Do you have a question about the Mission LX-1 MKII and is the answer not in the manual?
The Mission LX MKII Series loudspeakers are designed to deliver high-fidelity audio, blending Hi-Fi heritage with contemporary design. This series represents the latest in a long line of distinguished Mission loudspeakers, engineered to complement both fine electronics and modern décor. The design philosophy centers on music being the master, with technology serving as its slave, ensuring an uncompromised listening experience.
The Mission LX MKII Series encompasses a range of loudspeakers, including bookshelf, floorstanding, centre, and surround models, designed for various audio setups from stereo to multi-channel home cinema systems. These loudspeakers are built around purpose-designed bass driver cones, precision-engineered motor systems, and advanced tweeters, all manufactured in-house using the latest precision tooling. High-quality binding posts are a standard feature across all models, ensuring robust and reliable connections.
The LX-1 MKII, LX-2 MKII, and LX-3 MKII are 2-way bookshelf speakers, ideal for stereo setups or as part of a compact home cinema system. They are designed to be mounted on rigid stands, ideally spike-coupled to the floor, to optimize their sonic performance. The LX-4 MKII, LX-5 MKII, and LX-6 MKII are 2-way or 3-way floorstanding speakers, offering a more expansive soundstage and deeper bass response, suitable for larger rooms or more demanding audio systems. These models are designed to be placed directly on the floor, utilizing included spikes for stability and acoustic coupling.
For home cinema applications, the LX-C1 MKII and LX-C2 MKII serve as 2-way centre channel speakers, crucial for clear dialogue reproduction. The LX-3D Surround MKII is a 2-way surround speaker, designed to enhance the immersive experience of multi-channel audio, and can also be used for vertical height channels in advanced Dolby Atmos or DTS:X systems.
All LX MKII loudspeakers, with the exception of the closed-box centre channel speakers (LX-C1 MKII and LX-C2 MKII), are reflex enclosures. This design allows for flexible bass tuning through the use of foam bungs, which can be inserted into the bass ports to alter bass parameters and damp resonances, particularly when speakers are placed close to walls or corners.
Before setting up your Mission LX MKII loudspeakers, it is crucial to read and understand all safety instructions to ensure safe operation and longevity of the product. Always switch off all units in your system before making any connections. When powering on, set the volume control to minimum and gradually increase it to avoid sudden loud outputs. It is important not to operate your amplifier at full volume, as this can lead to distorted output and potential damage to your speakers.
For floorstanding models (LX-4 MKII, LX-5 MKII, LX-6 MKII), the included spikes must be fitted. This involves inverting the loudspeaker, screwing a nut onto each spike, and then screwing the spikes into the bushes at the base of the cabinet. The sharp end of the spikes is for carpeted floors, while the domed end is for hard floors. After carefully returning the loudspeaker to its normal position, adjust the spike heights to ensure the speaker is stable and level. Always be cautious as the spikes are very sharp and can damage electrical cables.
Connecting the loudspeakers requires attention to polarity. Loudspeaker cable is typically coded along one edge to indicate polarity. Prepare the cable by splitting it to a depth of about 25mm and stripping 8mm of insulation from each wire. If the cable is stranded, twist the strands to prevent stray strands from contacting opposing terminals. Unscrew the terminal, thread the bare end of the cable through the cross hole, and tighten securely. Connect the red, positive (+) terminal of the loudspeaker to the corresponding red, positive (+) amplifier terminal, and similarly connect the black, negative (-) terminals. This process should be repeated for all channels. For bi-wired models (LX-4 MKII, LX-5 MKII, LX-6 MKII), ensure all connections are made correctly to the LF (low frequency) and HF (high frequency) terminals.
Proper positioning is key to achieving optimal sound quality. For floorstanding and bookshelf loudspeakers, start by placing them about 300mm from the wall and 1.8m apart, with at least 500mm distance from side walls. Experiment with these distances to achieve a perfect stereo stage, characterized by a full sound with clean treble and deep, rich bass. Bookshelf speakers should be positioned so that the top of the speaker is at ear level when seated.
Centre channel speakers (LX-C1 MKII, LX-C2 MKII) should be placed centrally above or below the TV monitor, ensuring the shelf or support can bear the weight and is stable. For older CRT TVs, avoid placing speakers within 450mm of the screen. Surround speakers (LX-3D Surround MKII) are best placed above head height, either to the side or behind the listening seat. For vertical height channels in Dolby Atmos/DTS:X systems, the LX-3D can be placed on top of the front speakers, with the drive units facing upwards.
Tuning the loudspeakers involves checking the phase by ensuring consistent polarity of speaker wires at both the loudspeaker and amplifier terminals. Correctly phased loudspeakers will produce a full sound with clean midrange and powerful bass. Fine-tuning can be done using the provided foam port bungs for reflex enclosures (all models except centre channels). Inserting these bungs into the speaker ports allows adjustment of bass parameters and damping of resonances, particularly useful when speakers are close to walls or corners. The foam filling in centre channel speaker ports should not be removed.
In home theatre setups, digital AV processors often require setting the "size" of the loudspeakers for bass management. Smaller LX MKII models (LX-1 MKII, LX-2 MKII, LX-3 MKII, LX-3D MKII, LX-C1 MKII, LX-C2 MKII) should generally be set to 'Small'. Larger floorstanding models (LX-4 MKII, LX-5 MKII, LX-6 MKII) can be set to 'Large' or 'Small' depending on the performance of your subwoofer.
To maintain the aesthetic and acoustic performance of your Mission LX MKII loudspeakers, regular cleaning is recommended. Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the cabinet. Occasionally, a slightly damped cloth can be used to remove finger marks or stubborn smudges. The grilles should be cleaned carefully in place with a soft brush to avoid damage.
It is important not to subject your loudspeakers to extreme cold, heat, humidity, or direct sunlight, as these conditions can affect their performance and longevity. Avoid placing loudspeakers directly facing other hi-fi units or sharing the same shelf or cabinet, as this can introduce unwanted vibrations or interference. Do not place heavy objects on top of the loudspeakers.
Never attempt to dismantle the loudspeaker, as there are no user-serviceable parts inside. Doing so will void the warranty. All servicing should be referred to qualified service personnel. Servicing is required if the apparatus has been damaged, exposed to rain or moisture, does not operate normally, or has been dropped.
In the event of a fault, pack the loudspeakers correctly using their original packaging to ensure safe transit. The product should be returned to the dealer from whom it was purchased. If you encounter difficulties or there is no Mission dealer in your area, contact the Mission distributor or the service centre for assistance. Retain your sales receipt as proof of purchase for warranty claims. The warranty excludes damage from neglect, accident, misuse, wear and tear, incorrect installation, adjustment, or unauthorized repair.
