Overview

The provided document is an installation guide for the Michelin Connected Fleet M4xx Series, a range of devices designed for vehicle telematics, powered by Masternaut. The guide covers various aspects of installation, including wiring, antenna placement, and optional peripheral connections, as well as important notes, required tools, and certification information.

Function Description

The M4xx Series devices are On-Board Units (OBUs) for vehicle telematics, designed to collect and transmit vehicle data. They support various functionalities, including power supply management, ignition detection, input/output monitoring, and optional connections for CAN bus, HMI (Human-Machine Interface), Tachofresh, Gritters, and Temperature probes. The devices are equipped with internal or external antennas for GSM/LTE and GPS communication, depending on the specific model.

Important Technical Specifications

M4xx Versions:

  • M400/M403 (M40x): Supports external antennas for GSM and LTE.
  • M404/M405 (M40x): Supports external antennas for GSM and LTE.
  • M410 (M41x): Supports internal antennas for GSM and LTE.
  • M414/M415 (M41x): Supports internal antennas for GSM and LTE.

Power Supply:

  • +POWER: Permanent power supply feed (12/24V-DC). Must be fitted after a circuit breaker (if available).
  • +IGNITION: Ignition feed (12/24V-DC). Must be connected to the second stage ignition (ON when the engine is running) and not to the true engine idling feed.
  • GROUND: Must be connected directly to the chassis or a ground terminal; self-tapping screws are not to be used for ground connections.
  • Power I/O Connector:
    • Input 2: WHITE
    • Input 3: ORANGE
    • Input 4: YELLOW
    • Analog 1: GREY
    • Analog 2: PURPLE
    • Output 1: GREEN
    • Output 2: BLUE

Antennas:

  • M41x (Internal Antennas):
    • GSM Antenna: Located internally by the connectors on the side with the label.
    • GPS Antenna: Located internally by the LEDs on the side with the label.
    • Interference: M41x should be placed at least 15 inches (40 cm) from any electrical equipment to minimize interference.
    • Positioning Guidelines: Must NEVER be mounted behind or beneath any metal structures. The side with the label should always face up or towards the inside of the vehicle.
  • M40x (External Antennas):
    • GSM & GSM/LTE Antenna:
      • Interference: Must be placed at least 7.87 inches (20 cm) from the GPS antenna and any electrical equipment. Must also be placed at least 1.2 inches (3 cm) from any metal in the vehicle.
      • Mounting: Can be installed covertly (behind a panel or dash) or overtly (on the windscreen). For overt installation on thermal windscreens, use the non-thermal, dotted area. For classic windscreens, fit behind the rear-view mirror or in a bottom corner. Fixed with reinforced tape.
    • GPS Antenna:
      • Interference: Must be placed at least 7.87 inches (20 cm) from the GSM antenna.
      • Mounting: Fitted under the dash or on the A-pillar with a clear line of sight to the sky. Fixed with double-sided tape and reinforced tape. Has a magnet for metal surfaces.
      • Positioning: The Michelin Connected Fleet logo on the GPS antenna must face the sky, and an arrow on the side indicates the facing direction. No metal should obstruct the line of sight.

Dimensions (Antenna Interference):

  • 20 cm (7.87 inches) between GSM antenna and GPS antenna.
  • 20 cm (7.87 inches) between GSM antenna and all persons/electronic components.
  • 3 cm (1.2 inches) between GSM antenna and any metal in the vehicle.

Safety and Compliance:

  • The OBU must be installed and commissioned by suitably trained and qualified personnel.
  • Never turn the ignition ON if a connector is disconnected.
  • The OBU must never be operated without correct antennas or suitable artificial loads.
  • Equipment should not be operated in hazardous environments (flammable vapours, explosive materials), aircrafts, or near medical equipment.
  • The OBU must not be installed inside the engine compartment.
  • Warranty/tamper seals must be used.

Usage Features

Installation and Wiring:

  • Power Loom (070196): Connects the OBU to the vehicle's power supply and provides input/output connections.
  • Optional Connections:
    • CAN: For connecting to the vehicle's CAN bus.
    • J1587: For connecting to the J1587 bus.
    • CAN TACHO: For tachograph data.
    • 4RS232 Adapter (030627): For connecting RS232 peripherals.
    • HMI Sustainability+ (031118): Human-Machine Interface for driver interaction.
    • K-LINE + D8 Interface (030637): For K-Line and D8 data.
    • D8 Cable (030628): Specific cable for D8 interface.
    • Kline Cable (030628): Specific cable for K-Line interface.
