Do you have a question about the Lanzar OPTI 1200HC and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Lanzar Opti High Current Power Amplifier is a car audio amplifier designed for powerful bass reproduction in mobile environments. It utilizes advanced high-speed switching technology, distinguishing it from less efficient Class AB designs. This amplifier is specifically engineered for low-frequency information and is not capable of reproducing mid/high-frequency content due to noise introduced by the switching power supply, which is filtered out of the audio signal. The integrated DC to DC switching power supply is designed to provide ample headroom for demanding peak and dynamic ranges found in modern recordings.

Key Features:

  • High Current Design: Ensures robust power delivery.
  • Power Supplies: Features stiffly regulated PWM power supplies with MOSFET switches that maintain rated power across a wide range of battery voltages.
  • Low Pass Filter: Adjustable from 50Hz to 120Hz (or 50Hz to 150Hz for OPTI1200HC/2200HC models) with a 24dB per octave slope. This allows for precise adjustment of the upper frequency bandwidth for the connected subwoofer.
  • Variable Subsonic Filter: Adjustable from 20Hz to 50Hz with a 24dB per octave slope. This feature attenuates inaudible low frequencies, preventing unnecessary strain on the amplifier and improving overall sound quality.
  • Protection Circuitry: Incorporates safeguards against thermal overload, short circuits, and other fault conditions.
  • Remote Dash-Mount Gain Control: Comes with a compact remote gain controller for convenient adjustment from the vehicle's dashboard.
  • Cooling Fan(s): Integrated for efficient heat dissipation, especially during prolonged high-power operation.
  • Line Out RCA Jacks: Allows for building multiple amplifier systems without the need for splitter cords. RCA inputs are fed into the first amplifier, and the line out jacks feed subsequent amplifiers.
  • Input RCA Jacks: Standard inputs for signal cables from the source unit, requiring high-quality shielded RCA cables.
  • Level Control: Enables matching input levels from the head unit (or other signal sources) to the amplifier's output levels.
  • Variable Bass Boost Control: Provides up to 18dB of bass enhancement in the lower frequency range.
  • Crossover Mode Selector: Determines the mode of the built-in crossover, offering low pass (for low-frequency signals to speakers), high pass (for high-frequency signals to speakers), or flat (full range) options.
  • Power & Protection Indicators: LEDs provide instant status information, including short-circuit and thermal overload alerts.
  • Data Link: Specific to certain models, this feature allows for linking multiple amplifiers.
  • Subsonic Switch (On/Off): Activates or deactivates the subsonic filter.
  • Bass Boost Frequency: Adjusts the specific frequency (40Hz-100Hz) at which the bass boost is applied.
  • Bridged Switch (Master/Slave): Used when bridging multiple amplifiers, designating one as master and others as slaves.
  • Phase Shift Control: Adjustable from 0 to 180 degrees to compensate for timing differences between subwoofer drivers and other speakers, improving bass integration.

Installation and Usage:

  1. Mounting: Find a suitable location with sufficient airflow and securely bolt the amplifier.
  2. Ground Connection: Connect the power ground terminal to the nearest chassis point using 4 gauge wire, keeping it under one meter (39") in length.
  3. Remote Terminal: Connect the remote terminal to the head unit's remote output using 14 gauge wire.
  4. Power Connection: Install an empty fuse holder within 300mm (12") of the battery. Run 4 gauge or larger high-quality cable from this fuse to the amplifier's "BATT" connection. Do not insert the fuse yet.
  5. Multiple Amplifiers: For multiple amplifiers, use separate fused cables from the battery or a #0 or #2 cable from the battery fuse holder to a distribution block near the amplifiers.
  6. RCA Connections: Use high-quality RCA-RCA cables for all line inputs and outputs.
  7. Fuse Insertion: Insert the fuse(s) into the battery fuse holder(s) only after all other connections are made.
  8. Pre-Power Check: Recheck all connections before powering up.
  9. Initial Settings: Set all level controls to their least sensitive positions and all crossover controls/switches to the desired frequency or position.
  10. Level Adjustment: Once powered up, set the head unit volume to about the 2 o'clock position, then adjust amplifier level controls for maximum output.
  11. Fine Tuning: Further fine-tuning of controls may be necessary to achieve desired audio results.

Maintenance and Troubleshooting:

  • Amplifier Not Powering Up:
    • Check for a good ground connection.
    • Verify the remote DC terminal has at least 13.8V DC.
    • Confirm battery power on the + terminal.
    • Check all fuses.
    • If the Protection LED is lit, briefly shut off and then repower the amplifier. If it remains lit, the amplifier may be faulty.
  • High Hiss or Engine Noise (Alternator Whine):
    • Disconnect all RCA inputs to the amplifier(s). If the noise disappears, reconnect components one by one to identify the faulty/noisy component.
    • Set the amplifier's input level as insensitive as possible and drive a high signal level from the head unit to achieve the best signal-to-noise ratio.
  • Protection LED Comes On (After Power Up):
    • Check for shorts on speaker leads.
    • Ensure the head unit volume is turned down low.
    • Remove speaker leads and reset the amplifier. If the Protection LED still comes on, the amplifier is faulty.
  • Amplifier Gets Very Hot:
    • Check that the minimum speaker impedance for the model is correct.
    • Check for speaker shorts.
    • Ensure good airflow around the amplifier. An external cooling fan may be required in some applications.
  • Distorted Sound:
    • Verify that the Level control(s) match the signal level of the head unit.
    • Ensure all crossover frequencies are properly set.
    • Check for shorts on speaker leads.
  • High Squeal Noise from Speakers:
    • This is typically caused by a poorly-grounded RCA patch cord.
