Overview

This document is an operator's manual for a Lawn-Boy Insight™ Lawn Mower, Model No. 10684C, with serial numbers 250000001 and up. It provides comprehensive instructions for safe operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.

Function Description:

The Lawn-Boy Insight™ Lawn Mower is a walk-behind rotary lawn mower designed for cutting grass and leaves. It features a self-propel drive system to assist with movement and offers multiple clipping disposal options: mulching, bagging, and side discharge. The mower is powered by an engine that requires unleaded regular gasoline and SAE 30W detergent oil.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model Number: 10684C
  • Serial Number Range: 250000001 and Up
  • Engine Oil Type: SAE 30W detergent oil with an API service classification of SF, SG, SH, SJ, SL, or higher.
  • Maximum Engine Oil Fill: 20 oz.
  • Fuel Type: Fresh unleaded regular gasoline.
  • Blade Bolt Torque: 60 ft-lb (82 N·m).
  • Spark Plug Torque: 15 ft-lb (20 N·m).
  • Cutting Height: Adjustable, with recommendations for different grass lengths (e.g., not below 2 inches (51 mm) for general cutting).
  • Safety Standards: Meets or exceeds CPSC blade safety requirements for walk-behind rotary lawn mowers and ANSI B71.1-2003 specifications.
  • Engine Exhaust: Contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm.
  • Spark Arrester: This engine is not equipped with a spark arrester muffler, making its use on forest-covered, brush-covered, or grass-covered land a violation of California Public Resource Code Section 4442. Other states or federal areas may have similar laws.
  • Ignition System: Complies with Canadian ICES-002.

Usage Features:

  • Starting the Engine: Involves firmly pushing a red primer bulb (3 times for temperatures above 55°F (13°C), 5 times for colder temperatures) and holding the blade control bar against the handle while using the recoil starter.
  • Self-Propel Drive: Activated by squeezing the self-propel drive (lower) bar towards the handle. The maximum ground speed is fixed, but speed can be reduced by increasing the space between the self-propel drive bar and the handle.
  • Stopping the Engine: Release the blade control (upper) bar. The engine and blade should stop within 3 seconds.
  • Cutting Height Adjustment: All four wheels have levers that can be moved forward to raise the mower or rearward to lower it. All wheels should be set to the same height.
  • Clipping Disposal Options:
    • Mulching: The mower comes factory-ready for mulching. Requires the mulch plug to be in place.
    • Bagging: Use the grass bag to collect clippings. Requires removing the side discharge chute (if present) and locking the side discharge door.
    • Side Discharging: For very tall grass. Requires removing the grass bag (if present), inserting the mulch plug, and installing the side discharge chute.
  • Handle Adjustment: The upper handle height can be adjusted for user comfort by loosening and tightening a knob.
  • Operating Tips:
    • Clear the area of debris before mowing.
    • Avoid striking solid objects.
    • Stop the engine immediately if the mower strikes an object or vibrates abnormally.
    • Cut only about a third of the grass blade at a time.
    • Mow at the highest setting for grass over 6 inches (15 cm) tall, then mow again at a lower setting.
    • Mow only dry grass or leaves to prevent clumping and engine stalling.
    • Alternate mowing direction for even fertilization.
    • Consider setting front wheels one notch lower than rear wheels for improved appearance.
    • For cutting leaves, ensure half of the lawn shows through the cut leaf cover, making multiple passes if necessary. Adjust cutting height for thick leaf cover and slow down if leaves are not cut finely enough.

Maintenance Features:

  • Recommended Maintenance Schedule:
    • Each Use: Check engine oil level, remove grass clippings and dirt from under the housing.
    • 1 Year (25 Hours): Replace air filter, change engine oil (after the first 2 operating hours, then yearly), replace/sharpen blade, lubricate wheel gears.
    • 4 Years (100 Hours): Replace spark plug, clean cooling system.
    • Annual Storage: Empty fuel tank, prepare mower for storage.
  • Preparing for Maintenance: Always stop the engine, wait for all moving parts to stop, and disconnect the spark plug wire before performing any maintenance.
  • Engine Oil: Fill with SAE 30W detergent oil. Change after the first 2 operating hours, then yearly. Warm oil flows better for draining. Dispose of used oil properly.
  • Air Cleaner: Replace the air filter yearly, or more frequently in dusty conditions.
  • Blade: Examine regularly for damage, cracks, dullness, or nicks. Replace or sharpen as needed. Requires a torque wrench for proper installation (60 ft-lb / 82 N·m). Wear cloth or leather gloves when servicing.
  • Wheel Gears: Lubricate inner and outer sides of the gear.
  • Self-Propel Drive Cable: Adjustable if the mower does not self-propel properly.
  • Cleaning the Mower: With the engine running on a paved surface, spray water in front of the right rear wheel to clean clippings from under the housing. Run the engine for a few minutes afterward to dry the housing.
  • Storage: Store in a cool, clean, dry place. For annual storage, add fuel stabilizer, run the engine dry, disconnect the spark plug, add 1 oz. (30 ml) of oil through the spark plug hole, pull the starter rope slowly, and loosely install the spark plug.
  • Safety/Instruction Decals: Important decals are located near potential danger areas and should be replaced if damaged.
  • Warranty: A Two-Year Full Warranty for residential use (45-day Limited Warranty for commercial use) covers defects in materials or workmanship. Regular maintenance costs are not covered. Owners are responsible for maintaining the product as described in the manual.
