9. Turn ignition key to the START position and start the engine. If engine is
cold, push in on key to choke engine. If engine fails to start in 10 seconds,
wait 30 seconds and try again. If engine begins to stall, re‑prime (push
key in) until engine is running.
10. Starting Flooded Engine ‑ Advance the fast idle lever or throttle only
feature to the maximum position. Without activating primer, crank engine
for 10 seconds. Wait 30 seconds and repeat until engine starts.
Immediately start to reduce engine speed after engine starts.
11. After engine starts, check for a steady stream of water flowing out of the
water pump indicator hole.
IMPORTANT: If no water is coming out of the water pump indicator hole, stop
engine and check cooling water intake for obstruction. No obstruction may
indicate a water pump failure or blockage in the cooling system. These
conditions will cause the engine to overheat. Have the outboard checked by
your dealer. Operating the engine while overheated will cause engine damage.

Before starting, read the Prestarting Check List, special operating
instructions, and Engine Break‑in Procedure in the Operation section.
NOTICE
Without sufficient cooling water, the engine, the water pump, and other
components will overheat and suffer damage. Provide a sufficient supply of
water to the water inlets during operation.
