Overview

The Micro Direct Spiro✓ Lung Monitor is a low-cost, easy-to-use, and accurate spirometry device designed for situations where a report is required. It measures, displays, and stores key spirometry parameters, allowing clinicians to track a patient's lung function over time and compare current efforts to their personal best.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Spiro✓ Lung Monitor is to assess lung function by measuring various forced expiratory volume parameters. It accurately measures and displays the actual FEV1 (Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 second), FEV6 (Forced Expiratory Volume in 6 seconds), FEV1/FEV6 ratio, and FEF25-75 (Forced Expiratory Flow between 25% and 75% of the FVC). Additionally, it calculates and displays the percentage of the patient's Personal Best FEV1, allowing for easy comparison and monitoring of progress. The device stores up to 200 test sessions, providing a comprehensive history of a patient's lung function.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Measured Parameters: FEV1, FEV6, FEV1/FEV6, FEF25-75, % Personal Best FEV1.
  • Memory: Stores up to 200 test sessions.
  • Power Source: Two AAA batteries.
  • Connectivity: USB cable for connection to a PC.
  • Software Compatibility: Spirometry Reports Software for generating PDF reports.
  • Management Zones: Supports both 3-zone and 4-zone management plans with customizable boundaries.
  • Quality Control: Detects poor quality blows (e.g., Vext > 5% or 150mL of FEV6, cough in the 1st second) and indicates with an exclamation mark (!).

Usage Features:

  • Setting Personal Best (Reference) Values: Clinicians can easily set the Personal Best FEV1 value, which serves as a reference point for future patient efforts. This is done by turning on the device, pressing the ▲ and ▼ buttons together for 3 seconds, then using the ▲ or ▼ button to adjust the FEV1 value in 0.10 increments, and finally pressing ENTER to save. Setting the FEV1 reference value to 0.00 de-activates the zones.
  • Setting Management Zones: The device supports both 3-zone and 4-zone management plans, which are factory set but can be customized.
    • 3 Zones: To set 3 zones, turn on the device, press the ▲ and "Enter" buttons together for approximately 10 seconds. Then, set the top (Green/Yellow) boundary using the ▲ or ▼ button and pressing "Enter". Next, set the bottom (Yellow/Red) boundary similarly. The third boundary should be set to 0% (default) as only two boundaries are needed for 3 zones.
    • 4 Zones: First, set the top and bottom boundaries as described for 3 zones. Then, set the middle (Yellow/Orange) boundary by pressing the ▲ button and releasing when the desired value is reached. This value cannot be greater than the top boundary or less than the bottom boundary. Press "Enter" to save.
  • Performing a Test:
    1. Sit down (unless advised otherwise), turn on the device, and insert the mouthpiece.
    2. When ready, breathe in deeply, place the mouthpiece in the mouth, biting lightly, and sealing lips around it.
    3. Blow out as HARD, as FAST, and as LONG as possible for 6 seconds. Avoid blocking the mouthpiece with the tongue or teeth.
    4. After each blow, the FEV1 and FEV1 % Personal Best are displayed.
    5. Pressing the ▲ button cycles through FEV6, FEV1/FEV6, and FEF25-75 results.
    6. Usually, 3 blows are required.
    7. To view the best test in the session (best FEV1 and FEV6), press the "Enter" button. This value is recorded in the device history.
    8. An exclamation mark (!) indicates a poor quality blow, prompting the subject to blow again.
    9. If dizziness or fatigue occurs, wait before continuing or terminate the session.
  • Reviewing Previous Results: The device can store up to 200 test sessions. To view past sessions, turn on the device, press the "Enter" button for approximately 3 seconds. The most recent session (session '1') will be displayed. Pressing the ▲ button will display earlier sessions ('2', '3', etc.). Press "Enter" to return to the test screen.
  • Creating a PDF Report: Test sessions can be transmitted to a PC using the supplied USB cable and the Spirometry Reports Software.
    1. Connect the device to the PC.
    2. Ensure 'Spiro✓ lung monitor' is selected in the Reports Utility.
    3. To print results:
      • When the device is ready for a test, press the ▲ button for 3 seconds to show the Report icon.
      • After a test session, press the ▲ or ▼ button until the print icon is displayed, then press "Enter".
    4. Enter Subject Demographic details and Comments in the Utility Reports and select 'Continue'.
    5. Select a location on the PC to save the PDF report.

Maintenance Features:

  • Deleting All Results History: The device allows for the complete deletion of all stored test session results. To do this, turn on the device, press the ▼ and "Enter" buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds. A long beep will confirm successful deletion. Caution: Once deleted, the history cannot be recovered.
  • Mouthpiece: The device includes a plastic reusable mouthpiece. Regular cleaning or replacement of the mouthpiece is implied for hygiene and accurate readings, although specific cleaning instructions are not detailed in the provided excerpt.
  • Battery Replacement: The device operates on two AAA batteries, indicating user-replaceable batteries for ongoing operation.
