Overview

The Lewmar TT Electric Thruster 110-140TT 2.0 is a marine propulsion device designed to assist in maneuvering boats, particularly in tight spaces. This manual provides comprehensive instructions for its installation, operation, and servicing, ensuring safe and optimal performance.

Function Description:

The thruster operates by creating a powerful suction of water, allowing the vessel to move laterally (port or starboard) without relying on the main engine. It is controlled via a joystick or a two-direction switch, enabling precise control during docking, undocking, or navigating confined areas. The electric motor drives a propeller within a tunnel, generating thrust in the desired direction. The system incorporates safety features such as a thermal switch to prevent overheating during prolonged operation and requires a suitably sized battery switch for safe installation and use.

Usage Features:

  • Installation Flexibility: The thruster can be installed at any angle within 90° from vertical. If installed more than 30° from vertical, the electric motor must be supported.
  • Optimal Performance: For best results, the thruster should be mounted as far forward as possible and at least 0.75 times the tunnel diameter below the waterline to prevent air suction. The minimum suggested tunnel length is 2 times the tunnel diameter.
  • Control Panel Operation: The control panel is activated by pressing and releasing the ON/OFF button, which illuminates an LED. Moving the joystick in the desired direction operates the thruster. Pressing the ON/OFF button again turns the panel off.
  • Safety Warnings:
    • Do not operate the thruster near swimmers due to powerful water suction.
    • Avoid frequent rapid movements of the joystick from port to starboard, as this can damage the electric motor.
    • Ensure the boat is out of water, leveled, and secure for hull work.
    • Never run the thruster out of water, as this can cause severe damage and invalidate the warranty.
    • Always switch off power before installing electrical equipment.
    • Electric motors spark and run hot; do not place near flammable or sealed areas.
    • Main battery must not be connected and power must not be switched on until all covers and terminal protectors are correctly fitted.
    • The thruster must not be operated unless it is in water.
    • Do not attempt to cool the motor by any other means if the thermal switch trips.
    • Do not continue to run the thruster if the motor turns but there is no drive, as this indicates a broken shear pin or propeller blades.

Maintenance Features:

  • Annual Service Schedule:
    • Remove any debris from the tunnel, propeller, and hub.
    • Replace damaged or heavily contaminated propellers.
    • Apply grease to exposed thruster seal and shaft.
    • Replace the tunnel gasket if the hub is removed.
    • Inspect the motor, ensuring all leads are tight.
    • Check all bolts and nuts for correct torque.
    • Ensure the motor assembly is dry and the compartment is watertight.
    • Clean out the thruster compartment.
    • For electric motors, inspect and ensure all leads are tight.
    • Brush out carbon dust from the top of the electric motor, especially on aluminum boats.
  • Drive Pin Replacement: Instructions are provided for cutting the cable tie, punching out old pin parts, and tapping in a new pin with a new plastic cable tie.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: A comprehensive fault-finding section covers common issues such as thrust in the wrong direction, fuse blowing, control panel not illuminating, control panel illuminating but no thrust, poor thrust, motor turning but no drive, and noisy/vibrating thruster. This section provides checks and solutions for each problem.
  • Electrolytic Test: Instructions for checking electrolytic corrosion or faults using a multimeter to ensure the thruster motor body and assembly remain isolated from any power supply or grounds.
  • Propeller Assembly Check: Ensure the propeller is assembled in the correct order, centered, and free-turning. Do not allow the propeller to touch the tunnel.
  • Antifouling: Propeller can be antifouled if desired.

The manual emphasizes the importance of professional installation and adherence to safety guidelines to ensure the longevity and safe operation of the Lewmar TT Electric Thruster.
