Overview

This document is an Owner's Manual for KOHLER Command PRO engines, specifically models CV173, CV200, and CV224. It provides essential information for safe operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of these engines.

Function Description:

The KOHLER Command PRO engines are internal combustion engines designed to power various equipment. The manual emphasizes the importance of reading all safety precautions and instructions before operation, and refers users to the operating instructions of the equipment powered by the engine. It also highlights the need to ensure the engine is stopped and level before any maintenance or service.

Important Technical Specifications:

The manual includes a table of engine specifications:

  • Models: CV173, CV200, CV224
  • CV173: Bore 2.75 in. (70 mm), Stroke 1.80 in. (45 mm), Displacement 10.6 cu. in. (173 cc)
  • CV200: Bore 2.87 in. (73 mm), Stroke 1.89 in. (48 mm), Displacement 12.2 cu. in. (200 cc)
  • CV224: Bore 2.87 in. (73 mm), Stroke 2.11 in. (53.5 mm), Displacement 13.7 cu. in. (224 cc)
  • Oil Capacity (Refill): 24 oz. (0.70 L) for all listed models
  • Spark Plug Gap: 0.030 in. (0.76 mm) for all listed models
  • Maximum Angle of Operation (@ full oil level): 25° for all listed models. Exceeding this angle may cause engine damage from insufficient lubrication.
  • Emission Control System: EM for U.S. EPA, California, and Europe. Tampering with the engine and its emission control system voids relevant certifications.
  • Fuel Requirements: Clean, fresh, unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 87 (R+M)/2 or higher (Research Octane Number (RON) 90 minimum). Gasoline up to 10% ethyl alcohol, 90% unleaded is acceptable. Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE) and unleaded gasoline blend (max 15% MTBE by volume) are approved. E15, E20, and E85 are NOT approved. Do not add oil to gasoline. Do not use gasoline older than 30 days.
  • Oil Recommendations: All-season KOHLER PRO 10W-50 Synthetic Oil is ideal, extending oil and oil filter change intervals to 300 hours when paired with a KOHLER PRO Extended Life Oil Filter. Alternative engine oils and filters require 100-hour change intervals. Oil must be API service class SJ or higher. Viscosity selection is based on air temperature at the time of operation, with a chart provided for guidance (e.g., 5W-30 for -20°F to 40°F, 10W-30 for 0°F to 80°F, SAE 30 for 32°F to 100°F, and KOHLER PRO 10W-50 for -20°F to 100°F).

Usage Features:

  • Pre-Start Checklist: Before each use, users should check oil and fuel levels, inspect fuel system components for leaks, clean cooling and air intake areas, ensure all shrouds and guards are in place, and check the spark arrestor (if equipped).
  • Starting Procedure: Includes instructions for turning on the fuel shut-off valve and engine on/off switch. For cold engines, the throttle should be set to FAST and choke to CHOKE/ON. For warm engines, the throttle should be set to RUN/FAST. The starter handle should be pulled slowly until past compression-STOP, then firmly pulled straight out. The choke should be gradually returned to OFF after the engine starts and warms up.
  • Cold Weather Starting Hints: Recommends using proper oil for the expected temperature, disengaging external loads, and using fresh winter-grade fuel.
  • Stopping Procedure: Advises removing loads by disengaging PTO driven attachments, moving the throttle to slow or idle, stopping the engine, and closing the fuel shut-off valve (if equipped).
  • High Altitude Operation: For operation at 4000 ft. (1219 meters) or above, a high altitude carburetor kit is required. Operating with the wrong engine configuration at a given altitude may increase emissions, decrease fuel efficiency, and damage the engine.
  • Engine Speed: Warns against tampering with the governor setting to increase engine speed, as overspeed is hazardous and voids the warranty.

Maintenance Features:

The manual provides a detailed maintenance schedule:

  • Before Every Use: Check oil level, air cleaner for dirty/loose/damaged parts, and precleaner for dirty/torn material.
  • After first 8 Hours: Change oil (not required if using KOHLER PRO 10W-50 full-synthetic oil).
  • Every 50 Hours or Annually (whichever comes first): Service/replace precleaner.
  • Every 100 Hours or Annually (whichever comes first): Change oil and oil filter, clean cooling areas, replace fuel filter (if equipped), and clean spark arrestor (if equipped).
  • Every 300 Hours: Replace air cleaner element and precleaner.
  • Every 300 Hours (specific procedures): Check and replace guide plate (if needed), and check and adjust valve clearance when the engine is cold. (These procedures should be performed by a Kohler authorized dealer).
  • Every 300 Hours (option with KOHLER PRO oil/filter): Change oil and filter (only if using KOHLER PRO 10W-50 oil and KOHLER PRO filter).
  • Every 500 Hours or Annually (whichever comes first): Replace spark plug and set gap.
  • Oil Level Check: Instructions for checking oil level using the dipstick, ensuring the engine is cool and level.
  • Oil and Filter Change: Detailed steps for draining old oil, removing the old filter, installing a new filter, refilling with new oil, and checking for leaks. Emphasizes changing oil while the engine is warm.
  • Spark Plugs: Instructions for cleaning, checking, and adjusting the gap, and torquing the plug to 20 ft. lb. (27 N·m).
  • Air Cleaner: Instructions for servicing the precleaner (washing with detergent, oiling) and replacing the paper element. Warns against operating with loose or damaged air cleaner components and states that the paper element cannot be blown out with compressed air.
  • Breather Tube: Ensure both ends are properly connected.
  • Air Cooling: Emphasizes proper cooling to prevent overheating by cleaning screens, cooling fins, and external surfaces. Warns against spraying water on wiring harness or electrical components.
  • Storage: For storage longer than 2 months, users should add Kohler PRO Series fuel treatment, run the engine for 2-3 minutes, change oil (unless using KOHLER PRO 10W-50), remove spark plug(s) and pour 1 oz. of engine oil into cylinder(s), replace spark plug(s), and crank the engine slowly to distribute oil. Store the engine in a clean, dry place.
  • Troubleshooting: A table lists common problems (e.g., Will Not Start, Hard Starting, Lacks Power) and possible causes (e.g., No Fuel, Improper Fuel, Dirt In Fuel Line, Dirty Screen, Incorrect Oil Level, Overloaded, Engine Dirty Air Cleaner, Faulty Spark Plug). It advises against servicing major engine components or items requiring special timing/adjustment procedures, recommending a Kohler authorized dealer for such work.

The manual also includes important safety warnings regarding explosive fuel, carbon monoxide, rotating parts, electrical shock, hot parts, and accidental starts. It provides contact information for Kohler authorized dealers and KohlerEngines.com for parts, service, and warranty information.
