While underway, CO concentrations can increase by backdrafting or “the station
wagon effect.” Backdrafting is caused by factors such as relative wind direction,
speed, or the bow being too high. To prevent this, open canvas whenever possible
to provide positive airflow through the hull, or increase boat speed to increase
ventilation.
Under certain conditions, moving air currents can direct poison-
ous carbon monoxide fumes into boat (Figure 2-7). These fumes can accumulate
to dangerous levels without proper airflow. Provide adequate ventilation, redis-
tribute the load or bring boat out of high bow angle.
! Hull exhaust from your boat can cause excessive accumulation
of poisonous carbon monoxide gas within cockpit area when using protective
weather coverings while underway (Figure 2-7) or while stationary. Provide
adequate ventilation when the canvas top, side curtains, and/or back curtains are
in their closed protective positions.
