injury or property damage.
  • CAUTION:
    • Be careful when closing the lid; remove hands before it closes completely to prevent personal injury.
    • Apply caster brakes (if applicable) unless moving the item.
    • Close and lock the lid and drawers before moving the box.
    • Ensure the lid lock is in the UNLOCKED POSITION before closing the lid. Failure to do so can damage the locking rods and lead to a defective lock system or personal injury.
    • For safety, do not move the item after stacking the top chest, intermediate chest, and bottom roller cabinet together, as it could tip over, resulting in personal injury or damage.
    • Do not stand on the product to avoid falls, personal injury, or product damage.
    • Do not mount the product on a truck bed or any other moving object, as this may cause personal injury or product damage.
    • Do not alter the product in any manner (e.g., welding external lock bars, attaching electrical equipment).
    • The maximum weight for each drawer should not exceed 100 lbs.

Maintenance Features:

Care and Cleaning:

  • Stainless Steel Surfaces: Regularly wipe down stainless steel surfaces using a quality stainless steel cleaner and a lint-free towel. Always wipe with the grain of the stainless steel to remove dust and fingerprints. Avoid using abrasive materials.
  • Liquid Spills: Immediately clean and thoroughly dry any water or other liquids spilled or splashed on the unit.
  • Protection: Keeping the tool chest covered will protect it from dust and moisture, which could potentially damage the unit.

Troubleshooting:

The manual provides a troubleshooting guide for common issues:

  • Problem: Difficult to turn the key in the lock after closing the lid.

    • Possible Causes: Key inserted at the wrong notch, lid not completely closed, lid liner too close to the front edge.
    • Corrective Actions: Locate the notch at the center of the lock and insert the key correctly, close the lid completely, reposition the lid liner.
  • Problem: Not all drawers latch after closing the lid.

    • Possible Cause: Drawers are not completely closed.
    • Corrective Action: Close each drawer completely. The latching mechanism is on the inside back panel of the chest.
  • Problem: Drawers appear completely closed, but one or more are not latched.

    • Possible Cause: Items may have fallen behind the drawers, interfering with the latching mechanism on the inside back panel of the chest.
    • Corrective Actions: Remove the lowest drawers and clear any obstructions. Replace drawers once resolved.
  • Problem: Drawers stick when attempting to open from the closed position.

    • Possible Cause: Drawer slides have a rubber stop at the end of every slide, and the drawer rail engages with this stop when the drawer is closed.
    • Corrective Action: Grease the rubber stop at the end of the slide to reduce resistance.

The Kobalt 9-Drawer Tool Chest comes with a 3-year limited warranty from the date of purchase. This warranty covers defective parts and workmanship but does not cover damage due to mishandling or abuse. The warranty provides specific legal rights, and other rights may vary by state.
