APPENDIX 2 : IMO RECOMMENDATIONS
At the time of writing the regulations relating to the maintenance of EPIRBs are:
IMO MSC/Circ 1039 Guidelines for Shore-based Maintenance of satellite EPIRBs.Dated 28 May 2002
IMO MSC/Circ 1040 Guidelines on Annual Testing of 406MHZ satellite EPIRBs. Dated 28 May 2002

NOTE:
Please also note that the introduction by IMO of the EPIRB Shore Based
Maintenance scheme (IMO circ 1039) means that the only companies approved to
carry out the 5 year full battery replacement must be officially certified by the EPIRB
manufacturer. If the company carrying out the battery replacement is not certified by
the manufacturer they will be at risk of taking on the full legal responsibility of the
product’s performance and integrity.
