Overview

The KONNWEI KW309 CAN OBDII+EOBD Code Reader is a diagnostic scan tool designed to interface with a vehicle's On-Board Diagnostics II (OBD II) system. This device is used to monitor emission control systems and key engine components, identify problems, and retrieve diagnostic information.

Function Description:

The primary function of the KW309 is to read and erase Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs), which are codes stored by the vehicle's on-board computer in response to detected problems. These codes help identify specific malfunctioning areas within the vehicle. The device can read both "Stored Codes" (also known as "hard codes" or "permanent codes") that illuminate the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL), and "Pending Codes" (or "maturing codes" / "continuous monitor codes") which indicate problems detected during the current or last driving cycle but are not yet serious enough to turn on the MIL.

Beyond code reading, the KW309 also provides access to several other diagnostic functions:

  • Live Data: Allows viewing of real-time Parameter Identification (PID) data from the vehicle's computer module(s). This includes engine RPM, vehicle speed, air flow, engine load, fuel pressure, fuel trim value, engine coolant temperature, ignition timing advance, or closed-loop status.
  • Record Data: Enables recording of PID data to help diagnose intermittent vehicle problems. A recording typically includes 5 frames of live data before a trigger event and several frames after.
  • Playback Data: Facilitates viewing of previously stored PID data, including recorded data immediately after recording.
  • Freeze Frame Data: When an emissions-related fault occurs, the OBD II system records a snapshot of the vehicle's operating parameters at that moment. The KW309 can retrieve and display this data, which is crucial for identifying the conditions under which a problem occurred.
  • I/M Readiness Status: This function checks the operation of the Emission System on OBD2 compliant vehicles. It's particularly useful before a vehicle undergoes a state emissions inspection. It indicates whether specific monitors (like Misfire, Fuel System, Comprehensive Components, EGR, Oxygen Sensor, Catalyst, EVAP System, Oxygen Sensor Heater, Secondary Air, Heated Catalyst, A/C System) have completed their diagnostic testing ("OK"), have not completed testing ("INC"), or are not supported by the vehicle ("N/A"). The device can display readiness status for both "DTCs Cleared" (since codes were erased) and "This Drive Cycle" (since the beginning of the current drive cycle).
  • Oxygen Monitor Test: Retrieves and displays O2 sensor monitor test results for the most recently performed tests. This helps identify problems related to fuel efficiency and vehicle emissions.
  • On-Board Monitor Test: Useful after servicing or erasing a vehicle's control module memory, this function retrieves and displays test results for emission-related powertrain components and systems, both continuously and non-continuously monitored.
  • Component Test: Allows initialization of a leak test for the vehicle's EVAP system, commanding the vehicle's on-board computer to start the test.
  • Vehicle Information: Enables retrieval of Vehicle Identification No. (VIN), Calibration ID(s), Calibration Verification Nos. (CVNs), and In-use Performance Tracking on supported vehicles.
  • Modules Present: Displays the module IDs and communication protocols for OBD2 modules in the vehicle.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Display: Backlit, 128 x 64 pixel display with contrast adjustment, ensuring readability in various lighting conditions.
  • Operating Temperature: 0 to 60°C (32 to 140 F°), allowing for use in a wide range of environmental conditions.
  • Storage Temperature: -20 to 70°C (-4 to 158 F°), indicating its durability for storage.
  • External Power: 8.0 to 18.0 V, supplied directly via the vehicle battery through the OBD II cable, eliminating the need for internal batteries for operation.
  • Vehicle Coverage: Designed to work with all OBD II compliant vehicles, including those equipped with the Control Area Network (CAN) protocol. This covers all 1996 and newer vehicles (cars and light trucks) sold in the United States, encompassing Domestic, Asian, and European models. It also supports a small number of 1994 and 1995 model year gasoline vehicles that are OBD II compliant.
  • Connectivity: Utilizes a standardized 16-cavity Data Link Connector (DLC) for communication with the vehicle's on-board computer.

Usage Features:

  • User Interface: The device features UP/DOWN scroll buttons for navigation and ENTER/ESC buttons for selection and returning to previous menus.
  • Language Selection: Supports multiple languages including English, French, German, Dutch, Spanish, Russian, and Portuguese, making it accessible to a broader user base.
  • Ease of Use: The manual outlines a clear procedure for connecting the device (ignition off, locate DLC, plug in, turn ignition on) and navigating its functions.
  • Troubleshooting: Provides guidance for common issues such as "Vehicle Linking Error" (e.g., verify ignition is ON, secure connection, vehicle OBD2 compliant) and "Operating Error" (e.g., reset tool, check DLC pins, verify vehicle battery voltage).
  • Diagnostic Process: When multiple control modules are detected, the tool prompts the user to select the module for data retrieval, typically the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) or Transmission Control Module (TCM).
  • Code Erasing Caution: Warns users that erasing DTCs will also delete "Freeze Frame" data and reset I/M Readiness Monitor Status to "Not Ready" or "Not Complete," emphasizing the importance of thorough review before erasing.

Maintenance Features:

  • Durability: The device is designed to be kept dry, clean, and free from oil, water, or grease.
  • Cleaning: Recommends using a mild detergent on a clean cloth to clean the exterior of the code reader when necessary.
  • Warranty: Konnwei offers a one-year limited warranty against defects in materials and workmanship from the date of original purchase, provided the product has not been damaged by improper use, accident, flood, lightning, or unauthorized repair.
  • Service Procedures: Users are advised to contact their local store, distributor, or Konnwei's website for questions or repair needs.
  • Safety Precautions: The manual emphasizes critical safety measures to prevent personal injury or damage to vehicles/tool, including performing tests in a safe environment, wearing eye protection, keeping clear of moving/hot engine parts, ensuring good ventilation, using wheel blocks, exercising caution around high-voltage ignition components, engaging parking brake, having a fire extinguisher nearby, and avoiding connecting/disconnecting equipment with ignition on or engine running.
