Installation
The movement detector has been designed for a harsh climate, complying with the strict IP66 rating and is intended to be used in outdoor
installations, however the detector can be installed indoors.
The detector can be installed on the ceiling surface or on the wall. It must be installed onto the (included) surface mounting block to
maintain IP66 rating. The recommended mounting height of the detector is 2.4m.
The head should be oriented in such a way that the expected traffic is moving across the field of view of the detector and not directly
towards it. Refer to Figure 2.
To change the head orientation, adjust the head position by hand to the desired position. Refer to Figure 3 to see different mounting options.
Add silicon flush caps (provided) to mounting holes to maintain IP66 rating.
If you intend to use multiple sensors on the same circuit ensure sensoring range/area does not overlap.

Overview

The Triscan Weatherproof Movement Sensor, Cat No. 488TRI3W, is a robust and versatile device designed for both outdoor and indoor installations, capable of detecting movement and controlling connected loads based on various environmental conditions. It operates on a 230-240Vac 50Hz supply and must be installed by a licensed electrician.

Function Description:

The sensor utilizes a combination of Passive Infrared (PIR), Microwave, and Photoelectric technologies for active detection, offering a 120° detection angle. Its primary function is to turn on a connected load when a warm body moves within its viewing range. The device can be configured to operate under different light conditions (e.g., night only or day and night) and offers adjustable range sensitivity, time delay for the load, and light sensitivity. It also features a normally open contact status.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Supply Voltage: 230-240V a.c. 50Hz
  • Min. Load: 0VA
  • Max. Load: 2400W Incandescent, 2400VA Fluorescent, 1200VA LED
  • Operating Temperature: 0°C to 40°C
  • Mounting Height: 1.8 to 2.4m (recommended 2.4m)
  • Weatherproof Rating: IP66
  • Standby Power: 0.5W
  • PIR Detection Angle: 120°
  • Contact Status: Normally Open
  • Range Sensitivity Adjustment: 1m to 18m
  • Light Sensitivity Adjustment: 10 Lux to Full Sun
  • Timer Adjustment: 8 seconds to 15 minutes
  • Active Detection: PIR, Microwave and Photoelectric
  • Head Swivel: 120°

Usage Features:

  • Installation Flexibility: Can be installed on ceiling surfaces or walls, but must use the included surface mounting block to maintain its IP66 rating.
  • Adjustable Head: The sensor head can be manually adjusted by 120° to orient the detection field, ensuring optimal coverage for expected traffic patterns.
  • Walk Test Functionality: Before commissioning, a "Walk test" can be performed by setting sensitivity and Lux knobs to fully clockwise and the Time knob to fully anti-clockwise. This allows users to verify the sensor's detection range and ensure proper operation.
  • Range Sensitivity Control: The range sensitivity knob allows adjustment to react to different levels of movement and distances. At its most sensitive, it can detect small children or animals at full distance, while at its least sensitive, it may require a large person at a close distance.
  • Light Sensitivity Control: The Lux adjustment knob determines the ambient light level at which the detector starts operating the load. This allows for operation during night only or day and night, balancing energy savings and convenience. A screwdriver is recommended for adjustment.
  • Timer Adjustment: The timer knob allows users to set the duration the load remains on, from 8 seconds to 15 minutes. Rotating the knob anti-clockwise reduces the 'ON' duration.
  • Remote Control Options: The device supports various connection and configuration options for remote control of its operation, including Auto, Auto & ON override, Auto & OFF override, and Auto & ON & OFF switch configurations using specific Legrand switches (e.g., CAT EM770, CAT 770RS180M, CAT EMRS). All wiring for such circuits must be done by a licensed electrician.
  • Parallel Wiring: Multiple sensors can be wired in parallel, though it is advised to ensure sensing ranges do not overlap to prevent unwanted operation.
  • IP66 Rating: Designed for harsh climates and suitable for fully exposed external installations and areas subject to hose down. The IP rating is valid when installed on flat, non-porous surfaces, and silicon flush caps are provided for mounting holes to maintain this rating.

Maintenance Features:

  • Troubleshooting Guide: The manual provides a comprehensive troubleshooting section to address common issues such as the light not switching on, false triggers, light remaining on, and issues with daylight operation or detection distance.
  • Problem-Solving Suggestions: For each problem, possible causes and suggested solutions are provided, ranging from checking connections and bulbs to redirecting the sensor, adjusting settings, or addressing external interferences.
  • Minimizing False Triggers: Recommendations include ensuring a minimum 40mm gap between the lamp body and sensor head, directing the sensor away from heat sources (e.g., air-con, barbecues), and considering solutions for electrical interference (e.g., checking for arcing faults, replacing noisy fluorescent tubes, or connecting the sensor to a separate circuit).
  • Environmental Considerations: Users are advised to carefully place the detector, taking into account surrounding objects that might cause false operation, such as passing cars, waves in a swimming pool, or moving tree branches. The range of movement detection is also influenced by external conditions like ambient temperature, body temperature, clothing, and speed of movement.
  • Durability: The product is designed to operate in ambient temperatures of 0°C to 40°C. However, extended exposure to UV rays (direct sunlight) may cause discolouration.
  • No Serviceable Parts: The product contains no serviceable parts, and no attempt should be made to repair it. If faulty, it should be discarded.
  • Installation Integrity: Fixing screws should be tightened to a maximum torque of 0.8Nm to prevent damage and maintain the IP66 rating. Additional sealing may be required for irregular surfaces.
