Hub Bearings
Hub bearings require special thin wrenches called “cone wrenches”. If you do not own
these tools, do not aempt hub bearing adjustments. Have a qualied bicycle mechanic
perform the adjustment if you have any doubts. (Fig. 4.4)
1. Check to make sure neither locknut is loose.
2. To adjust, remove wheel from bicycle and loosen the locknut on one side
of the hub while holding the bearing cone on the same side with a cone wrench.
3. Rotate the adjusng cone as needed to eliminate free play.
4. Re-ghten the locknut while holding the adjusng cone in posion.
5. Re-check that the wheel can turn freely without excessive side play.
Cables and Cable Housing
Cables and housing are one of the most overlooked parts on the bicycle. The rst
indicaon that your cables and housing need to be replaced is an increased amount of
pressure needed to operate the brakes or shiers. Before every ride, check that there
are no kinks or frays in the cables and housing. Also check that the housing is seated
properly into each cable stop of the bicycle. It is recommended that the cables and
housing are replaced at least every riding season to prolong the life of your bike. (Fig. 4.5)
Do not ride a bicycle that is not operang properly.
