Instructions for Marantz PMD661 for Una Interviewers 2018 v1.1 17.04.2018
2
Always check the display reads as follows:
REC SETUP (Preset-1)
MIC Mono
PCM-24
24bit 48kHz
Note especially: MIC and not ‘INT MIC’ which selects the low quality internal
microphones. If the settings differ from the ones above consult the manual (pp.39-47)
and reset using the Menu function.
Getting started - recording
Without switching on insert the SD memory card into the slot on the left hand
side of the recorder - you have to open a protective cover that opens down from
the top - it’s a bit stiff so take care. Push it in until it clicks gently. To remove the
card push it in and it will pop out. These cards are very fragile so great care is
needed with them when they are outside the recorder.
Plug in AC power lead on left hand side (lhs).
Switch on Power (rhs). If you insert a card after you have powered up you might
need to switch the power off and on again.
Next, check the amount of space on the card for recording. The LCD screen on
the top of the PMD shows recording time remaining (eg 03:51:55), and below
that, the track number. If you are using a new or reformatted (ie empty) 4GB SD
card, ensure that the REMAIN time is about three hours and 50 minutes. The
exact values might vary from one card to another. If the REMAIN time does not
show, press the Display button several times to toggle through the information
displayed.
Plug one end of the XLR connector lead into the back of the PMD661 and the
other into the small black box attached to the microphone cable. Check the
'Phantom power’ switch (marked P48) at the back of the PMD660 is in theMIC
ON’ (left hand) setting. If the microphone also has an ‘on/off’ switch, ensure that
it is also switched on.
Set up the shotgun mic on a table or similar close to the interviewee using the
nifty portable stand provided, and in a place where it will not move about.
Alternatively, you can hold the mic in your hand pointed in the direction of the
interviewee but make sure this is comfortable as you will be sitting for quite a
while. Either way, you will need to test the levels before you get started.
If you have your own lapel mic(s), make sure that the microphones are clipped
securely on yourself and your interviewee well away from any clothing or
jewellery. Think carefully about the mike positioning because if it rubs on
clothing it can record a rustly, scratchy sound. Most lapel mikes are quite robust,
so the tie-clip can easily be removed and switched it round to ensure the mike is
not touching anything.
