23 Maintenance Procedures
23.16 Replace Engine Oil and Oil Filter
Always change the oil filter whenever changing oil.
Maintenance Interval – Replace every 50 hours, 6 months, 1,500
miles (2,500 Km)
Fluid Spec. – API CJ-4 5W/40 (Full Synthetic)
Capacity – 7.4 Quarts (7.0 Liters)
1. Position the vehicle on a flat level surface.
2. Run the engine for two to three minutes until warm.
3. Stop the engine, place the gear selector in gear and set the park-
ing brake.
4. Clean the area around the drain plug. (see Figure 23)
5. Place a drain pan beneath the engine crankcase.
Contact with hot oil can result in skin burns. Do not
allow hot oil to contact skin.
6. Remove the drain plug. Allow the oil to drain completely.
7. Verify the sealing washer is on the drain plug. The sealing sur-
faces on drain plug and crankcase should be clean and free of
burrs, nicks or scratches.
8. Reinstall the drain plug. Torque between 30-40 Nm.
9. Place shop towels beneath the oil filter. Using an oil filter
wrench, turn the filter counterclockwise to remove it. (see Figure
24)
10. Using a clean dry cloth, clean the filter sealing surface on the
crankcase. And verify the old o-ring is not stuck to the engine
block.
11. Lubricate the o-ring on the new filter with a film of fresh engine
oil. Check to make sure the o-ring is in good condition.
12. Install the new filter and turn by hand until the filter gasket con-
tacts the sealing surface, then turn an additional 1/2 turn.
13. Unlatch and lift the hood, then place prop rod.
14. Remove the oil fill cap and add up to 7.4 Quarts (7.0 Liters) of
the recommended oil.
15. Reinstall the oil fill cap.
16. Start the engine and check for leaks.
17. Stop the engine and wait for 15 seconds before removing the dip-
stick. Remove the dipstick. Wipe it dry with a clean cloth.
18. Reinstall the dipstick completely. Remove the dipstick and check
the oil level.
19. Remove the oil fill cap and add oil as needed to bring the level to
the upper mark on the dipstick. Do not overfill.
20. Reinstall the fill cap. Reinstall the dipstick.
21. Dispose of used filter and oil properly.
