INSTRUCTIONS FOR MIDI INTERFACE
KORG MONOPOLY
USING THE MIDI INTERFACE
When you turn on the synthesizer for the first time, you will be in omni-on mode for receive (all channels). When
you select a receive channel or other set-up, this will be stored in memory and will be remembered for when you
subsequently turn on the synth - all parameters listed on the next page are stored.
If you want to put the machine back to the factory default settings at any time, switch the synth on whilst holding
the red push button pressed - hold for a couple of seconds then release.
RED PUSH BUTTON
Two modes are available by pushing the red push button. Before you press the red button however, make sure
that no notes are pressed on the synth otherwise the results may be unpredictable.
The keyboard notes required for set-up & transpose modes should be sent via MIDI from an external keyboard.
(DX7/D50 etc. etc.)
1) SET-UP MODE
Setting MIDI channels and assignments.
Give the red push button one short press (half a second) - then release. Follow this with a note or sequence of
notes as detailed on page 2. After selecting a channel you will be automatically returned to playing mode but after
making assignments you will need to press the ENTER key (Top C) to return to playing mode. This is to enable
you to make the multiple key presses required when re-assigning sources to destinations. (N.B. set-ups are stored
in non volatile memory).
2) TRANSPOSE MODE
Press and hold the red push button for four seconds - then release. Middle C will sound on the synth and
continue to sound until you press a key. The note that you press will be the new middle C for MIDI IN. You can set
any value up to two octaves up or down. Settings outside this range will be ignored. Note that transpose mode
cannot be entered from set-up mode.
ASSIGNING MIDI CONTROL SOURCES TO DESTINATIONS
SOURCES DESTINATIONS (d)=factory default
AFTERTOUCH off / modulation (d)/ p.bend / vcf / not used
CONTROLLER X off / vcf (d) / not used
CONTROLLER Y off / vcf / not used (d)
VELOCITY off (d) / vcf
Sources can control more than one destination at once, but a destination can only be controlled by one source at
a time. Thus if velocity is currently controlling VCF and then you switch aftertouch to VCF, velocity will then control
nothing until re-assigned.

Overview

This document provides instructions for the Kenton MIDI Interface for the Korg Monopoly synthesizer.

Function Description

The Kenton MIDI Interface allows the Korg Monopoly to send and receive MIDI data, integrating it into a broader MIDI setup. It supports various MIDI control messages, including note on/off, velocity, aftertouch, pitch bend, modulation wheel, and general-purpose controllers. The interface enables the synthesizer to operate in different MIDI receive modes (omni-on or specific channel) and allows for the assignment of MIDI control sources to various synthesizer destinations like VCF, modulation, and pitch bend.

Important Technical Specifications

MIDI Channels and Assignments:

  • Receive Channel: The interface supports 16 MIDI receive channels. Selecting a channel automatically sets the MIDI to omni-off mode, meaning it will only receive on the selected channel.
  • Omni-on Mode: This is the default receive mode, allowing the synthesizer to receive MIDI data on all channels.
  • Controller X and Y: These are user-assignable MIDI controllers. By default, Controller X responds to MIDI controller 16 (General Purpose Controller 1, 10 hexadecimal) and Controller Y responds to MIDI controller 17 (General Purpose Controller 2, 11 hexadecimal). These can be assigned to any MIDI controller by operating the desired controller during setup.
  • Control Change Commands Recognized (decimal):
    • 121: Reset all controllers
    • 123: All notes off
    • 124: Omni mode off (always poly)
    • 125: Omni mode on (always poly)
    • 126: Mono mode (all notes off)
    • 127: Poly mode (all notes off)
    • 01: Modulation wheel
    • 94: Select transpose mode
    • 95: Select set-up mode
  • Other Commands Recognized (hexadecimal):
    • 8nH: Notes off
    • 9nH: Notes on & velocity
    • BnH: Control change (see above)
    • DnH: Channel pressure (aftertouch)
    • EnH: Pitch-bend change
    • FEH: Active sensing
  • MIDI Control of Red Push Button: The red push button functions can be triggered via MIDI:
    • MIDI switch number 95 (5Fh) for regular program mode.
    • MIDI switch number 94 (5Eh) for transpose mode.
    • Hexadecimal BX - 5F - 00 = program mode (where X is the current MIDI channel).
    • Hexadecimal BX - 5E - 00 = transpose mode (where X is the current MIDI channel).
    • During program/transpose modes, MIDI is in omni-on mode.

