How to start a KTM 2006 660 SMC Motorcycle if the engine will not start?
    • J
      Javier MolinaAug 14, 2025
To address an engine that won't start on your KTM Motorcycle, ensure the ignition and emergency OFF switch are on, the fuel tap is open, and there's sufficient fuel in the tank. Avoid using the choke unnecessarily. If the motorcycle has been idle for over a week, drain old fuel from the float chamber. For a flooded engine, 'pump it free' by using the hand decompression lever, fully revving the engine, and actuating the kickstarter multiple times. Dry or replace a sooty or wet spark plug, adjusting the electrode gap to 0.9 mm. Check for a strong spark by grounding the spark plug. Inspect and clean the ignition system connectors, emergency OFF switch, and carburetor, ensuring the carburetor is correctly fitted.

Replace the cooling liquid, using antifreeze. Shorten or replace any bent cooling hoses. Inspect the thermostat for proper function (opening temperature 70°C). Contact a KTM dealer to check the thermoswitch. Verify the fan operates correctly by starting the engine and bypassing the connections to the thermoswitch.
