This document is an instruction manual for the Makita Model 6408 Drill, a 10 mm (3/8") drill with double insulation.
Function Description
The Makita Model 6408 is a drill designed for various drilling operations, primarily in wood and metal. It features a switch trigger for starting and stopping the tool, with variable speed control based on trigger pressure. Usage Features
General Safety Rules:
The manual emphasizes reading and understanding all instructions to prevent electric shock, fire, and serious personal injury. Key safety points include:
- Work Area: Keep the work area clean, well-lit, and free of bystanders, children, and visitors. Avoid operating in explosive atmospheres.
- Electrical Safety: Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Avoid body contact with grounded surfaces. Use polarized plugs correctly and do not modify them. For outdoor use, use outdoor-rated extension cords.
- Personal Safety: Stay alert, use common sense, and do not operate the tool while tired or under the influence. Dress properly, avoiding loose clothing or jewelry, and contain long hair. Always wear eye protection and other appropriate safety equipment like dust masks, non-skid safety shoes, and hearing protection. Remove adjusting keys or wrenches before turning the tool on. Maintain proper footing and balance.
- Tool Use and Care: Use clamps or other practical ways to secure workpieces. Do not force the tool; use the correct tool for the application. Do not use a tool if the switch does not turn it on or off. Disconnect the plug from the power source before making adjustments, changing accessories, or storing the tool. Store idle tools out of reach of children. Maintain tools with care, keeping cutting tools sharp and clean. Check for misalignment, binding, or breakage of parts, and have damaged tools serviced. Use only manufacturer-recommended accessories.
Specific Safety Rules for Drills:
- Hold the tool by insulated gripping surfaces when cutting tools may contact hidden wiring or the tool's own cord to prevent electric shock.
- Always ensure firm footing, especially when working at high locations.
- Hold the tool firmly.
- Keep hands away from rotating parts.
- Do not leave the tool running unattended; operate it only when hand-held.
- Avoid touching the drill bit or workpiece immediately after operation as they can be extremely hot.
- Be cautious of materials containing toxic chemicals; prevent dust inhalation and skin contact by following material supplier safety data.
Installing or Removing Drill Bit:
To install a drill bit, hold the ring and turn the sleeve counterclockwise to open the chuck jaws. Insert the bit as far as it will go, then hold the ring firmly and turn the sleeve clockwise to tighten the chuck. To remove, hold the ring and turn the sleeve counterclockwise.
Drilling Operation:
- Drilling in wood: Use wood drills with a guide screw for best results, as it pulls the bit into the workpiece.
- Drilling in metal: Make an indentation with a center-punch and hammer at the drilling point to prevent the bit from slipping. Use a cutting lubricant for metals, except for iron and brass which should be drilled dry.
- Cautions during drilling:
- Excessive pressure will not speed up drilling and can damage the bit, decrease performance, and shorten tool life.
- Be aware of the tremendous twisting force during hole breakthrough; hold the tool firmly.
- A stuck bit can be removed by setting the reversing switch to reverse rotation, but hold the tool firmly as it may back out abruptly.
- Secure small workpieces with a vise or similar device.
- Avoid drilling into materials suspected of containing hidden nails or other objects that could bind or break the bit.