MIDI Connectors:

  • MIDI IN: Connects to a MIDI OUT or MIDI THRU.
  • MIDI OUT: Sends signals from the synthesizer to another instrument.
  • MIDI THRU: An exact copy of the MIDI IN signal, allowing multiple instruments to be chained.
  • Cable Wiring (5-pin DIN):
    • Only two connections plus an earth connection are required.
    • Pins 1 & 3 are not used.
    • Pin 2 (centre pin) is for screen (earth).
    • Pin 4 of one plug connects to Pin 4 of the other.
    • Pin 5 of one plug connects to Pin 5 of the other.
    • Cables should be labeled "MIDI IN" and "MIDI OUT" to avoid confusion.

Usage Features

Initial Power-On:

  • Upon first power-on, the synthesizer defaults to omni-on mode for MIDI receive.
  • Any selected receive channel or other setup parameters are stored in non-volatile memory and recalled on subsequent power-ons.

Factory Default Reset:

  • To restore factory default settings, switch the synth on while holding the red push button for a couple of seconds, then release.

Red Push Button Modes:

  • Ensure no notes are pressed on the synth before using the red push button to avoid unpredictable results.
  • Keyboard notes for setup and transpose modes should be sent via MIDI from an external keyboard (e.g., DX7/D50).

1) Set-Up Mode (Setting MIDI channels and assignments):

  • Activation: Give the red push button one short press (half a second) and release.
  • Channel Selection: Follow with a note or sequence of notes as detailed on page 2. Selecting a channel automatically returns to playing mode.
  • Assignments: After making assignments, press the ENTER key (Top C, MIDI note number 96) to return to playing mode. This allows for multiple key presses needed for re-assigning sources to destinations. Set-ups are stored in non-volatile memory.
  • Controller X/Y Assignment:
    • Press the red push button twice to enter SET-UP mode.
    • Operate the desired MIDI controller (for X, before pressing C or Db; for Y, before pressing A or Bb).
    • If no controller is operated, X defaults to MIDI controller 16, and Y defaults to MIDI controller 17.
  • Controller Priority: Controller X/Y takes priority over other control messages. If, for example, the mod wheel is assigned to Controller X/Y, mod wheel messages will operate whatever Controller X/Y is assigned to, instead of operating modulation.
  • Multiple Assignments: The first assignment for a given source (e.g., aftertouch) cancels all previous destinations for that source. To make multiple assignments (e.g., aftertouch to VCF and pitch bend), these must be done in the same setup session before pressing the ENTER key.

2) Transpose Mode:

  • Activation: Press and hold the red push button for four seconds, then release.
  • Functionality: Middle C will sound on the synth and continue until a key is pressed. The pressed key becomes the new MIDI IN middle C.
  • Range: Transpose value can be set up to two octaves up or down; values outside this range are ignored.
  • Note: Transpose mode cannot be entered from set-up mode.

Assigning MIDI Control Sources to Destinations:

  • Sources: Aftertouch, Controller X, Controller Y, Velocity.
  • Destinations (d=factory default):
    • Aftertouch: off / modulation (d) / p.bend / vcf / not used
    • Controller X: off / vcf (d) / not used
    • Controller Y: off / vcf / not used (d)
    • Velocity: off (d) / vcf
  • Rules: Sources can control multiple destinations, but a destination can only be controlled by one source at a time. If a destination is reassigned, the previous source controlling it will revert to controlling nothing until re-assigned.

Receive Channel and Omni-on Setting:

  • These settings return directly to playing mode after selection. All other key presses keep the unit in SET-UP mode until the ENTER key (Top C) is pressed.

ENTER Key (Top C):

  • Resets all controllers to their default values (mostly off, volume to on, pitch bender to centre).

Maintenance Features

Warranty:

  • All Kenton MIDI Kits come with a 12-month "back to base" warranty from the purchase date.
  • Customers are responsible for arranging and paying for carriage to and from Kenton Electronics for warranty service.
