Instructions for Marantz PMD661 for Una Interviewers 2018 v1.1 17.04.2018
3
When you are recording you need to turn off the PMD's own playback speaker.
Turn the HP/SPK VOL dial located on the front of the recorder to the left (off). If
you forget to do this you will soon know because there is a terrible squeal.
Press the REC PAUSE button to enter record mode in pause (the record ‘blob’
will flash) so you can set your levels before the actual recording begins.
The record volume lights at the front of the PMD will light up. The top set is the
left microphone; the bottom set the right microphone. They should be bouncing
merrily as you talk from left (quiet) to right (loud). If the lights flash past the “0
level, where they are red, the recording is overloaded. The lights should fluctuate
into the green or orange but never into the red area ‘OVER’. To be on the safe
side, and as the loudness of the interview may vary considerably, the green lights
should flash regularly, but only occasionally in the orange area.
Use the REC LEVEL dial (front right) to adjust the microphone levels. There are
two small wheels: one for each microphone. These are a bit fiddly, and can be
used together or separately (for example if one person is more faint). Adjust so
each set of the record volume lights stretch well into the green but not the red.
Once you are happy with the levels press the red REC button to start recording:
you will start to see the time elapsing for the current track (change the display if
you can’t see this).
If you need to pause momentarily use the REC PAUSE button to pause recording,
and then the REC button to resume recording. Don’t use the STOP button. While
in Pause mode don’t unplug the machine (if using mains power) - as this will wipe
out the track you have been recording!
Use STOP to stop recording. When you recommence recording a new track will
be created.
Never attempt to open the memory card door (page 13 of manual) while
recording!
Playback
After you stop recording you can press the ENTER button to playback the recording.
You will not hear anything unless you turn the HP/SPK VOL dial (front) back up!
Use the track jump buttons to navigate to the start or the end of the track. If you then
start recording again the PMD starts a new track after the last recorded track - so you
can't record over an existing track by mistake.
Copying sound files into a computer
Ensure that a copy of your interviews is safely transferred from the SD card in the
Marantz to your computer as soon as possible after interviewing. Make sure:
1. That your computer is password protected.
2. That you set up a specific folder, e.g. Interviews[your surname]
3. That you are saving the interview .WAV files on your hard drive and not on the
Cloud.
