Chapter 3. Routine Maintenance
PELLERIN MILNOR CORPORATION
• Machines that use a spring to hold tension on the motor base—Use the belt tension sleeve
supplied with the machine. Put the sleeve on the rod that the spring is attached to or remove
the sleeve to increase or decrease tension. Replace the spring if necessary.
Supplement 3
How to Examine Chains and Sprockets
With power removed:
• Look for contamination (examples: dirt, dust, dried grease). Remove contamination.
• Look for worn or damaged sprocket teeth. Examples are a hook shape, cracks, or corrosion.
If the sides of a sprocket are worn, this shows that the chain is incorrectly aligned.
• Look for loose chain. If the chain connects sprockets horizontally, the chain is loose if it
hangs more than 0.25 inch for each foot (21 millimeters for each meter) of the span.
• If repairs are not necessary and lubricant was removed, apply new lubricant as specified in
the maintenance summary.
With the machine in operation—Do not touch the machine. Look and listen. When
movement starts or changes direction:
• the chain must not become tight very quickly and make a noise. If it does, the chain is too
loose.
• the sprocket must not knock against the chain rollers. If it does, the rollers and/or sprocket
are worn.
About Component Replacement and Tension Adjustment—Correct adjustment is very
important to the service life of components and operation of the machine. Your Milnor dealer
can do this work. If you know how to do this work (for example, correctly align chain and
sprockets), and you want to do it, speak to your dealer or Milnor for part numbers. Replace
worn components before you make tension adjustments.
