74-00-00 - GENERAL
The Continental Motors TSIO- 550- G ( ) series en-
gines are equipped with pressurized magnetos with im-
pulse couplings on each magneto.
The magneto/starter switch combines both ignition and
starting functions. T urn key clockwise through R, L and
BOTH to START position; push forward on key while in
START and starter relay is energized. Release of key,
after engine starts, will return switch to BOTH position
where both magnetos are operative.
In OFF position, both magnetos are grounded. At R
position, left magneto is grounded and at L position,
right magneto is grounded.

TROUBLE PROBABLE CAUSE REMEDY
Failure to start or hard starting. Grounded switch wires. Check for grounded wires.
Magneto impulse coupling not op-
erating properly.
Refer to Continental Motors Main-
tenance and Overhaul manual
M- 18.
Spark plugs fouled, improperly
gapped or loose.
Remove and clean spark plugs.
Adjust to proper gap. Install and
tighten to specified torque.
Magnetos improperly timed to en-
gine.
Check magneto timing to engine.
Refer to Continental Motors Main-
tenance and Overhaul manual
M- 18.
Shorted Condenser. Replace Condenser .
Magneto internal timing incorrect
or timed for opposite rotation.
Install correctly timed magneto.
Reference Continental Motors
Maintenance and Overhaul manual
M- 18, for timing procedures.
Engine roughness (Idle). Loose, fouled or improperly
gapped spark plugs.
T ighten Spark Plugs. Clean spark
plugs. Adjust spark plug gap
(.016/.021 both Champion fine wire
and thick electrode). Install new
spark plugs.
Weak Condenser. Replace Condenser.
Engine Roughness (Above Idle
RPM).
Loose or improperly gapped spark
plugs.
T ighten to specified torque. Adjust
to proper gap (.016/.021 both
Champion fine wire and thick elec-
trode).
High tension leak in ignition har-
ness.
Check plug leads for deterioration.
Weak or burned out condenser as
evidenced by burned or pitted
breaker points.
Replace points and condenser.
Sluggish Operation and/or Exces-
sive RPM drop.
Fouled or dead spark plugs. Clean spark plugs. Replace dead
spark plugs.
Improperly gapped spark plugs. Adjust to proper gap.
Magnetos out of time with spark
plugs.

tenance and Overhaul manual
M- 18 for timing procedure.
Damaged magneto breaker points
or condenser.
Replace points and condenser.
