SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
The 618 safety system consists of a transmitter detector (TX) and a receiver detector (RX) mounted on, or
beside, the lift car doors. The detectors generate a light curtain of infra-red beams across the lift
entrance. If a beam is broken then an output is switched to re-open the lift doors.
INSTALLATION
(a) Dynamic Installation
The 618 can be mounted on the car doors using the standard fixing kit provided (Fig 1).
1. Position each detector on the car door. Check the detectors will be:-
• fitted approximately 5mm above the sill
• aligned level and straight with each other
2. Mark or spot through the five fixing holes.
3. Remove the detectors from the door before drilling to avoid swarf entering the detectors.
4. Drill the five fixing holes in the door using a 3.0mm drill.
5. Screw the detectors to the door using the No 6x16 self-tapping screws and shakeproof washers provided.
6. Secure the cables with the P-clips and No 8x12mm self-tapping screws provided. Ensure the cables are
securely held, there are no tight bends and they are not stressed or stretched as the doors move.
7. Important! Screw the earth wire ring tag to the lift door using the No 8 screw and shakeproof washer
provided. The earth wire must be fitted to ensure the unit is properly grounded. Check also that the door
itself is grounded to the lift.

Overview

The Memco Elite Model 618 is a safety system designed for lift applications, providing a light curtain of infra-red beams across the lift entrance to detect obstructions and trigger door re-opening.

Function Description

The 618 safety system comprises a transmitter detector (TX) and a receiver detector (RX) that are mounted on or beside the lift car doors. These detectors generate a light curtain using infra-red beams. If any of these beams are broken by a person or object, an output is switched, causing the lift doors to re-open. This system is crucial for preventing accidents and ensuring passenger safety in lifts.

Important Technical Specifications

The system operates with a power supply that can be either a Memco Model 280/281 power supply or a direct connection to the lift controller/door operator's power source.

  • Power Supply (Model 280): Connects to 230V AC/115V AC (selector switch must be checked).
  • Power Supply (Model 281): Connects to 15-35V DC.
  • Direct Connection Power Source: Must be DC, regulated, and unsmoothed supplies are not to be used. The voltage must be between 11V and 36V DC. The supply must be capable of providing at least 100mA plus any current needed for the 'Door-Reopen' circuit.
  • Output Transistor: The 618 TX detector's output transistor is factory-configured as either NPN or PNP, and Normally-Open (N/O) or Normally-Closed (N/C). The Memco standard is PNP-N/C for a "failsafe" connection.
  • Current Limit (Output Transistor): The current through the transistor must not exceed 250mA (e.g., load resistance >150W).
  • Beam Coverage: The detectors are designed to cover a vertical range, with beam heights indicated at 87mm, 587mm, 1002mm, 1417mm, and 1917mm from the sill. A minimum clearance of 5mm above the sill is required for dynamic installation.
  • Detector Alignment (Static Installation): Detectors should be positioned no more than 4m (14 ft) apart.
  • Cabling: Memco cables are specially shielded and should not be shortened or cut. Only Memco cables should be used between RX/TX detectors and the power supply/terminal block. White and orange wires carry sensitive data. Cables must be kept away from AC mains or high voltages.

Usage Features

The Memco Elite Model 618 offers flexible installation options and diagnostic features:

Installation Types:

  • Dynamic Installation: The detectors are mounted directly on the lift car doors using a standard fixing kit. This involves positioning the detectors approximately 5mm above the sill, ensuring they are level and straight, drilling fixing holes, and securing them with screws. Cables are secured with P-clips, ensuring they are not stressed or stretched during door movement. An earth wire ring tag must be connected to the lift door for proper grounding.
  • Static Installation: The detectors are mounted to the car using a separate static fixing kit (Part No 616 800-010). This involves fixing each detector to a long vertical bracket, then securing the sill bracket to the lift car sill. The top of the vertical brackets are fixed to the lift car using 'L' brackets, ensuring vertical and straight alignment. Cable management is similar to dynamic installation, with P-clips and an earth wire ring tag.

Connection Methods:

  • Using a Model 280/281 Power Supply: This is the recommended method for worry-free installation, providing a regulated DC supply and a "clean-contact" relay for door re-opening. The power supply is positioned where RX and TX cables can reach. The 618 TX and RX cables are connected to the power supply as shown in the wiring diagram. The "door re-open" input of the lift controller or door operator is connected to the relay contacts (COM, N/C, N/O) of the Model 280/281.
  • Direct Connection: The 618 can be directly connected to the lift controller or door operator, where the output transistor inside the TX detector drives the "door-reopen" circuit. This method requires a good understanding of both lift and detector electronics to avoid incompatibility and potential damage. Checks must be performed to ensure the lift's 'Door Reopen' input is compatible with the 618 output transistor, not connected to other lift circuits, and that the power source is suitable (DC, regulated, sufficient power, common referenced, correct voltage).

Timeout Option:

  • The 'Timeout' option is normally enabled by connecting the yellow wire to the +12V terminal (red wire) when using a Model 280/281 power supply or to the supply voltage (red wire) for direct connection. It can be disabled by connecting the yellow wire to the 0V terminal (orange wire) instead.

Audible Tone:

  • When using a Model 280/281 power supply, a tone will be heard when a person or object is detected. This tone can be disabled using SW1.

Maintenance Features

The TX detector includes two LEDs at its top end for troubleshooting and status indication:

LED Status and Possible Causes:

  • No LEDs visible: Indicates no power. Check the 'DC Power' (red) wire and 'OV' (orange) wire.
  • Top LED flashing, Bottom LED off: Indicates a link disconnected. Check the 'Link' (white) wire and 'OV' (orange) wire.
  • Top LED on, Bottom LED off: Indicates an obstruction between detectors.
  • Both LEDs on: Indicates normal (unobstructed) operation.
  • Top LED on, Bottom LED flashing (fast rate): Indicates a diode has timed out.

Important Installation Notes for Maintenance:

  • Cable Integrity: Memco cables should never be shortened by cutting, as different wire colours may be used internally, and the cables are specially shielded.
  • Grounding: The earth wire ring tag must always be fitted to ensure the unit is properly grounded, and the lift door itself should be grounded to the lift.
  • Power Off During Wiring: All power to the lift must be completely turned off while wiring the detectors to prevent electrical hazards and damage.
  • Wire Colour Confusion: Care must be taken not to confuse wire colours, especially in dim lighting conditions within the lift shaft.
  • Cable Routing: Cables must be securely held, without tight bends, and not stressed or stretched as the doors move. They must also be kept away from AC mains or high voltages.
