OUTRIGGER OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE
Standard on CONQUEST ALL-TERRAIN
models, the
outriggers provide additional width at the base of the

allowing the ladder to be used safely in unlevel areas. The
outriggers have a pressure sensitive safety mechanism,
which doesn’t allow them to be released if someone is on
the ladder.

Outrigger Operation:
1. To unlock, lift or tilt the

any pressure on the foot of
the side you’re adjusting.
2. Squeeze the release with your
fingers. Then, while holding the
release in the unlocked position,
press down the lock housing and
nudge the ladder foot outward.
3. When you get the outrigger to the desired
position, let go of the release and move the
housing slightly until you feel it lock into
place. Even when used on level ground,
both outriggers should be extended to the
first locking position below the storage
position for additional stability.
4. To avoid injuries caused by misstepping as you dismount the ladder, it is highly recommended
that the outriggers are used for leveling only, and not for gaining additional height. Try to keep the
bottom rung height approximately 12" from the ground. Never fully extend both outriggers at the

Overview

The Little Giant Conquest All-Terrain ladder system features integrated outriggers designed to enhance stability and provide leveling capabilities on uneven surfaces. These outriggers are standard on Conquest All-Terrain models and function as built-in levelers, allowing the ladder to be used safely in various environments. A key safety feature is a pressure-sensitive mechanism that prevents the outriggers from being released if someone is on the ladder, ensuring user safety.

Outrigger Operation:

To adjust the outriggers, users must first lift or tilt the ladder slightly to remove any pressure from the foot of the side being adjusted. This action unlocks the outrigger. Next, the user squeezes the release with their fingers. While holding the release in the unlocked position, they press down on the lock housing and nudge the ladder foot outward to extend the outrigger. Once the outrigger reaches the desired position, the user releases the mechanism and moves the housing slightly until it locks into place. It is crucial to ensure the locking pin is fully engaged before each use to prevent accidental retraction. Even on level ground, both outriggers should be extended to at least the first locking position below the storage position for enhanced stability. The manual explicitly states, "NEVER USE LADDER WITHOUT OUTRIGGERS DEPLOYED."

Safety Recommendations and Advised Use Positions:

The manual provides clear guidelines for safe outrigger use. To prevent injuries from misstepping when dismounting, it is highly recommended that outriggers are used primarily for leveling and not for gaining additional height. Users should aim to keep the bottom rung approximately 12 inches (30 cm) from the ground. It is also advised never to fully extend both outriggers simultaneously. When leveling the ladder, one outrigger should be set in the 1st Use Position, and the other extended until the ladder is level side-to-side. The manual illustrates "Advised Use Positions" with green checkmarks, showing configurations where the outriggers are extended for stability and leveling. Conversely, "Non-Use Positions" are marked with red 'X's, indicating unsafe configurations, such as having the bottom rung too high (e.g., >12" [30 cm]) or outriggers not properly deployed. The manual sternly warns, "Use ladder only in advised positions shown. Use in any other position may result in death or serious injury."

Important Warnings:

Several critical warnings are highlighted to prevent serious injury or death:

  • Never adjust the outriggers while on the ladder.
  • Never adjust the outriggers if anyone else is on the ladder.
  • Always ensure the ladder is level side-to-side before climbing.
  • Never release the outriggers if someone is on the ladder.
  • Never use the ladder without outriggers deployed.
  • Always ensure the locking pins are fully engaged before each use.
  • To avoid missteps, keep the bottom rung approximately 12 inches (30 cm) from the ground.

Maintenance Features:

To ensure the outriggers operate smoothly, regular maintenance is required. The manual recommends lubricating them with a dry lubricant at least every six months, and prior to long-term storage, or more frequently depending on usage and extreme weather conditions. The lubrication process can be performed with the ladder in storage mode or an A-frame configuration.

  1. Extend the outrigger as shown in figure 1 of the manual.
  2. Using only a dry lubricant, spray inside the small center hole shown in figure 2.
  3. Extend and retract the outrigger a couple of times, allowing the lubricant to coat the handle evenly. Recommended dry lubricants include DuPont, Tri-Flow, and B'Laster.

Technical Specifications (Implicit):

While specific numerical technical specifications like weight capacity or material composition are not explicitly detailed in the provided text, the description implies robust construction suitable for all-terrain use. The outriggers provide "additional width at the base of the ladder for added stability," suggesting a design focused on maximizing the ladder's footprint for safety. The pressure-sensitive safety mechanism is a key technical feature, preventing accidental release when under load. The requirement for the bottom rung to be approximately 12 inches (30 cm) from the ground for safe dismounting is a critical operational parameter.
