The Milwaukee M18™ FUEL™ 26 MM (1”) SDS PLUS ROTARY HAMMER is a powerful cordless tool designed for various drilling and hammering applications. It is part of the Milwaukee M18 FUEL line, indicating advanced motor technology and battery performance. The tool is designed to reduce the risk of injury, and users are strongly advised to read and understand the operator's manual before use.
The rotary hammer is primarily used for drilling in steel, wood, and concrete, as well as for hammering-only applications. It features a mode selector that allows the user to switch between three settings: rotation only, rotary hammering, and hammering only. This versatility makes it suitable for a wide range of tasks, from precise drilling to heavy-duty concrete demolition.
The tool is equipped with an SDS Plus bit holder, which allows for quick and secure bit changes. For drilling in wood and composition materials, a 13mm chuck adapter kit (Cat. No. M18 CHX) can be installed, expanding the tool's capabilities. A depth gauge rod is included to ensure accurate drilling depths.
The Milwaukee M18™ FUEL™ rotary hammer incorporates an anti-vibration system (MAVS), which significantly reduces vibrations transmitted to the operator. This system enhances user comfort and allows for longer periods of use without excessive fatigue. The tool's design emphasizes user control and safety, with features like a control switch for forward, reverse, and lock positions, and a variable speed trigger for precise operation.
Before operating the tool, users must ensure the battery pack is fully charged using the specified charger. The battery pack is inserted by sliding it onto the tool until it latches securely, and removed by pressing the release buttons and pulling it away. Always remove the battery pack before changing accessories or performing any adjustments to prevent accidental starting.
The side handle can be adjusted to the desired position by loosening the grip, rotating it, and then tightening it securely. This allows for optimal control and comfort, especially during prolonged use. The depth gauge rod is set by pressing the clamping lever, sliding the rod to the desired depth, and then releasing the lever. The drilling depth is measured from the tip of the bit to the tip of the depth gauge rod.
For installing drill bits and chisels with SDS or SDS Plus shanks, the bit holder should be positioned correctly. The bit or chisel is inserted into the nose of the tool, rotated slowly until it aligns, and then pushed in until it locks. A slight back-and-forth movement (about 7 mm) indicates proper locking. To remove, the bit holder release collar is pulled toward the rear of the tool. When using the 13mm chuck, the SDS Plus bit holder is first removed, the chuck adapter is screwed into the chuck, and then the assembly is inserted into the tool.
The mode selector allows users to choose the appropriate action:
The control switch is used to select forward (clockwise) or reverse (counterclockwise) rotation. It also has a center lock position to prevent accidental starting. The variable speed trigger allows for precise control over the tool's speed; the further the trigger is pulled, the greater the speed. When starting the tool, a firm grip on the handle is essential. For optimal performance, moderate pressure should be applied, allowing the tool to do the work. If the bit binds, a built-in slip clutch prevents the bit from turning, and the user should stop the tool, free the bit, and restart.
When drilling, the workpiece should be clamped securely, and backing material used to prevent breakthrough damage. Start drilling at a slow speed, gradually increasing it. Maintain pressure in line with the bit, ensuring it bites effectively without stalling the motor. Reduce pressure as the bit breaks through the last part of the hole to prevent jamming. For wood and composition materials, use appropriate bits and frequently pull the bit out to clear chips.
Regular maintenance is crucial for ensuring the tool's longevity and safe operation. Users should adopt a regular maintenance program, which includes returning the tool, battery pack, and charger to an authorized service center after six months to one year, depending on usage. This service typically includes lubrication, mechanical inspection and cleaning (gears, spindles, bearings, housing), electrical inspection (battery pack, charger, motor), and testing to assure proper mechanical and electrical operation.
Before performing any maintenance, always unplug the charger and remove the battery pack from the tool. Never attempt to disassemble the tool, battery pack, or charger yourself. Any repairs should be performed by a qualified repair person using original manufacturer's replacement parts to ensure the tool's safety.
To prevent personal injury and damage, never immerse the tool, battery pack, or charger in liquid, and avoid allowing liquid to flow inside them. Keep the tool, battery pack, and charger vents clean and free of dust and debris. The tool handles should be kept clean, dry, and free of oil or grease. For cleaning, use only mild soap and a damp cloth. Avoid using harsh cleaning agents and solvents such as gasoline, turpentine, lacquer thinner, paint thinner, chlorinated cleaning solvents, ammonia, and household detergents containing ammonia, as these can harm plastic and insulated parts.
If the tool does not start or operate at full power with a fully charged battery pack, first clean the contacts on the battery pack. If the issue persists, return the tool, charger, and battery pack to an authorized service center for repair.
