Overview

This document is a user manual for Lewmar Electric/Hydraulic Stern Thrusters, specifically models 140TT, 185TT, 250TT, and 300TT. It provides comprehensive instructions for installation, operation, and basic servicing of these marine propulsion devices.

Function Description

Lewmar Stern Thrusters are designed to provide lateral thrust to a vessel, aiding in maneuvering, docking, and precise control in confined spaces. They achieve this by generating a powerful suction of water, which is then expelled to create thrust. The thrusters can be either electrically or hydraulically powered, offering flexibility in integration with a vessel's existing systems. The manual emphasizes that these devices are crucial for enhancing a boat's maneuverability, particularly in situations where traditional propulsion might be insufficient.

Important Technical Specifications

The manual covers several key technical aspects relevant to the thrusters:

  • Models Covered: 140TT, 185TT, 250TT, and 300TT, indicating a range of thrust capabilities suitable for different vessel sizes.
  • Installation Requirements:
    • Watertight Enclosure: The thruster must be housed in a watertight enclosure, positioned a minimum of 150 mm (6 inches) above the waterline, with adequate ventilation and access from above. Drainage ducts must be sealed and routed around the enclosure to prevent water ingress.
    • Tunnel Installation: The tunnel, which houses the propeller, should be installed by a specialist, particularly for GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) hulls. The manual's instructions are based on GRP tunnel installations.
    • Location: For optimal performance, the thruster unit should be mounted at least 10 mm below the waterline to prevent air from being sucked into the tunnel. The chosen area must be flat and free from mechanical, electrical, or bulkhead obstructions.
    • Hull Work: Any work on the hull, including drilling and cutting holes for the stern tube, must be carried out by a competent marine engineer.
    • Materials: Lewmar stern tubes are constructed from polyester resin and glass fiber with a white gel coat.
    • Propeller Nut Torque: The prop nut should be tightened to 10Nm (7.4lbs.ft) for the 140TT model and 15Nm (11lbs.ft) for the 185TT model.
    • Hub/Saddle Bolts Torque: Hub/saddle bolts should be tightened to 7Nm (x.xlbs.ft) for the 140TT and 21Nm (15.5lbs.ft) for the 185TT.
    • Bolt Specifications: For final assembly, A4 Stainless Steel bolts of property class 70 or greater are specified: M8 (5/16") for 140TT, and M10 (3/8") for 185TT, 250TT, and 300TT.
    • Electrical System: Electric bow thrusters require sufficient battery capacity and large enough cables for safe operation. Undersized batteries or cables can lead to performance loss and dangerous overheating. The electric motors spark and run hot, so they must not be placed near flammable or sealed areas. Main battery connections should only be made after all covers and terminal protectors are correctly fitted.
    • Motor Support: The electric motor must be supported horizontally during installation.
    • Power Cable Entry: All power cables must enter the sealed installed area at a high point to avoid water ingress.

Usage Features

The manual outlines several key aspects related to the safe and effective use of the thrusters:

  • Operator Competence: Only persons completely familiar with the controls and correct use of the thruster should be allowed to operate it.
  • Safety Precautions:
    • Swimmers: The thruster should never be operated near swimmers due to the powerful suction generated.
    • Out of Water Operation: It is extremely dangerous to run the thruster out of the water, even for a few seconds, as this can cause the motor to overspeed by 300%, leading to damage to seals, the propeller, and invalidating the warranty.
    • Flammable Areas: Electric motors generate sparks and heat, so they should not be placed near flammable or sealed areas.
  • Control Options: Users are directed to the main thruster manual for detailed information on control options.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and safe operation of the Lewmar Stern Thrusters. The manual specifies annual service tasks:

  • Debris Removal: Remove any debris from the tunnel, propeller, and hub, as stern thrusters are prone to attracting debris.
  • Anode Replacement: Replace the anode annually.
  • Propeller Inspection: If the propeller is damaged or heavily contaminated, it should be replaced for safety.
  • Motor Inspection: Inspect the motor to ensure all leads are tight.
  • Bolt and Nut Check: Verify that all bolts and nuts are tightened to the correct torque.
  • Motor Assembly Dryness: Ensure the motor assembly is dry and that the compartment is watertight.
  • Stern Tube Inspection: Check the stern tube for cracks or damage.
  • Compartment Cleaning: Clean out the thruster compartment.

Safety Notices and General Information

The manual places a strong emphasis on safety, with dedicated sections for general safety, fitting, and electrical safety notices. It highlights the importance of reading and understanding all warnings to prevent injury or damage. The document also includes information on product support, EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) recommended guidelines, and CE Approvals, ensuring compliance with relevant standards. Lewmar's limited warranty is detailed, outlining conditions, limitations, and procedures for claims. The warranty specifies a three-year period for most products, but a one-year period for electric motors, associated electrical equipment, electronic controls, hydraulic pumps, valves, actuators, weather seals, and products used in "Grand Prix" racing applications.
