Overview

This document describes the Mac Allister MLMP450HP40 Petrol Lawnmower, a 125 cc, 1.7 kW hand-push lawnmower designed for domestic garden use. It is intended for mowing grass and not for unusually high, dry, or wet grass, shredding leaves, or mulching. For safety, it is crucial to read the entire instruction manual before operation.

Function Description

The MLMP450HP40 is a petrol-powered lawnmower designed for cutting grass in domestic gardens. It features a cutting device (blade) that rotates to cut grass, a grass catcher for collecting clippings, and a mulching insert for returning finely cut grass to the lawn. The engine is started using a recoil starter handle, and operation is controlled via a brake bar.

Brake Bar (2): This bar must be pulled towards the handle (1) and held in position to start and operate the engine. Releasing the brake bar stops the engine and the cutting device automatically within a few seconds. Regular checks are required to ensure the brake bar and its wire (4) operate smoothly.

Recoil Starter: The recoil starter handle (22) is located at the rear of the engine. To start, the brake bar (2) is pulled, and the recoil starter handle is pulled rapidly until the engine starts. It should be allowed to return slowly and in a controlled manner.

Grass Catcher (20): The product is equipped with a grass catcher to collect clippings. It has an indicator (20b) that shows the volume. When the hatch (20b) is open, there is enough space; when closed, the catcher is full and needs emptying. The grass catcher is attached to the rear discharge chute (24).

Mulching Insert (27): For mulching, the mulching insert is inserted into the rear discharge chute (24), with the unlock button (27a) snapping into place. Mulching involves cutting grass clippings very fine and distributing them back onto the lawn as nutrients.

Cutting Height Adjustment: The cutting height can be adjusted between 25-75 mm using a lever (16) that is pulled towards the wheel (13) and then moved forward or backward. It is important to ensure the lever engages between two prongs.

Primer (10): Located on the air filter case (11), the primer is used to start the product when the engine is cold. It should be pressed three to five times before starting.

Usage Features

Assembly: The product must be fully assembled before operation. This involves unfolding the handle bars (3, 5), fixing them with locking knobs (6a) and mounting sets (18), and attaching the grass catcher (20). The spark plug connector (12) must be disconnected during assembly and reconnected afterwards.

Fuel and Engine Oil: The product is equipped with a 4-stroke engine and requires proper fuel and engine oil to be added separately before operation. Petrol is highly flammable, and refuelling should be done outdoors without smoking. The fuel tank should not be overfilled. Engine oil level must be checked frequently using the dipstick, and good-quality engine oil should be used.

Operation:

  • Always operate the engine in a well-ventilated space to avoid carbon monoxide fumes.
  • Mow only in daylight or good artificial light.
  • Avoid operating when tired, ill, or under the influence of alcohol/drugs.
  • Avoid wet grass, which can cause clippings to stick and lead to slipping.
  • Maintain sure footing on slopes; mow across slopes, not up and down.
  • Do not mow excessively steep slopes or near drop-offs.
  • Use extreme caution when reversing or pulling the product towards you.
  • Stop the cutting device when tilting for transport or crossing non-grass surfaces.
  • Never operate without defective guards or safety devices (deflectors, grass catchers).
  • Do not change engine governor settings or overspeed the engine.
  • Start the engine with feet well away from the cutting device(s).
  • Do not tilt the product when starting, unless necessary for starting, and then only lift the part away from the operator.
  • Keep hands and feet clear of rotating parts and the discharge opening.
  • Stop the engine and disconnect the spark plug connector before clearing blockages, checking, cleaning, or working on the product, after striking a foreign object, or if abnormal vibration occurs.
  • Reduce throttle setting during shutdown and turn off fuel if a shut-off valve is present.
  • Never touch hot surfaces like the exhaust pipe or engine.
  • Ensure the air intake is clear of dust, dirt, gases, and fumes.

Mowing:

  • Clear the lawn of stones, sticks, wire, and other objects.
  • Do not cut more than one-third of the grass length for a healthy lawn.
  • Push the product slowly forward; the self-propelled function can be used for assistance.
  • Mow in slight overlapping rows, preferably straight lines.
  • Circle around flower beds.
  • Empty the grass catcher regularly.
  • If extensive vibration occurs, switch off the engine and inspect for damage.

Maintenance Features

General Cleaning:

  • Clean the product with a damp cloth and mild soap after each use.
  • Clean air vents (9) after every use.
  • Remove stubborn dirt with high-pressure air (max. 3 bar).
  • Do not use chemical, alkaline, abrasive, or aggressive detergents.
  • Inspect for worn or damaged parts before each use and replace as necessary.

Underbody and Cutting Device (23):

  • Wear protective gloves when working near the cutting device.
  • Use proper tools (e.g., a wooden stick) to remove debris; never use bare hands.
  • Only use original spare parts for replacement; the cutting device must be replaced with identification no. DAYE 26300100401.
  • Replacement of the cutting device should be done by an experienced user.
  • Rework or sharpening blades is not recommended unless done by a repair service.
  • Jack up the product for inspection/work on the cutting device to prevent fuel and oil leakages.
  • Keep the underbody and cutting device clean and free of debris.
  • Check all nuts and bolts periodically for tightness.
  • Replace worn or damaged cutting devices with new ones of the same type or have them sharpened by a qualified specialist.
  • To replace the cutting device, loosen the hex bolt (23f) anti-clockwise, remove the locking flange (23e), cutting device (23), support (23d), ring (23c), and pin (23b). Slide the new pin (23b) into the spindle (23a) slot, then refit the other parts and tighten the hex bolt clockwise with 40 N·m min, 50 N·m max.
  • Lubricate the cutting device with light machine oil after each use.
  • Replace the cutting device after 50 hours of mowing or 2 years, whichever comes sooner, regardless of condition.

Grass Catcher (20):

  • Inspect before each use for damage.
  • Clean with water and mild soap after operation.
  • Let it dry thoroughly before storing to avoid mildew.

Wires (4):

  • Check performance before each use.

Users are advised to perform only the steps described in the manual; further repairs should be done by an authorised service centre.

Recycling and Disposal: Old products, petrol, oil, and oil-contaminated items should be disposed of at equipped collection centres or recycling centres, not in household rubbish. Packaging should also be recycled.

Guarantee: The product carries a 24-month guarantee from the date of purchase, excluding normal wear and tear, overload, misuse, neglect, consumable items, unauthorised repairs, accidental damage, lack of routine maintenance, failure to follow guidelines, and loss of use.
