Red and near-infrared light is absorbed by chromophores in the
mitochondria (especially Cytochrome c Oxidase), leading to an
increase in mitochondrial membrane potential, oxygen consumption,
adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and a transient increase in reactive
oxygen species (ROS), which then results in increased antioxidant
activity.
It can therefore help to increase energy, accelerate muscle, joint,
and tendon regeneration, increase collagen production, improve
skin quality, improve blood circulation, and have other positive eects.
Dierences in the use of red (RED) and near-infrared (NIR) light
- Red light is absorbed by the skin. It can help improve the skin's
quality and appearance and speed up healing wounds and scars.
- Near-infrared light penetrates deeper into the body. It can help to
improve the regeneration of muscles, joints, and tendons or to
increase cognitive function.
- Red and near-infrared spectra are the most often used together
and have synergistic eects.
