Overview

The Leica APO-Summicron-SL 1:2/50 ASPH. is a high-speed standard lens designed for Leica SL and TL camera systems, offering outstanding rendering capacity. This manual provides essential information for familiarizing users with the lens's full scope of functions.

Function Description

The lens is designed for both autofocus and manual focusing. In autofocus mode, the camera automatically sets the sharpness. In manual mode, the user turns the focus ring to adjust sharpness, with the speed of rotation determining the rate of change. This allows for both fine adjustments and quick transitions between close-up and long-range settings.

The lens does not feature a depth of field scale. Instead, the camera's top display shows the near and far focal length limits of the depth of field alongside the set distance.

The APO-Summicron-SL 50 f/2 ASPH. comes with a lens hood optimally adapted to the beam paths. The symmetrical bayonet fitting allows the lens hood to be attached in reverse for more compact storage. To attach the lens hood, align one of the alignment points on the lens hood (1a) with the alignment point on the front mount of the lens (2b), then turn it clockwise by approximately 30° until it audibly clicks into place. The lens hood should remain attached during use or when the camera is ready for use, as it effectively eliminates contrast-reducing stray light and protects the front lens from damage and soiling.

Data exchange between the camera and lens, including control commands for autofocus and aperture, is facilitated via a contact strip in the bayonet.

Maintenance Features

  • Disposal of Electrical and Electronic Equipment: This device contains electrical and/or electronic components that must not be disposed of with general household waste. It should be disposed of at a recycling collection point provided by your local authority. Any standard or rechargeable batteries must be removed and disposed of separately according to local regulations.
  • Safety Remark: A camera lens can act as a magnifying glass when exposed to direct frontal sunlight. Always protect the camera from extended direct sunlight by using the lens cap and keeping the camera in the shade (ideally in its camera case) to prevent damage to the interior.
  • General Notes:
    • Record the serial numbers of your camera and lenses, as this information is crucial in case of loss.
    • Always keep a lens or the camera bayonet cover attached to prevent dust or foreign bodies from entering the camera.
    • Replace lenses quickly and in a dust-free environment.
    • Never store the camera bayonet cover or the lens back cover in a pants pocket, as they can attract lint and dust, which might then be introduced into the camera.
    • Leica releases firmware updates for lenses periodically. New firmware versions can be downloaded from the Leica homepage and transferred to your lens.
