Donning Aid for Limited Ankle Mobility

Instructions for using the donning aid when ankle movement is restricted or difficult.

Overview

The medi Butler/Valet is a donning aid designed to assist users in putting on compression stockings and tights. It is suitable for all lengths of stockings/tights and can be used with both open and closed-toe garments. The device aims to simplify the process of donning compression garments, particularly for individuals who may have difficulty bending, limited mobility, or conditions such as arthritis or stiff fingers.

Function Description:

The primary function of the medi Butler/Valet is to hold a compression stocking open and in position, allowing the user to easily slide their foot into the garment. It features a semi-circular opening and a stirrup design that cradles the stocking. The device facilitates the initial placement of the foot and then allows the user to pull the stocking up their leg with the aid of handles.

Usage Features:

Standard Donning Method:

  1. Preparation of the Device: Place the medi Butler/Valet on a firm surface with the semi-circular opening facing forwards.
  2. Stocking Placement: Lay the compression stocking in the stirrup with the toe of the stocking facing forwards.
  3. Turning the Stocking: Turn the upper border of the stocking inside out and over the frame. Slide the stocking down over the stirrup until the heel of the stocking appears at the edge of the stirrup.
  4. Foot Insertion (Initial): Place the medi Butler/Valet on the floor. Slip your foot, toe first, into the toe of the stocking.
  5. Foot Insertion (Complete): Step into the medi Butler/Valet, ensuring that both the toe and the heel of your foot are correctly positioned within the stocking.
  6. Pulling Up the Stocking: Use the handles of the device to slide the stocking up towards your knee.
  7. Removal of Device and Adjustment: Once the stocking is just below your knee, tilt the medi Butler/Valet slightly back to remove it from the stocking. Then, adjust the top band of your stocking comfortably into place.

Alternative Donning Method (for fixed ankle or plantar flexing difficulty):

This method is recommended for users who have a fixed ankle or find it difficult to plantar flex (point their toes downwards).

  1. Preparation of the Device: Stand the medi Butler/Valet on a firm surface with the semi-circular opening facing forwards.
  2. Stocking Placement: Lay the compression stocking in the stirrup with the toe of the stocking facing forwards.
  3. Turning the Stocking: Turn the upper border of the stocking inside out and over the frame. Slide the stocking down over the stirrup until the heel appears at the edge of the stirrup. Rubber gloves can be helpful during this step, especially for users with arthritic or stiff fingers, as they can provide better grip.
  4. Foot Insertion: Place the medi Butler/Valet behind you on the floor. Step into the device while holding onto a firm surface for balance. In this position, there is no need to point your toes downwards.
  5. Pulling Up the Stocking: Use the handles to pull the stocking up towards your knee.
  6. Removal of Device and Adjustment: When the stocking is just below your knee, remove the Butler/Valet by tilting it back slightly from the stocking. Adjust the top band of your stocking comfortably into place.

Technical Specifications (implied from images and text):

  • Material: The device appears to be constructed from a durable, rigid material, likely plastic or metal, given its ability to support the stocking and withstand the force of pulling.
  • Design: It features a frame with a semi-circular opening at the top, a stirrup-like base to hold the stocking, and two handles for gripping.
  • Compatibility: Designed for use with all lengths of compression stockings/tights, including both open and closed-toe varieties.

Maintenance Features:

The manual does not explicitly detail maintenance features. However, based on the nature of the device, it is likely that it requires minimal maintenance, primarily involving:

  • Cleaning: Wiping down the device with a damp cloth to keep it clean.
  • Storage: Storing it in a dry place to prevent any potential material degradation.
  • Inspection: Periodically checking for any signs of wear or damage to ensure continued safe and effective operation.

The medi Butler/Valet is a practical tool that enhances the independence of individuals requiring compression therapy by simplifying the often challenging task of donning these garments. Its design caters to various user needs, including those with specific mobility limitations.
