Overview

The Lancaster Water Treatment GNE E3-m is a whole-house water filtration system designed to simplify water treatment for residential use. It utilizes a metered bypass solution to monitor water usage and provide timely notifications for filter replacement.

Function Description

The primary function of the GNE E3-m system is to filter incoming cold water for the entire home, reducing contaminants such as lead, PFOA/PFOS, chlorine, and chloramine. The system incorporates a real-time dynamic LED system that monitors water flow rate and provides visual, color-coded notifications to the homeowner regarding filter life. A metered bypass solution allows for easy installation and maintenance, enabling users to bypass the filter for specific tasks or during filter replacement. The system is designed to be installed before the main water line connects to the water heater.

Substance Reduction (NSF/ANSI Standard 53):

  • Lead: Influent Challenge Concentration 0.15 +/- 10% (MG/L), Maximum Permissible Product Water Concentration 0.005 (MG/L)
  • Cyst: Influent Challenge Concentration Minimum 50,000/L, Maximum Permissible Product Water Concentration 99.95%
  • PFOA/PFOS: Influent Challenge Concentration 1.5 +/- 10% (MG/L), Maximum Permissible Product Water Concentration 0.07 (MG/L)

Usage Features

Installation: The system should be installed before the main water line connects to the water heater. It requires a grounded and unswitched 115-volt outlet. A ground clamp or jumper wiring is necessary to maintain an electrical ground in metal plumbing systems. Three feet of open space above the system is recommended for cartridge replacement. The inlet and outlet are 1" threaded MNPT connections. Hand-tightening is emphasized for all connections to prevent damage and voiding the warranty. The system is designed for cold water supply only.

Water Totalizer Notifier: The system includes a water meter that tracks gallons of water processed. An umbrella cap on top of the unit houses LEDs that provide visual filter life notifications:

  • Green: 0-90% of programmed totalizer maximum (Filter Good)
  • Yellow: 90-100% of programmed totalizer maximum (Change Soon - 10% of filter life remaining)
  • Red: Greater than 100% of programmed totalizer maximum (Change Now) When water flows, the LEDs alternately turn off in a 1-2-3-2 pattern, with frequency corresponding to flow rate. If no pulse edges are detected for 2 seconds, all LEDs turn on solid. A blue LED (middle LED) indicates a low battery.

Programming the Totalizer: The pushbutton on the electronics board allows for resetting the totalizer and programming the maximum gallon limit.

  • Resetting Totalizer: Press and hold the button for 3 seconds. LEDs will flash green 3 times to confirm reset. Green LEDs (LED1) represent 100,000s, and blue LEDs (LED2) represent 10,000s.
  • Programming Maximum Value: Press and hold the button while powering up the board. LED1 (right LED) represents 100,000s place (green), and LED2 (middle LED) represents 10,000s place (blue). Both LEDs flash at 1 Hz, with the number of flashes indicating the current setting for that digit. Pressing the button for less than 1 second increments the value. Holding for greater than 1 second saves the setting and moves to the next digit. The range for programming is 10,000 to 990,000 gallons.

Power Monitoring and Battery Mode: The board monitors both 12VDC and battery power. In case of power failure without batteries, the current totalizer value is saved to non-volatile memory and resumes when power is restored. During battery mode, LEDs shut off, but if the totalizer is in yellow or red state, or battery voltage is low, the right LED flashes in the appropriate color for 0.125 seconds every 30 seconds.

Maintenance Features

Filter Replacement: The E3-m system uses snap-ring technology for tool-free filter replacement.

  1. Turn off water supply: Shut off inlet and outlet valves on the bypass.
  2. Drain system (optional): Install a 3/8" PEX tubing hose to the provided fitting and shut-off to drain sediment or aid filter removal.
  3. Remove umbrella cap: Replace 3-AAA batteries annually. Push and hold the reset button on the metered board for 3 seconds to reset the totalizer. Green LEDs flash 3 times to confirm reset.
  4. Depressurize system: Push the red depressurization button on the top cap until all air/water pressure is released.
  5. Remove retaining ring: Push down on the top cap with both hands to unseat the retaining ring, then grasp the handle and pull inward, then upward.
  6. Remove top cap: Lift up on the top handles. The filter adapter (yellow/white) may come loose and should be reinstalled into the bottom connection for the new filter.
  7. Flush bottom of system: Open the fitting and shut-off.
  8. Install new cartridge: Remove packaging, place the new cartridge into the tank with the O-ring down, aligning it with the bottom center opening. Press down to seat the O-ring.
  9. Reattach top cap and snap ring: Place the top cap, then reattach the snap ring, pulling up to seat O-rings.
  10. Turn on water supply: Open inlet and outlet valves on the bypass.
  11. Relieve air: Push the red depressurization button until all air pressure is released and water comes out.
  12. Check for leaks: Release the button and check for leaks.
  13. Flush new cartridge: Run water for 10 minutes to flush the system. Confirm green LED lights are flashing during flush. If not, recheck step 3.

General Maintenance:

  • New cartridges must be flushed for a minimum of 10 minutes prior to use.
  • The system should not be used with microbiologically unsafe or unknown quality water without adequate disinfection.
  • 3-AAA batteries for the umbrella cap are not included and should be changed annually with filter change-out.
  • The meter assembly is preset to 100,000 gallons but can be adjusted.
