Overview

This document is an operator's manual for the Lawn-Boy Insight™ Lawn Mower, Model No. 10695, with serial numbers 250000001 and up. It provides comprehensive instructions for safe operation, maintenance, and storage of the device.

Function Description:

The Lawn-Boy Insight™ Lawn Mower is designed for cutting grass and leaves. It is a walk-behind rotary lawn mower that can mulch clippings, bag them, or discharge them from the side. The mower is powered by an engine, and its operation involves a blade that rotates to cut vegetation. It features a self-propel drive system, allowing the user to walk with the mower as it automatically keeps pace. The cutting height is adjustable, enabling users to customize the lawn's appearance.

Usage Features:

The manual emphasizes safety as a primary concern, starting with a prominent "STOP" section for immediate contact information if users encounter questions or problems. It advises reading the entire manual before starting the engine.

Starting and Stopping: To start the engine, the user must turn the fuel valve lever to the "On" position, move the choke lever to the "Choke" position, and then hold the blade control bar against the handle while using the recoil starter. The choke lever automatically moves to the "Off" position once the engine starts. To stop the engine, the user simply releases the blade control bar, which should stop both the engine and blade within 3 seconds. If they do not stop properly, the user is instructed to contact an Authorized Service Dealer immediately.

Handle Adjustment: The upper handle height can be adjusted for user comfort by loosening a knob, moving the handle to the desired position, and then tightening the knob. The handle can also be folded forward for storage by loosening the upper handle knob, stepping on a foot pedal, and moving the handle forward.

Cutting Operations:

  • Mulching: The mower comes factory-ready to mulch grass and leaf clippings. Before mulching, any grass bag or side discharge chute must be removed, and the mulch plug must be securely locked in place.
  • Bagging: For collecting clippings, the grass bag is used. If a side discharge chute is on the mower, it must be removed, and the side discharge door locked before bagging. The grass bag is installed by rotating a latch rod, routing the starter rope, and inserting the bag handle into grooves.
  • Side Discharging: This mode is for cutting very tall grass. If the grass bag is on, it must be removed, and the mulch plug inserted. The side discharge chute is installed by unlocking and lifting the side discharge door, then placing the chute and closing the door.

Operating Tips: The manual provides several tips for optimal performance and safety, such as clearing the area of debris, avoiding striking solid objects, stopping the engine immediately if the mower vibrates abnormally, and replacing the blade before the cutting season. It also advises cutting only about a third of the grass blade at a time, avoiding cutting below a 2-inch setting unless grass is sparse or in late fall. For grass over 6 inches tall, it recommends mowing at the highest setting first, then at a lower setting. Users should only mow dry grass or leaves to prevent clumping and stalling. Alternating mowing direction helps disperse clippings evenly.

Maintenance Features:

The manual includes a "Recommended Maintenance Schedule" with tasks to be performed at specific intervals.

Each Use:

  • Check engine oil level.
  • Check air cleaner for dirt/damage and clean/replace if necessary.
  • Remove grass clippings and dirt from under the housing.

Year (50 Hours):

  • Clean the air cleaner more frequently in dusty conditions.
  • Change the engine oil (after the first 5 operating hours, then yearly or every 25 operating hours under heavy load/high temperatures).
  • Replace or sharpen the blade.
  • Lubricate wheel gears.
  • Lubricate the upper handle.
  • Check and clean the spark plug.

Annual Storage:

  • Empty the fuel tank before storage.

Detailed Maintenance Procedures:

  • Preparing for Maintenance: Always stop the engine, wait for all parts to stop, and disconnect the spark plug wire before any maintenance. If tipping the mower, allow the fuel tank to run dry or remove fuel with a hand pump, and always tip with the air filter up.
  • Servicing the Air Cleaner: Instructions are provided for accessing, cleaning (by tapping or blowing compressed air, not brushing), and reinstalling the air filter.
  • Changing the Engine Oil: The engine should be run for a few minutes to warm the oil, then tipped on its side (with the air filter up) to drain the old oil. New oil is poured until it reaches the upper limit mark on the dipstick, ensuring not to overfill. Used oil must be disposed of properly.
  • Lubricating the Wheel Gears: This involves removing the rear wheels, applying lubricating oil to the inner and outer sides of the gears, and reinstalling the wheels.
  • Lubricating the Upper Handle: Silicone spray lubricant is applied to the outer plastic end of the inner handle and the inner plastic surface of the outer handle.
  • Adjusting the Self-propel Drive: If the self-propel drive is not working correctly, the cable can be adjusted by loosening a nut, pulling the upper handle rearward, and pulling the cable jacket downward to remove slack. Moving the cable jacket upward decreases ground speed, while moving it downward increases speed.
  • Replacing the Blade: This is a critical safety procedure requiring the engine to be stopped, spark plug disconnected, and the mower tipped. The blade is held steady with a block of wood while removing and installing it. A torque wrench is required to tighten the blade bolt to 60 ft-lb (82 N·m), ensuring the curved ends point toward the mower housing.
  • Cleaning the Mower: The mower can be cleaned by spraying water in front of the right rear wheel while the engine is running on a paved surface. After cleaning, the engine should be run for a few minutes to dry the housing and prevent rust.

Storage:

  • Preparing for Storage: Fuel stabilizer should be added to the fuel for the last refueling of the year, and the mower run until it stops from lack of fuel. The engine should then be primed and run again until it stops. The spark plug wire is disconnected, and 1 oz. (30 ml) of oil is added through the spark plug hole, then the starter rope pulled several times to distribute oil. The spark plug is then loosely installed, and all nuts, bolts, and screws tightened.
  • Removing from Storage: The spark plug is removed, the recoil start handle pulled a few times to blow excess oil, then the spark plug reinstalled and tightened, and the wire reconnected.

Warranty:

The manual includes a "Lawn-Boy No-Worry Warranty," a two-year full warranty for residential use, covering defects in materials or workmanship. For commercial use, there is a limited 45-day warranty. It outlines what is covered (parts and labor, transportation costs excluded) and what is not (regular maintenance, misuse, accidents, unauthorized repairs). Instructions for obtaining warranty service are provided, including contacting an Authorized Service Dealer or Lawn-Boy Customer Care Department.
