The Leupold PinCaddie 3 Digital Laser Rangefinder is a sophisticated optical instrument designed for golf and other outdoor activities requiring precise distance measurement. This device integrates advanced digital electronics into a 6x20mm monocular, offering users a reliable and accurate way to determine distances to various targets.
At its core, the PinCaddie 3 functions as a laser rangefinder. It emits a series of invisible, infrared energy pulses that travel to a selected target and reflect back to the optical unit. State-of-the-art circuitry and precision computing circuits then measure the time it takes for these pulses to complete the round trip, accurately calculating the distance to the object. This process allows for precise measurements to the pin from 5 to 300 yards, to inanimate objects from 5 to 600 yards, and to reflective targets from 5 to 650 yards.
A key feature of the PinCaddie 3 is its Flag Lock Technology. This intelligent system is always active and designed to identify the pin amidst surrounding obstacles like trees and bushes. By calculating multiple ranges, it accurately locates and locks onto the pin on the first attempt. When the rangefinder locks onto the pin, the reticle corners illuminate, and the display locks, providing a clear indication that the measurement is to the flag, not a background object. While the display may update if a closer target is found, this only occurs if the obstacles behind the flag match the same smart algorithm used to identify the flag, ensuring consistent accuracy. This technology eliminates guesswork, guaranteeing an accurate range to the pin every time.
The device is powered by a 3V Lithium CR2 battery, chosen for its reliability and long life, offering at least 5,000 actuations. It also incorporates an auto power-off feature after 5 seconds of inactivity to conserve battery life. The PinCaddie 3 is designed to be waterproof, ensuring durability and performance in various weather conditions.
Operating the PinCaddie 3 is straightforward. To measure distance, the user first views the object of interest through the monocular. Depressing the POWER button powers up the unit, and the user then aligns the reticle over the target. A second press of the POWER button activates the laser, and the measured distance is displayed in the image field.
For continuous measurement or ranging multiple objects, the PinCaddie 3 offers a Scan Mode. After an initial measurement, the user can continue to hold down the POWER button and sweep the reticle across different objects. The distance display will automatically update as long as the POWER button remains depressed, allowing for dynamic ranging of multiple targets without needing to reactivate the laser for each new object.
The device includes a battery power status indicator to keep users informed about the remaining charge. When the battery is full or half-full, a corresponding indicator is shown. If the battery bar is empty and no data is displayed, the battery needs replacement. A flashing battery status bar indicates critically low power before the unit shuts down.
The PinCaddie 3 allows users to select their preferred unit of measure: yards or meters. To switch between these units, the user powers off the device, then presses and holds the POWER button for approximately 10 seconds. The unit of measure will toggle, and the change will be confirmed. The reticle will not be displayed during this unit selection process.
To ensure a clear view, the rangefinder features an adjustable eyepiece for focusing. Users can turn the eyepiece left or right until a crisp focus is achieved, with an audible click indicating a change in diopter setting. For added security and ease of carrying, the PinCaddie 3 is equipped with a lanyard attachment.
Safety is paramount in the design of the PinCaddie 3. It employs an eye-safe FDA Class 1 and IEC Class 3R laser. Users are advised not to depress the POWER button while aiming at a human eye or looking into the optics from the objective side. The unit produces an audible click when activated, signaling that the invisible laser is emitting. The device is designed to prohibit access to any external power supply, requiring only a 3V Lithium CR2 battery. Users are cautioned against disassembling the product, as it contains a self-protection device in the electronic control module, and tampering could result in an electric shock.
Maintaining the PinCaddie 3 involves simple cleaning procedures to ensure optimal performance. For routine cleaning, dust and debris on the lenses can be removed by blowing them away or using a soft lens brush, such as those found in a Leupold LensPen. For more stubborn dirt, fingerprints, or water spots, a soft cotton cloth or the cleaning end of a Leupold LensPen should be used. If necessary, a lens tissue with lens cleaning fluid can be applied to the cleaning cloth (never directly to the lens) for more persistent grime.
The battery compartment is easily accessible for replacement. To insert a new battery, the battery cover is removed, the exhausted battery is taken out, and a new CR-2 battery is inserted negative terminal first, then the cover is closed.
The Leupold Electronics Warranty covers any defects in materials and workmanship for two years from the date of purchase, applying to the electronic components of GX and PinCaddie Rangefinders, Leupold Thermal Optics, and other Leupold electronic products.
